• Hi all
    Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
    Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
    Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

Well then, I guess there isn't much to worry about if I'm just posting things here or in my own art thread. :p

Well I use deviantART, but I have no idea if it's exactly an image uploader site, but I technically put up pictures. There's also imgur, which is free as well as deviantART, but I have no idea if it's better (or worse) than others.

You can upload images onto DeviantArt, and technically it's an image uploader site, but so is Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc. I don't know, you can upload images, I guess, but it wasn't really made specifically for that. (rather to show off artwork and the artistic community)

Does anyone use or know about imgur? There's another one I've heard of that's like *****.com or something like that, but I can't remember.

I use Photobucket. I even have an optional paid account so that all those customers that use my link for their signatures (despite me telling them to get their own hoster) don't blow up my bandwidth allowed on the free account and break everyone's links - including mine.

I went over my bandwith once :L then payed for awhile for unlimited.

Now I just have 2 Photobuckets lol, one for my shop and the other for my banners.

At 91% for my shop one @.@

Yeah, it was an issue with my shop when I had it too. I had to have a paid account or else my bandwidth would burst regardless. As soon as I seen that it went over with over 10 days left until I'd get it back, I upgraded. Thankfully, I have a job, so that $3 a month is paltry.

@Keysmash

Huh... That would make sense.

Well I tried using it sometimes. More specifically when I want to upload something from my phone (Note: Don't use Opera Mini for it. It won't work. I tried it). Then there's Dragoniss who apparently uses it. More than me from my observations.

Anyways, I have a two questions...

Can anyone tell me what's a frag banner? And maybe show an example? A friend of mine asked if I could make one but I have no idea what it is. Other than it's a banner type...

And does anyone know what tool is ideal to use for drawing in digital art programs? (More specifically, Sumopaint) As the pencil tool is the only one that can make lines but they're pixelized...

I've used dA, never tried imgur but it does work, I've seen others use it.

Frag banner: fragmentation banner. Here's one I did...was it last year or the year before? Can't tell, but I did it x amount of time ago.

You can try the ink tool (next to the brush), but it's not very...smooth. There's the brush tool, you can use a circular brush and stuff. For lines there's always the line tool and the curve tool though they're kind of hard to manipulate from my experience.

I'm guessing a frag banner stands for fragmented banner, so like a banner not made of a standard rectangle, and rather more like Brutaka or AnakBae's signature. I've also seen some around that look like shattered glass, which I guess is more faithful to the name, but I think any banner that's a transparent non-square/rectangle background counts.

As for tool, the brush tool is usually universally considered the best, since they can have their properties modified into a pencil-like line, watercolour, patterns, etc. You should be able to change these brush settings on most programs, but I don't have any personal experience with yours, so I can't be sure. The pencil tool is used usually for pixel art and the like.

EDIT: Ninja'd AND proven wrong 0_0;;

Ah... I see... Thank you for the example Miko.

I tried the ink tool, and it keeps making fragmented lines... That's why I asked. Okay, I'll give it a try again. I guess... The line tool, maybe.

@Keysmash

Well, thanks for answering anyway. XD

I haven't been finishing many drawings lately, mostly just sketches. And sometimes I get carried away decorating them, if you know what I mean. Instead of polishing the linework and blending colours, I surround everything in gradients and glowing borders. :D [spoil]
gaN1B4s.png
[/spoil]Seriously, though, I haven't had much motivation to do much lately. Inspiration, maybe, but motivation is at an all-time low. All I want to do is play video games and watch anime and roll around in my own filth all day...

Nice banners! I like all of them, but the destructive trio is my favourite. Overlay keeps me alive :D Unfortunately, I never really understood the appeal of frag banners, so I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

Meanwhile, I've been learning about narratives recently at school. How setting affects the plot and determines the atmosphere, etc. etc. I'm supposed to search up pictures that give me inspiration and splice them together, but hey, since I have a tablet, why not put it to use? :D I was originally only to do a really fast sketch, but then this happened. You can kind of tell.

I'm to focus on 'fantasy worlds' and to 'make it really fantasy-like'. What better way than defying all laws of physics? Even I don't understand what's going on in this picture, other than that the sun is underneath the desert inside the ocean in the sky.

Also, overlay overlay overlay overlay

Also, know how you really start hating what you did after finishing it? Yeah... the Afterloathing Syndrome...

Yeah. Setting can affect the mood greatly. Hence why it's usually rainy or dark when someone's in a bad mood in stories or movies.

Uh... When making fantasy, you don't have to neccessarily defy all the laws of physics. But other than that, it's pretty good. I like the style. For some reason reminds me of Salvador Dali. XD

No, but you can. And its a lot fun! ^_^

Right now, I'm redoing each of the five styles I've drawn my OC at my current skill so that it's easier to see which style I like. This is Melody 01, and this is Melody 01 [2]:

Is this also to decide which pose you liked best overall? I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of them :D I think it'd also be cool to hear your OC's backstory, since we seem to be seeing so much of her these days :p.

As for myself, I haven't been doing much lately, mostly because I've been wrapped up in other things (cough cough getting excited over games I'll never get to play cough) and I haven't had much inspiration either. Basically,

[spoil]

*cue closing drawing program*

Still, I did draw some things, though I really wish I'd get my priorities straight-- work on actually keeping the colour inside the lines (rough sketch, really) rather than dabbling two different shades and moving onto making the background look nice. Though that's really my favourite way to go about these things.

