Guessing it slipped in due to the fact that in Platinum I thought she should've had a Grotle :p
Tbh I like it when random trainers use starters, it makes your character and your rivals seem less 'special' and more like normal people :p
Oh yeah if they went all out I would be all for it. It's a delphox here and a Chespin there (for example) that I don't really think is worth having.
And I totally get why you would think that, and I only played diamond so I had to double check platinum, thought it was about 50/50 even though I was pretty sure i remebered it still was a Turtwig, cause it does make sense.

Judging by what the region is based on, I think the gym leaders would be - Grass, Fire, Water, Electric, Flying, Rock, Ground and Dark. The Elite four would have - Steel, Fairy, Dragon and Fighting. As for the Champion, I think they would be a multi user and use a Bug, Ghost, Psychic, Poison, Normal and Ice pokemon thus covering the last few types that are unused by gym leaders and Elite Four.

They also had terrible movesets or terrible choices for Pokemon. For example, they gave Wulfric 3 of the absolute worst Ice Types.

That too, I mean they all had like one pokemon from the current generation and then a bunch of older pokemon.

Thinking about it, where could the gym be located on the first island? O_O
I didn't see any gym-looking building in the map they've given us.

Well we haven't seen the northern side of the big island in detail, so a gym could easily be located around there somewhere. I wouldn't mind if the first gym is water just for a change of pace. :]

Yep, that's true. :D
Or they could be putting it on the second island, who knows. :)

Gyms have come in all shapes and sizes in the recent games. I wouldn't be surprised if the first gym is located within the boardwalk city and we just can't see it.

It was only in Gen 5 that every Gyms took different appearances.
Kalos had variations, but mostly the same building.

I would prefer the same with Gen 5. Exteriors/Architecture that suit the Gym Leader's profession/specialty type. And music too, preferably.

I kind of prefer when they all have the same design actually. Definitely agree on the music, though. I also hope they bring back the up tempo last Pokemon theme from Gen 5.

I want to rebattle gym leaders in their gyms, with them having a 6 strong team and a mega evolution at the end. Once a day would be great. It just offers something a bit fresher. I like the battle chateau in X and Y for rematches, but the teams weren't that big.

What I loved about the B2W2 gyms was the music set the tone for each gym. Even if the music didnt really match the type (Roxie' attempt at rock music, Elesa's was just a runway track) they were still good variations to the gym music.

I don't think all of the gyms are going to be a different architectural designs, considering some might be situated where normal buildings are required (Santalune, Shalour, Anistar and Snowbelle all had the same building, but different colored roofs, which has been posted about before). Not all gyms will have flavor-/type-corresponding layouts on the outside, and that's fine.

I've posted this before but hope we get a Poison gym or Water gym that has a detoxification and environmental cleansing concept that goes well with the fact that the Alola region is situated on the ocean and has to keep the waters clean.

Gym Leaders are meant to be bosses - therefore, they should present an actual challenge. Sorry to say that the gym leaders in X&Y were a joke.

To better serve as a challenge, they should have more than 3 Pokemon after the fourth gym. I also hope that there are sizable level differences between gyms to mandate grinding. As frustrated as I was to lose to gym leaders back in the day, there's something more rewarding about going back, training/grinding, then rebattling the leaders and actually winning.

My expectations are somewhat hopes:

Poison Gym Leader: we haven't had a legitimate one since Koga - Janine was the same gym location (so I really don't count it as another), and then the only other gym was Virbank and Roxie was kind of an afterthought Gym Leader.

Dark Gym Leader: no brainer - we've never had one, before. It's about time. Plus, with the concept of Sun and Moon, an eclipse (meeting of the sun and moon) would be a perfect pretense for the standard 7-8th gym interaction where the region Legendary is encountered -> Dark type & eclipse.

