The Problem With Constantly Making The Girls Of Each Generation Coordinators!

The problem with constantly making the girls of each generation coordinators is which one of them will eventually be a "Pokemon Coordinator Master". We all know that inevitably by the end of the series all of the main characters will have achieved their goals. Ash will be a Pokemon Master, Misty will be a Pokemon Water Master, Brock will be the Best Breeder on Earth, etc., but with May and Dawn though since they're both main characters with the same goal they can't exactly both be "the greatest Pokemon Coordinator Master" which I assume is a title that would only go to one Coordinator and can't be shared. If they keep adding on more girls in the future generations with the same goal, then I don't know how the writers are going to get around this problem.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
The DP games didn't have any new sidequest to replace Contests, so they made Dawn a coordinator because the writers felt Contests were popular enough to do for another generation.

By the 5th gen I expect a new sidequest from the games to exist, so I'm pretty sure Dawn will be the last main girl coordinator in the anime.

Yes, it was a bit disappointing to see a redux of the same goal with a new character, but its not like the writers had much of a choice. There was nothing new for Dawn to do.

The Pokethlon is too similar to Tough Contests in Hoenn and Sinnoh to be used for a new girl character, plus it's not much of a side quest unless you strive for every item, so I don't think they would use it for a new girl.

I hope I don't see another coordinator. I'd love to see a girl breeder though! Compete with Brock, he he. Probably won't happen though. : /

The title of Top Coordinator is similar to the title of Champion in the sense that the Top Coordinator is given a Ribbon Cup in comparison to the Trainer's Champion Trophy. It's plausible to think that there's a Top Coordinator in each Region. If they had to go down that route May would be Top Coordinator of Hoenn and Dawn would be Top Coordinator of Sinnoh like her mother was.

To look at another angle it's also plausible to think that May would reach her goal before Dawn's since she had a headstart and has more experience. If Top Coordinator was a title that only one Coordinator could hold a year (until next year's Grand Festival) then May would be Top Coordinator for a year and resign and Dawn would be Top Coordinator for one of the following years.

In other words ... I don't think there will be a problem one way or another. The writers were vague enough on what happens once a character reaches the next level that they can think of a decent solution / conclusion.

Wow... I love how having two of them is "constant", when Kotone is a badge-collecting trainer, and Marina apparently does both.

I'm only counting the girls who travel with Ash, not main character girls from games who travel alone. I also made my OP with the thought in mind that 99% of the forum was right, and the writers are indeed going to stick to the formula of making every girl who travels with Ash from now on a Coordinator (hence the thread title). There was no need to be rude about it.

Its still only twice.

The only really bad thing about Dawn being a coordinator is it feels like we've seen it all before. The concept of Contests themselves are starting to get stale, even though the writers have experimented with different things like having her lose the appeal round.

If Zoey/Kenny alone were replaced with better characters, Dawn's Contest arc would have been liked much more.

Personally i don't think it would have made a difference. Like you said it's already been done so contests don't feel new or appealing anymore.

I'm not sure about that, better character interaction makes eps more enjoyable.

If say Conway and Ursula were Dawn's main two rivals instead of Zoey/Kenny, I think people would have been much more interested in her interactions with them.

Sadly Conway isn't a coordinator and we don't know if Ursula will ever appear again, but those two characters are proof the writers could have done better.

I dont see why its a big deal. Its just the 2nd straight gen they had a coordinator, not the 20th. Personally, I dont care if they continue having the girl as a coordinator, but I wont be surprised if they switch it up for the 5th gen.

Yeah i think your right but i would have preffered if the writers would have made Zoey a bit more competitive and new then someone who is already experienced and showcase nando more since i prefer him way more then kenny and the people you mentioned are good too but this season i think it's more about Ash and Paul then it is about Dawn and her rivals.

Not really constantly if its only happened twice.

