It would be great if the island challenge led into an actual league of ever-changing npc's- like the anime. And from there, would lead into the Elite Four/ Champion. It would certainly be a nice change to the constant formula of 8 badges>E4>Champion.
Would really make people strengthen and focus on their teams before the finale too.

I say that there is about 8 trials. 18 seems too much in my opinion.

Two thoughts: 1) it's weird how Hala seems to employ Tapu Koku in your battle against him, and then how another trailer has Tapu Koku in your employ, so it could be that the Island Kahunas employ pokemon without necessarily catching them, 2) perhaps champions will come from across the world to face the League it's rumored you're seeking to shape, and maybe this "League" serves a sort of multiplayer/hq/defense function.

Per #1, it'd be this interaction with "wild" pokemon outside the confines of a gym that would make the "Island Challenge" different from a "League Challenge by another name".

We know that the Island Challenge goes like this:
TRIAL > TOTEM >> after finishing all available trials on the island >> KAHUNA >> repeat on each island >> ??? >> CHAMPION

We don't know if after defeating all four Kahunas we can go ahead and battle the Champion.
Though I think there will be one last grand trial to act as a Victory Road of sorts.

Hm? I don't recall Hala being shown to use Tapu Koko against you in your battle.

He doesn't. We see a cutscene with Tapu Koko under Hala's control, but the location is different from when you battle him and storm clouds are brewing. League is just mistaken.

I think there might have been, back before we even learned that Hala was a Kahuna. Won't be surprised if he uses it either a) in the ceremony at the beginning of the game or b) during your fight with him as Kahuna. If so, what if all of the Kahuna on the islands use said island's guardian? That would be interesting, but would prevent us from catching them I suppose.

I think that scene was on a totally different area, tho.

Just a thought. Anything could change from early videos to finished game. But I think it still would be interesting if the guardians were involved with the other Kahunas in some way. *shrug*

Well they are. The Island Guardians are the ones who pick the Kahunas, and I bet you anything that they will team up with them during the game's climax (hence the raging storm clouds and ominous feel as Hala and Tapu Koko team up). Still, I highly doubt that the Kahunas will fight you using the Guardians (outside of possibly rematches). I mean, can you imagine having to fight a legendary before even reaching the second island?

Maybe I shouldn't have said that. But the other ideas sound cool, too.

How many Kahunas are there? Just the one or one for each island? I heard that there might be 18 trial captains.

That's a good question. Not sure if it's been answered yet. So far we only know of four Trial Captains, and only one Kahuna has been revealed. The Trials are needed to advance to the next island, so, based solely on that limited information, it seems like there may only be four Kahunas. Until we are told otherwise, of course. I personally hope to be surprised, and that those full details won't be revealed before the game comes out.

Every island has one Kahuna, which is selected by the Island Guardian. As for the Trial Captains, all we know is that 3 of the Captains shown so far are on Akala Island. All 4 could be there, but Sophocles is still up in the air at the moment. 18 Trial Captains is a possibility, sure, but the prevailing theory at the moment is that there will be 16 total (4 on each Island).

Do we also have any idea what role the Captains will play beyond assigning us the trials? I wonder if we will have to battle them at some point. And if three of the revealed ones are on one island, then that would mean that we need to do several trials on each island before we can proceed. Originally, the way it was described made it sound to me like there was only one Captain on an island and we had only to go through that one trial + totem + Kahuna to proceed. So...now that I know a bit more, I can really see how this easily could replace the Gym system in S/M. I just hope we get the same amount of battles out of it as if we were in a Gym, even if it's been stated that the trials can be any number of non-combative tasks.

I'm inclined to think that all four shown are on Akala. They all have the "+" symbol with the "^" highlighted. Given that we've seen the + on the Pokedex it's reasonable to assume that it's replacing the pentagon for Gen 7 native Pokemon. We know that there is going to be 4 sections of the Pokedex so each part of the + is an island's dex.

