May I please ask why the older cards such as the cards from Basic, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym Leader, Gym Challenge and the Neo's isn't allowed to be used in decks anymore?

I mean... that sucks. It dosen't give us alot of freedom of what cards we can use..... I have a Bushfire Deck which had never been used before plus a Basic set Starterkit.

What's the deal with this?

You could play in unlimited, it's all cards except for birthday Pikachu, the only problem is that you have to find a tournament near you, there aren't that many...

Each year they update the "Modified" format with the newest sets. As mecha-man said you CAN play Unlimited in Leagues and some tourneys, but Modified is the format in all premier events, like Cities, States, etc.

There are a bunch of reasons for this, not the least of which is money. Having the newest sets be the only ones allowed encourages players to buy the newer cards, especially those who haven't played since the Base Set came out. Also, the old cards just wouldn't work in the new formats. Anyone playing current Modified can tell you that having cards like Bill and Double Colorless Energy allowed in decks would make the game broken and boring.

For the record, the current Modified is Hidden Legends and up.

Oh well, I just wasn't aware of the unlimited tourneys.... Well, if I find one.. I'd certainly enter it... if I can find my older cards again.

I understand now. Especially what they are doing for new effects of cards. The old cards just can't take the effects becuse they arn't ment for them.

Not only that, but, over the last few years, the HPs have dramatically increased. When you look back at some of the HPs that were features in the first few sets, you'd realize that very few of these cards would have much playability - especially with the PokemonEXs running around.

While I agree that the tournament formats make the old sets obsolete, it also makes them that much more collectible. Who knows - you may be able to roll your collecting in to "Antiques Roadshow" when you're 60 years old.

At least, I plan to ^_^

*hugs my cards* No, never! My cards are too rare and priceless to give away or sell! They were also one of my childhood faves, so I'll never give them up!

Antiques roadshow just determines the price of your stuff, they won't sell it.
If your having trouble finding a place where you can play unlimited join a league near you(if any) and ask the gym leader to organize one.

That's because ever since the EX series came out, did you ever notice that the design on the cards were different? Every card has some kind of data type in it and if you scan the old set and the new set, then you can see that they are both different. The same way that you can't trade Pokémon from Gold, Silver, or Crystal over to the third generation. I know how you feel and I have to say that I hate it too.
