That would've indeed have been more awesome. I didn't mind the concept of Mello and Near, but Near was too much of an L clone.

...I'd have rather had Mello and Matt or something.

I never figured out why 99.8 of Mello fans even acknowledged Matt. Dosen't he only show up in what, ten panels before getting an over-the-top death scene? Apparently that's enough to inspire mass fanfiction/art the world over.

Exactly. When I first skimmed through Death Note, I didn't even notice Matt's existance. I had to re-read it because I had no idea who the hell Matt even was.
