Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future

The Problem with Pokémon Types

Theneedleman

That was an eye-opening statistic. I agree 100% that Pokemon should be more balance as far as types go. The only thing that is under numbered that we don't need are a bunch of new dragons, each is unforgettable and will always be known as a powerhouse.

I don't think there should be any 'weaker' dragon types, the whole point of them is that they are the strongest Pokemon. I would like to see some more fire types. We only got 4 new fire types in D/P, (I think), and one of them wasn't even in the Sinnoh dex. But apart from that, I think the amount of Pokemon for each type is Ok. If you think about it, the reason some types, (like normal and water) have more Pokemon than others, (like Dragon and Ghost), is becuase they are much more common, and generally weaker.

It makes plenty of sense to have a lot of Water types, since most of the life on Earth lives in the water. It also makes sense to have very few Dragon and Ghost types, seeing as they are rare and legendary or supernatural beings.

^Well, originally the Dragon Pokemon were created to be some of the best in the game. They're slowly straying away from that now, with things like Altaria though.

One reason why there were so many Water types was because in RSE, it was about Groudon and Kyogre. That's why, if you look, half of Hoenn was water, and the other half was land. They needed to represent the fight between the legendaries. And, if half the map is made of water, it'd be silly if 1/17 Pokemon were Water-types. We should consider ourselves lucky they didn't make it 50 sea Pokemon : 50 land Pokemon for RSE (although that would've made those excessive sea routes more interesting.

They could always make pokemon found in the water not be water type. Look at the 3rd gen fossils, they're in water egg groups but are grass/rock and bug/rock.
They could easily have grass and bug types found in water. Dratini is found in the water when fishing. Why not some poison, psychic, or normal types, without water as a 2nd type found in the water?

The only thing annoying about Water-types from the standpoint of a writer is that a lot of them are hard to use because, in realistic mechanics (similar to the anime), most of them are fish-like creatures that have to swim in order to battle. I guess that kind of cuts down on what you can use as a fic writer if most of your battles aren't on or around water.

And as much as I'd like to see a couple more non-legendary Dragon-types, the Dragon-type itself is an uber. For as many different leaders/elite 4 members that have employed Dragons over the generations, I wish there'd been a few more Ice-types to offset them. Just thank God no one's thought up the idea for a Dragon/Fire combination as the only thing to be able to defeat it reliably would be (as fire's weakness to water is offset by the dragon properties) another Dragon.

I'd like to see them mix up the types a little bit more, though. I've always wanted to see some more of the true elements (so to speak) combined with the Psychic and Dark types. Dark-types have done a pretty good job of it with Cacturne, Sneasel, Houndoom, Sharpedo...but I'd love to see a good Fire/Psychic or Electric/Psychic combo.

Same thing with Flying-types. So far, the only ones that are part-Fire are Charizard, Ho-oh, and Moltres - all generation 2 or earlier. Maybe I'm the only one that kind of thought that Torchic should have had a split evolutionary line. It's not like Fire/Flying would make such an uberish combination. In fact, it'd be weak to Electric, Water (a very common type), Rock. It'd be immune to ground and the Ice weakness would be offset. It'd pose a problem for Grass-types (there's too many of them and not enough of them learn the really good moves) and Bug-types, because most of the same things that are weak against flying (except for Fighting and Ground) are also weak against fire.

....and I still don't understand why the f*** Riolu and Lucario are half-Steel types. Can someone please explain that to me? It should have been Fighting/Psychic or Fighting/Dark. Do we even have a Fighting/Dark yet?

And one Pokemon that got on my nerves...freaking Sableye. I mean...Ghost/Dark? WTF? Why Dewford Mines? Most of even your good Pokemon only know Normal-type attacks at that point. Fighting can't hit it, Psychic can't hit it, Normal can't hit it. Aargh...

And Scyther...for being such a badass in the anime, its type combination utterly screws it over. Weak against Fire, Electric, Ice, Poison, Flying, and 4x Damage for Rock. Gawd. >_<

And, say it with me...for as much as Lance and his buddies seem to LOVE it and for all the crap we have to go through in evolving it. Just make Gyarados freaking Water/Dragon already. Water/Flying? WTF? You spend hours training a Pokemon that DOESN'T KNOW ANY INITIAL ATTACKS BESIDES FREAKING SPLASH for something that a Level 5 Pikachu can knock out in one hit with a Thundershock? And if they're not Dragons, why the hell do most Dragon Tamers have one?? >_<

This is a Total of 712 Types shared between each Pokémon.
Now, the problem is with this is some types are being very neglected. Does anyone know why there are so may Normal and Water types compared to Fire and Rock types?

See that's funny, when the world is mostly water, you get lots of water creatures.

The Pokemon they create fit the landscapes. Fire types are just harder to add to a landscape. We can't have volcanoes pooping out of every corner.

Has Not Changed.
Wh does no one care about fighting types? The majority of them came in 1st gen anyway. Ghost types should be boosted. (Name 1 ghost type legend). There should be more Dragons too. (Again, name a Dragon legend besides Lati@s (Not one in most people's eyes anyway) or Rayquaza). Dark/Ice types are very neglected too. We need more.

Personally I think that Gamefreak should make more dragon/ghost types since they're a lot of people's favorite type.

I see you have been in hypersleep for the last four years before DP.

And they'll hate it. Gamefreak's done it with Blaziken and Infernape, and now look at half the forums.

That's because using Fire/Fight types twice as starters lacks imagination. There needs to be more of a mixture of Fire types, and having more Fire/Fight types doesn't help.
Why couldn't it of been Fire/Steel, Water/Fight and keep Grass/Ground? Atleast then you can use a Fire/Steel type without having to complete the dex.

Skippity skip skip!
Yeah.I picked a Chimchar because I thought It will have a cool new type combination but it was the same type as Blaziken. It was quite disapointing.Anyway, there should be more type combinations.Maybe a Fire and Psychic type for the next game after platinum. And I forgot. There are 18 ghost types.I forgot to count Shedinja.

I think there needs to be more steel types,there should be a ice/dragon pokemon,and there should be less UU normal types like dunsparce.;206;

Dunsparce should have an evolution.

Hello
Why do people complain about the same things over and over again?
Does any one realise how many thread have been made about this?

In any case most of your ideas are pretty dumb or don't make sence. Like steel/ghost how can steel be dead?
And water/fire, I know it sounds good but what kind of creature could have both water and fire? The water would exstingush the fire and then you'd be left with ashes and what kind of pokemon would that be?

i say analyz the lands in which pokemon games take place then look at the pokemon who live in those lands. if they mad a game where there was no need to surf, like in a land locked country that had a volcano in the middle of it, you can be sure that that game would have many new fire, rock, ground, and steel type pokemon becuase that is the terrain that would be best suited to those pokemon. now if said land had several places that paid respect to the dearly departed then it stands to reason that more ghost pokemon and maybe more species of that type would inhabit that land.

so the types of pokemon we see in the games we should think are best suited to live in those lands.

dragons and ghosts are mystical creatures, thusly they should be rarer than other types. i mean how special would a dragon be if we saw them everyday? i mean we dont pay much attention to pigeons do we?

I think for where the games are set the type distribution is okay, but i would have liked to see more new fire types at areas like start mountain