But Dawn does need new interesting rivals. Maybe someone who keeps thinking of her a little kid. Kind of like a big sister that keeps messing with her but truly cares for her. Someone that Dawn wants to prove herself to. Kind of like how Ash and Gary were.

I guess the other would be stronger than the "big sister type" rival, but he sees potential in Dawn. After one battle. She vows to be as great as he is.

If Dawn had rivals like those...I'd kill my own mother to see her in the Grand Festival and any appearances they make.

I think Kenny thought of her as a child because of the nickname she had for her and teased her a bit and nando would be the "stronger big sister" as you put it but the characters imo are not appealing and they barely show up. Zoey is the only one that shows up fairly often but she needs to be more competitive.

Kenny and Nando just aren't good characters. They rarely ever show up and Kenny is more like a dorky kid brother that thinks he out classes you no matter what.

I meant that Dawn should have an older female as her rivals. Someone that takes care of her but someone that she recognizes as a strong Coordinator. Someone that dotes upon her. Someone that embarasses her because she thinks she looks cute when she blushes....someone like that

And Nando doesn't fit the bill either. He hardly ever shows up. As for her other rival, how about someone way stronger than Dawn but she shows potential whenever she battles him. Someone that brings out the best in her.

Rivals like those are what she needs. Not the losers she has now

Nando's passable as a Rival for what he'll likely be used for (a League Rival).

Super Contests had their chance at being distinctively different from the Hoenn Era Contests and they blew it. I think the reason people feel like they've been there and done that with Dawn's Contest Arch is because it's just too much of the same thing. They didn't bring enough new or exciting to the table to keep us interested.

Like people said above, Contests got really popular after they tried it out with May so they decided to find an excuse to continue them because Ash and Brock sure weren't going to be doing them! hehe.
Contests didn't even exist until Hoenn :p i still find that hilarious how all these new discoveries coincidentally happen when Ash travels to that one region XD

The only major elements that makes Dawn's arc different is when she lost the appeal rounds, simply because it never happened before, and of course Jessie winning ribbons.

Although Jessie is likely to be screwed over in the end anyway, its at least nice to see her win. It was a nice plot twist the first time it happened, and its interesting to see where they go with it.

I also think it would have been better for Dawn to go the non-cute Pokemon role...but I guess its too late for that. With the exception of Mamoswine, it looks like the writers are content with keeping all her Pokemon small and unevolved. Even bumping off Ambipom to do so.

Having most of the female characters compete in contests did get a little annoying. It makes me miss Misty & cheer for Kotone. C;

Well if having a girl in contest is the big of issue lets all make a petition to get brock or ash to do contests in Johto and have Misty return to become Johto champion on her quest to master water pokemon. Besides what defines master in a world of different regions that don't interact without Oak the master Prof. I mean really wouldn't it be more interesting if May and Dawn faced off against each other to inspire some new anime world characters rather than have May with some unknown rival???

You guys remember when all the hype about Dawn back in July 2006, when she was on that poster with Dialga and Palkia and we only knew her as "Hikari"?

And then how, three years ago, excited many people were looking forward to the "super" contests in the anime? And how "cool" it was that the writers were giving coordinating a fresh start?

......... Yeah...

Seriously though... now more people are having a problem with this? =(

Having someone replace Ash as the badge-collector is a huge risk. And yet having someone replace the coordinator makes things super fresh and new?

(Actually, considering I've been mentioning this stuff for three years, that's kinda sad. But oh well...)

Wonder what kids in Japan think of all this, though...

I doubt they'd get rid of contests in the anime just because of a new sidequest, although if contests disappeared in the fifth gen games then I'd start to reconsider...

Yes, it was a bit disappointing to see a redux of the same goal with a new character, but its not like the writers had much of a choice. There was nothing new for Dawn to do.

Something related to the legends of Sinnoh... or something else. Doesn't have to be a "token-collecting" quest.

And considering the show wasn't going to die from lack of popularity due to having the current coordinator of the show at the time continue to do contests in the next region...