Fairy Elite Four or Champion: we just got our first Fairy Gym Leader due to the introduction of the type, I'd rather not have them just throw another Gym out there in the following generation, but would like to remind people it exists (not that they needed it)

Rock Elite Four: every time this type appears, they always get thrown in first, which doesn't do the type much justice

Bug Elite Four or Champion: I know Bug was just in Kalos, but it's there with Rock type in being early game fodder, though Aaron was a nice change, so I'd be a bit more interested in a Bug-using Champion (moreso than Alder)

NO Electric Gym Leader or Elite Four: we've had one in almost every generation - Lt. Surge, Wattson, Volkner, Elesa, Clemont... it's about time that we DON'T have a region with it (Johto sort of counts, but you still face Lt. Surge when your character goes through Kanto)

NO Water Gym Leader or Elite Four: this one is kind of hard, seeing as Hawai'i is an island and it's...surrounded by water, but it's with Electric type on record as appearing quite often - Misty, Wallace, Juan, Crasher Wake, Cress, Marlon, Siebold...

So...my picks (in no particular order)
Gym Leaders: Fire, Grass, Poison, Ground, Flying, Ghost, Dark, Steel
Elite Four: Normal, Bug, Rock, Fairy

I have the same thoughts and I hope we get the Poison gym a little later then usual, so the sixth or seventh gym.

Yep, we certainly need a Dark type gym. Though I actually hope its early, because due to having three Dark type Elite Four members we've faced the Dark type at high levels quite a bit before and I want to see a Dark type specialist early for a change. Gym 2-4 would be best in my opinion.

Fairy Elite Four or Champion: we just got our first Fairy Gym Leader due to the introduction of the type, I'd rather not have them just throw another Gym out there in the following generation, but would like to remind people it exists (not that they needed it)

A Fairy Elite Four would be cool, but I dislike the idea of champions being type specialists in general.

Rock Elite Four: every time this type appears, they always get thrown in first, which doesn't do the type much justice

I agree and I'm hoping for a later Rock type gym leader or Elite Four member.

Bug Elite Four or Champion: I know Bug was just in Kalos, but it's there with Rock type in being early game fodder, though Aaron was a nice change, so I'd be a bit more interested in a Bug-using Champion (moreso than Alder)

Whilst the region does really suit having a Bug type specialist and I can very much see it being a late game specialist this time, I'm personally actually hoping we can skip on Bug types this gen. We've had Bug Type specialists in every game for the last three generations (Aaron, Bugsy, Burgh twice, Viola) and I'd like to see it take a break.

I really hope we don't have an Electric Gym Leader this time around and I don't think Hawaii suits having an Electric Gym Leader, I'd still like to see one in the Elite Four as thats never been done before.

I would like to skip this too, but we have concept art of what appears to be a Water Type Gym so it seems pretty likely it will happen, though its not a given.

So...my picks (in no particular order)
Gym Leaders: Fire, Grass, Poison, Ground, Flying, Ghost, Dark, Steel

This is pretty simillar to what I want, although I'd rather see a Psychic Gym Leader then in there somewhere and I want Grass to be part of the Elite Four.

Elite Four: Normal, Bug, Rock, Fairy

Rock and Fairy I agree with, but I'd rather see Grass and Electric in the place of Normal and Bug.

Comments / thoughts in Bold.

Two thoughts that aren't really connected to my opinions on the above poster.

Number One: I've mentioned a few times in this thread before but I think Flying would be a really fitting type for the 8th Gym Leader of this region and I was just thinking it'd be really cool if their ace pokemon was the final evolution of the trailer bird they've been teasing us with since the first trailer.

Number Two: In Unova we had Dark, Fighting, Ghost and Psychic as the Elite Four. Unova is based on America and is set based on / is a very urban area. Seeing as Alola is based on Hawaii, another american state with a much more natural and untamed feel to it, I'd be pretty cool if it's Elite Four conflicted with Unova's by being Grass, Fire, Water and Electric, the four starter elemental types. Just a thought.

Just another guy
I'd really like to see a gym leader that has a mixture of types. They still have a theme, but not a type theme. For example, they could have a tropical theme with exeggutor and maybe a new dolphin pokemon. Something to stop the gym leaders being so easy to sweep with one type.

I DO hope individual gym theme would return...
I MISSED them from Pokemon BW2.
