The Semifinals II: Dazzle (1212)

Ash vs Cynthia, the showdown begins! The first thing to notice is that someone actually used Spiritomb but beside that Cynthia actually had it using Dream Eater! This is one of the very few times that Hypnosis + Dream Eater has ever been seen in battle even after so many seasons have gone by. On that same note, this was a great day for Spiritomb who also got multiple KO's on Ash. This was not a good time to be Dragonite however as it was almost completely neutralized very early.

It could be attributed to luck but either way, Ash was losing momentum fast. Cynthia made full use of the 6 vs 6 battle format and switched out her pokemon a lot. (I think this might be a new record on the show for pokemon swaps in the same match) Whatever Cynthia is up to, it seems to be working because it appeared to deny Ash's team a couple of chances for possible knock outs.

Even though it gets fainted by the end of the episode, this was also a pretty great moment for Pikachu too. Gastrodon is a tough opponent for any electric type yet Ash's Pikachu managed to score good hits on it without taking any damage. I bet Cynthia did not see that one coming!

Nice episode for Ash and Cynthia. Ash for getting frustrated with an opponent that is a little familiar with his tactics and Cynthia for using some kind of out of the norm strategy.

This was such a good start to this battle honestly. Cynthia constantly switching out and smartly using abilities and moves to keep Ash on his toes was really cool and properly portrayed her battle style; the commentary from Diantha and Leon about this was great. I thought this ep did a great job at making sure they both were portrayed decently evenly even so; with Ash also showing off his prowess in battle + his trademark strategies (Counter Shield still inspiring awe in everyone since like 2007, iconic).