I don't think they would have specialty types if we didn't battle them at some point.

I believe there is one kahuna per island.

It would make sense, as you have to defeat the kahuna in order to go to the next island.

Curious how things will play out. I was uncertain at first whether we will battle the Captains or not since it sounded like Totem Pokemon were the last thing to do, but reading it over again, it could be that the Captains challenge you after you defeat the Totem Pokemon. If anything, they could be optional battles.

But I could see a case of Totem Pokemon using only one ally each, and the Captains use two Pokemon each, while the Kahunas use three each. If we assume there is at least 8 Captains; and as such 8 Totem Pokemon, then the amount of Pokemon used would be 44, which is the same amount of Pokemon used by Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and the Champion in XY.

Totems
I would assume Totem Pokemon's allies will basically just be their pre evolutions, and I imagine they would all be Gen 7 Pokemon. With that in mind, so far we know:
Normal-Gumshoos(Totem), Yungoos(Ally)
Grass-Lurantis(Totem), Fomantis(Ally)
Fire(Only know Type since it should match Captains)-Salandit evolution(Totem), Salandit(Ally)
Water(Only know Type since it should match Captains)-Yet to be revealed Pokemon
Electric(Only know Type since it should match Captains)-Yet to be revealed Pokemon

Captains
For Captains, we know Kiawe has a Marowak; since we know he is a Fire specialist and Marowak has an Alolan form which is Fire, it's safe to assume he has that kind and as such maybe each Captain has a Alolan form Pokemon and a Gen 7 Pokemon. Also, since Alolan Marowak is prefect for Kiawe design, I would hope that each Captain have Pokemon that fit them(Albeit, that hasn't happen much with other types of characters):
Normal Captain-I assume this will be on the first island and likely the first Captain so the Pokemon shouldn't be too strong. Better idea when we see the character, but right now no option for Alolan Pokemon, but maybe has a Stufful or Pikipek/Its first evolution.
Mallow-Most likely the first Captain on the next island we go to, and probably still we be fairly early in the game so still shouldn't be too strong. Bounsweet/Its evolution or Morelull/Its evolution and a new Alolan Grass type(Don't see Exeggutor happening). Being a cook, Bounsweet and Morelull would fit that well.
Kiawe-Hard to place where he'd be, if Alolan Pokemon evolve around the same time as their original form then it should be around level 30 which Guzma is at when we battle him at the start of the third island so he may be the last on the island. Alolan Marowak should be used, and I'd say a yet to be revealed Pokemon.
Lana-Seems likely she's near the waterfalls so she sould be after Mallow but possibly before Kiawe, depending how far apart the levels will be. No Water Alolan Pokemon yet, but Wishiwashi for her Gen 7 Pokemon, she looks like she'd use Fishes.
Sophocles-I imagine him in the observatory on the big island. Maybe Vikavolt and Alolan Raichu, but I kind of have a hard time seeing him with them, more so Alolan Raichu(Mainly because Sophocles looks jerky and Alolan Raichu looks friendly, but he does have a Pikachu key chain(But also an Electrode).

Kahunas
Hala-Hard to say what he'll use. It seemed like he would use Electric because of Tapu Koko choosing him and it seems like the kind of thing GameFreak would do, but Sophocles uses Electric. So I suppose maybe mix. Whatever the case, I'd like to see an old Pokemon, an Alolan Pokemon, and a Gen 7 Pokemon. He'll be the first Kahunas battled, and it'll be early on, so he can't have too strong Pokemon. Not sure what to expect Pokemon wise for him. I could see Alolan Raichu with him, maybe Rockruff/its evolution, and really not sure for an old Pokemon.

Has anything come to light yet about the fact Kiawe, Mallow & Lana all wear the same sort of jewelry?

Sophocles has it too. There's no confirmation, but most likely Captains have them at the very least to show they are Captains. We could possibly obtain it(Or at least the "jewel") upon completing their trial.
