the REAL reason why they've decided to add pokemon actually making contact...

I know you guys are all psyched about seeing pokemon actually striking one another in battle, but ever thought about why they decided to add it now?

well, the real reason they added this was probably for players to differinciate between attacks that make contact with the opponent to attacks that don't.

This is because there are plenty of abilites that are activated when a pokemon makes contact with them (such as Static). But I've noticed that some people tend to confuse "contact" moves with physical moves (attacks that take advantage of the attack stat)

so while making contact is very cool, it's more then just eye candy, it actually affects gameplay.

Hmmm... interesting way to look at it. True, now it will be easier for players to determine which attacks are actually physical ones.

Another reason would be that Whiners wouldn't shut up about how they thought the pokemon not hitting each other was crappy.

But you idea is a good one, and I definatly agree.

Who wouldn't like the idea lol. I also agree that physical moves will now have more of a view to them as almost all physical moves look the same on XD and Collossem. Some moves are still hard to tell. Like how is waterfall a contact move! lol

The way they did waterfall in Colo/XD was horrible, how can a pokemon that never flies [My Suicune] suddenly float up a downward pouring river!?

<(^.^)> It's Kirby!
My guess is that they thought with all the new tech they could
make it seem alot more real other than them just punching thin
air and then they go flying.

Have you wondered, PDL, that they made these physical contact conceptions so people would find it more intense and interesting than the original Stadiums, Colosseum and XD? People thought that the Pokemon, just by acting out their attacks, seemed like it was stupid because older gamers wanted more physical contact. By doing this, Nintendo is trying to get older gamers to appeal to this Pokemon game.

I was playing at this one online video gaming place and you're allowed to bring your Xbox, PS2 or GCN there to play. I had brought XD there and some older kids came by and said, "OH WOW!! That Pokemon game looks tight!" These older kids were around in their late teens or early twenties.

Look at the description of Waterfall. It says that the Pokemon rushes at the opponent at the speed of a waterfall.

I have to go with Naraku_Diablos on this. Why would they add physical contact just to allow people to tell the difference between physical attacks and contact attacks? It would make sense that they were doing that for profit and eye candy.

But the Whiners were right, it was a bit crappy. A Raichu punching thin air and hitting your Suicune is actually acceptable to you?

But i think it's added just for eye-candy and gameplay, if anything.

What 'bout My Star?
Meh, I didn't care, but the contact could also me made to make the game look like it's flowing better

of course that's a factor, it's a useful fuction in battle, and it looks wonderful as well, it's a win-win situation...

unlike the floating water pokemon gripe some people seem to have...

You're a genius, PDL. I think this is the main purpose of this add-on, seeing how it's hard to distinguish in the handhelds or in the previous Stadiums/Colosseum/XD.

That'd also mean they're going to make as few of an effort as possible, though. D:

And agreed with your second past as well. ;)

I never really thought about it that way, but I agree.
I just thought they added it to make it look cool and such. :p

Yes that is a smart theory, but I think pokemon is just getting more intelligent.

Though,I hope nintendo know what they are doing,as once we go forward we can never go back in this type of add on.

well, I already mentioned in another thread how this could actually affect gameplay. See, by making the Pokemon actually hit eachother, it makes the battles go quicker. In other words, the players won't be wasting their time constantly shifting through shots of each Pokemon, especially when it comes to crap like Sandstorm.

RPGs aren't really meant to be for fast gameplay and quickness. If they were, they would be more like the Street Fighter series or the Metal Slug series, or River City Ransom with Beat-em-up style gameplay.

Pokemon games are really supposed to be for methodical gameplay where you must decide on your course of action that is dependant on the situation, who you're battling, and what conditions are currently in play. This also includes abilities and conditions that are involved when your pokemon makes contact with the foe.

But then again, considering that the majority of pokemon's audience are children with children-sized attention spans, making the battle more interesting is a big factor as well.

I think there's a more important reason as to why they did it: because they can.

Contact in a game like this is actually a very tricky mathematical problem. If they were to just reuse the same animations over and over again, you'd get some Pokémon going through each other and others not making contact at all. The Pokémon that takes the hit may respond as if hit in a different location. The way a Pikachu uses Quick Attack on a Deoxys is different from the way it uses it on a Caterpie. The graphics engine needs to calculate real physics to get things to work right, yet it also needs to somehow keep the effects consistent, looking recognizably the same each time. I believe Nintendo just didn't feel they had the processing power needed in order to do this on the GCN.

You should also remember that there were contact/non-contact moves on Colo/XD, yet they didn't seem to think "genuine" contact was necessary.