Style, not pose. But yes, thats the idea. And they're done! So I'll ask again,

Which of these 5 seem to have the best style? [Never mind the numbers, I like being consistent with my numbering scheme]
00) Casual

07) Modern
melody_07_by_brutakablaziken-d7f7u26.png

I've been drawing her a lot for this very reason, although some turned out better than others.
And here's her backstory, since you asked. It's not much, but her story is in constant flux.
Melody is the only one of her kind. She was the result of a genetic experiment that wasn't exactly legal in the first place, but her parents managed to keep the authorities at bay. They were pioneers in genetic manipulation, after all. Because of their contributions to science for the past few years, they were quite wealthy.

She grew up extremely sheltered and somewhat babied. She had private, trusted tutors for her academics and extracurriculars. It wasn't until she was in her teens that her parents allowed her to be exposed to the media. Of course, the news channels exploded. This had obviously never been done successfully before, and here she was. She was quite popular - simultaneously famous and infamous. Many people loved the idea and very excited to meet her and welcome her when she went anywhere. Others were scared about what this meant, and of those, some were simply prejudice against. They called her "sub-human".

She had been trained in many forms of self-defense included the use of small firearms. She does keep a pistol on her person at all times when she leaves the house. It makes sense - the world is dangerous for a girl like her. She often dons her "Disguise" outfit in those cases. She draws her hood and hides her tail in a special backpack. At night, you wouldnt be able to tell it was her without getting close.

She just tries to get by unnoticed, day after day.

Melody has a particular affinity for water. She needs a lot more than regular people do to stay hydrated. She can swim extremely well, and while her hearing on land is slightly below normal, her hearing under water is exceptional. She hears differently than us to. She senses the vibrations with the fins on the sides of her head. She still receives the same information, however. She can also hold her breath for a lot longer too. She has gills on the sides of her neck, but they're small and they don't work very well. So while they do give her some oxygen when swimming, she still has to come up for air eventually.

Bru... I think I prefer... Modern, best. I think it's clean and much more detailed. Don't take me wrong, not that the others aren't, but this one certainly is more. At least for me, hehe.

Anyway, could someone give me hints on how to improve this thingy here:
c_mon__christmas__by_sohryu01-d7i1mvg.png

I'm trying to get my inspiration back, but 0 success so far. I decided for a christmas theme, simply because a friend of mine had sent me this render this morning. Couldn't resist. I liked it quite a bit, my first time working with a proper theme. But then so, when you're not inspred, chances are that it won't come out as good.
So... Hints? Ideas?

Can't really say anything to help...

Anyways... I was thinking since not much activity has been happening lately... I'd start a topic!

What are your strength(s) and weakness(es) in your prefered form of art?

I thought that'd be a nice topic as it would allow others to know what you're good at abd might ask for advice while letting us know what you're not good at could allow us to help you if you wish! So, I hope I don't embarass myself as I start!

I believe I'm good at making dramitic poses, or at least I think... Haven't found out what I'm real good at. While I am not good at drawing anything at a frontal angle. I'm also not real good at drawing people, despite being one...

@Brutaka

I, too, like the modern one best. The general feel of the drawing flows more nicely, though I also like the casual one. It's a change and I like it. :p

Whew, backstories really make the character though. I'll keep that in mind now when I see Melody again. Your OC is starting to grow on me, and it's really weird. Not bad weird. Just new kind of feeling weird. :D Though I really do wonder how short your blue and purple pencil crayons must be in comparison to the others...

::

@Akanjão

I think that you should either add more red values to the background or more cold colour onto the image. The red stocking (and overall higher amount of warm colour) and the Pikachu kind of clash with the dark, icy blue. I do like the background, though, it fits the theme perfectly :D The words seem a bit pixelated at the edges too. I like it overall, it's really cute @u@

::

What are your strength(s) and weakness(es) in your prefered form of art?

I try not to dwell on my strengths (or just think about in general) because whenever I do that, I always end up seeing really good art from a much younger artist a few days later and feel bad because they're better than me at everything. :(

Weaknesses, though... let's not get started on that either. The last time I tried I fell into a huge slump.

The thing about that one is that I feel that I just got lucky and got a good drawing where as the others were just normal. I've made almost 10 drawings after the modern one and none of them have been as good (the version of Fantasy up there came close though).

Well, it's no surprise that you like her. After all, she's adorable. *Jax-like sage nod* /shot

I think the thing that sticks out most is that the render doesn't really fit with the blue. Try making a blue overlay just over the render, sort of tint it blue. Also, the render is cut off at the top, might want to move it up a bit.
What are your strength(s) and weakness(es) in your prefered form of art?

I can never answer this question because I really can't figure myself out. I mean, I'm not really good at anything in particular, though at the same time I'm not bad at anything. I could work on text placement and stuff, I guess.

So at school we started messing with this program called Blender cause we're gonna do some stuff with 3D printing (gonna print out a life-sized fossil B]). And because I a) had a huge amount of free time and b) liked the idea of 3D stuff, I drew a thing on Photoshop. With the tutorial in the fan art section. For the first time. Horrid, I know, but hey. It was sort of fun.
