The Sonic/Mario Debate...

I wonder... Sega and Nintendo have been rivals until the end of the Dreamcast, right? That also includes "Super Mario" & "Sonic the Hedgehog," correct? So what I'm asking is well... is there a comparision between the two franchises? I know they're 2 platformers that serve their conpanies for years, I just mean the inside of the games. They both have heroes, sidekicks, and villians. What else is there to compare? I kind of want to make a debate afterwards.

(I didn't know where to put this topic)

Sonic is about the Speed
Mario is about the traditional beat the enemy using powers

Lets not start a debate. I like both Sonic & Mario.

well, they've been rivals for a long long time... it's only natural to have a debate...

I admit, I loved Mario games at first, then when Sonic became popular, I became a Sonic fan, then I went back to Mario games. Then went out of both fandoms for a bit when the DKC series and Pokemon came around, I also became interested in Zelda at that point. Mario was somewhere in the back.

It wasn't until Sonic Heroes that got me back into the Sonic fandom... though, now I fear I like it a little less ever since they changed the voice cast for little reason... and Shadow the Hedgehog didn't help matters... The Chaotix still rock though.

I like both. I mean, I've played more Sonic games than Mario games, (OMG!!)but still, I like them both. And didn't that rivalry thing stop a long time ago?

Back in the days of the SNES and Mega Drive, this was an awesome rivallary, that EVERYONE argued about, and I couldn't possibly pick a favourite between the two. However, by todays standards, Sonic has been in nothing but sup-par, sloppy 3D platform games that have only been getting worse as time goes by. So this shouldn't even be a question anymore. Mario still has his reputation intact, although Sunshine wasn't the best game ever, it certainly wasn't that bad.

The only reason Sonic games are even still selling IS because of the old Genesis games, and because people still love Sonic so much.
Without a doubt, Mario has come out the winner.

To easy,Mario is better. Why might you ask, simply because he's been around longer then Sonic and he has alot more games.

is that counting or not counting mario partys? Just because he has a lot more games does not mean he is better than sonic. Is a 5 hour long Crap (not saying mario is) movie better than a half an hour movie with fantastic animation, storyline and music?

I'm just stating my opinion. I just like Mario better. I really didn't like the Mario movie so much.

I'm going to post character pictures from both series afterwards. I got both Sonic and Mario in my mind and it's been in there a while, also I like to make a fan- fiction of how 2 worlds would meet in my way. That's why I made this debate and why I want to compare characters and stuff.

Now, who do you think is the better Pink-Girl?(if you know what I mean by that)

I vote neither. Both are overrated and should step aside for Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles and Luigi.

To me, Sonic beats Mario. Not to say that I don't like Mario. Super Mario Bros. is a true classic, Super Mario 64 is a great example of an N64 game (and the port to the DS was surprisingly successful), and both Paper Mario Games are two of the best RPG's I've ever played. However, Sonic's just appealed to me so much more since I started playing video-games. Some people say Sonic's been getting worse and worse, and I do agree Sonic Heroes weighs the series down A LOT, but SA2B and Shadow the Hedgehog *GASP!* are two of my favorite games of all time.

Maybe it's just because I enjoy high-speed platforming more than...uhh...regular platforming, but a super fast, spiky blue hedgehog has always appealed to me more than a plumber in overalls and a red shirt, even though they're both cool. Not only that, but the Sonic games just seem more serious to me. Mario is more of a comical hero, but Sonic games have a solid plotline, not to mention the finale's are always awsome, especially in Sonic Adventure 2.

On the other hand, the Mario RPG's DO have a serious plot, they just incorporate humor as well, which only makes them better in their case. But in most of the other Mario games, it's very light-hearted and goofy.

Basically, they've both got their strong-points, and both are amazing series which I hope will continue for many years to come. However, Sonic gets my vote because I simply prefer speed above most other styles of gameplay, and because the first time I picked up a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog along with a Sega Genesis at a garage sale, I knew I was getting into something amazing.

What kind of opinion is that? Mario is better because it has more games and it was around longer? Pfft, you could have said you hated Sonic because he was blue and it'll still be a more valid opinion then that.

Anyways, the differeneces is:

Sonic: Revolves around speed and platforming. Stupid fanboys and smart people divided it into 2 communties.
Mario: More based on platforming. Less Internet drama.

They both rock equally, however I have to side with Sonic, because one of my first experinces was with the Sonic games on the Genesis. I was a big fan of Sonic and playing the older games bring back nostalgic. Then came Sonic Heroes and the mess that followed afterwards, and most fans hated these games, except for Sonic Rush. Which gives me hope for the franchise.

I just think Mario is better. I still like Sonic a little bit. I mostly enjoyed Sonics early Genesis games.

Well I think they weren't rivals. A lot of charastics they share were popular (for heavens sake Mickey Mouse had the gloves). So there appearance means nothing. It is todays overuse with copyright in some eyes it may appear to be utterly similiar. However, Mario was about someone using his powers, while sonic was about speed. Mario was human, Sonic wasn't. They both were different. And everyone had a title. Going back to my Mickey Mouse example, Micky is just a short term for Mickey Mouse as in Super Mario-Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog-Sonic. It is just merely customs in generations which results in what appears to somepeople a rivalry.

If we're talking about the quality of the games produced by both franchises, then Mario wins hands down with no arguments. You'll be hard pressed to find a Mario-related game that isn't enjoyable in some way, and that includes some of the more questionable spin-off titles.
I'm a huge fan of the Sonic series, and I have been since I was but a wee nipper, but unfortunatly each new game released tends to be caught up in an awful hit or miss rut, with more misses than hits. I can't honestly say I've enjoyed the majority of Sonic the Hedgehog games that have been released over the years and there are only a handful of games that I'd consider to be worthwhile (though I'm guessing many would disagree with my stance onf 'Tails' Adventure' :p ).

These days I still lean more towards Sonic, but not by much. I love both universes and the characters that exist in them, as they both have their own unique charm~
...Though Wario is so much better than Shadow that its just not funny :p
