The SPPf Weekly Sprite Contest

Zadros

Incorrigible slacker
Welcome, one and all, to the SPPf WEEKLY SPRITE CONTEST!
(Thread and multiple- posting approved by Sweet May)

The WSC, now over two years old, was originally run by Insidious_Dreamer. Expanded from the social group, Serebii Spriters, it has grown into contest that has been known to receive over 30 individual entries in popular weeks. I hereby welcome you, whether you be a veteran or a new face. We all hope you have a great time here in the land of pixels.

If there are any problems with this thread, PM me.
Please, do not post here. At all. It does not require bumping, links will be put in WSC threads.

This thread is now the place to come for:

Resources

Rules
General:

  • This competition is open to everyone, regardless of spriting experience.
  • All SPPf forum rules apply.
  • Contest officials are:
    • Insidious_Dreamer (absent supreme overlord)
    • Zadros (contest threads)
    • Sweet May (Polls)
  • Weeks should be posted every Monday around 7:30pm (Yes, I set an alarm on my phone so I should be on time, find appropriate timezone here: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=5)
  • Initial polls are posted at the conclusion of the respective week, and champion polls are posted four days later. More about polls below.

Entries:

  • Your sprite must be entirely made by you. No plagiarising is allowed.
  • Save animated sprites as .gif and non-animated as .png or .gif. These are the best file types to use because of the quality, file size and transparency capabilities. Please, don’t use .jpeg. We’ll cry.
  • Each person may only submit one valid sprite per week. If your sprite is rejected, feel free to fix it or create a new one. Your first valid entry is what will go into the polls, so be sure you’re happy with it before you post it.
  • Sprites which do not meet the requirements of the week will not be placed in the polls.
  • Unless otherwise specified, you can only enter one sprite. No shiny versions.
  • Minor changes, such as WBGing or fixing the odd stray pixel are permitted, but ask for permission first.
  • Entries cannot have been created before the beginning of the week.
  • Extras like animation and glows are not accepted unless you’re specifically told otherwise.
  • Animated sprites cannot have a file size greater than 56 KB, and all sprites must fit within the given size limit.
  • Non-Pokemon art is allowed if the contest doesn’t prohibit it, but you must provide a link to the original art.
  • If you’re not sure if your entry is within the rules, PM first.

Polls:

  • Anyone is allowed to vote.
  • You cannot vote for yourself, or suggest/ask anyone else to vote for you.
  • Constructive justification of votes is encouraged, as it gives spriters feedback on how to improve, but you don’t have to.
  • Initial polls last for four days after the end of the contest. You have three votes in total to use between those polls, not three in each.
  • The top three entries from the initial polls are placed in the champion poll, which runs for three days. You have one vote each, not that the forum will let you vote for more.
  • If there are five or less entries, there will be no champion polls. Instead, the initial poll will run for the whole week and voters will have one vote each.

Techniques
Animations
A sprite with slight differences added to each frame are animated to give the impression of movement.
(No tutorials yet)
Glows
First seen in Week 8 of the WSC, implemented on the winning sprite by Douger. A thin pixel outline is added to the outside of the sprite, in a much lighter colour than the rest of the sprite.
(No tutorials yet)
Recolours
The colours of a Pokemon are changed to those from other Pokemon sprites or a custom palette. No more shades are added.
(No tutorials yet)
Reshade
Similar to a recolour, but extra shades and colours may be added.
(No tutorials yet)
Retypes
A Pokemon is edited so it appears to belong to a new type. Combinations of copy+paste
from another Pokemon, scratching and recolouring are used.
(No tutorials yet)
Edits
An existing Pokemon sprite has parts altered or scratched on.
(No tutorials yet)
Reposes
An existing Pokemon is scratched into a new pose.
(No tutorials yet)
Fusions
Multiple different Pokemon are fused together, using a combination of copy+paste, scratching and recolouring.
(No tutorials yet)
Scratches
Brand new Pokemon are created and sprited. Only scratching is used.
(No tutorials yet)
Revamps
Sprites from earlier generations are edited and reshaded to resemble sprites from later generations. Scratching is involved to increase the quality of the sprite to the correct standard, and the pose is maintained (otherwise it’s just a scratch sprite).
(No tutorials yet)
Devamps
Pokemon from later generations are scratched or edited to resemble sprites from earlier generations. Fewer colours are used, and at least some scratching is required to reduce the quality of the sprite to the appropriate standard (otherwise it’s just a retype).
(No tutorials yet)
Trainer sprites
Not really a technique, but the above techniques are applied to trainer sprites instead of regular Pokemon sprites.
(No tutorials yet)
Cosplay
A specific kind of trainer sprite technique involving making the trainer appear as if it’s dressed up in a Pokemon costume.
(No tutorials yet)
Chaos
Small, cute little dolls are scratched to resemble Pokemon. Templates required.
(No tutorials yet)
Overworlds
Overworld sprites are created of Pokemon or trainers.
(No tutorials yet)
Mug shots
Mug shots, similar to those seem in later generations of gym leaders when they’re about to battle you, are scratched or edited.
(No tutorials yet)
Maps
A map, basically like the route maps in-game, is scratched or made from a combination of premade tiles.
(No tutorials yet)
Pixel-overs
A picture is converted to a sprite by covering it with pixels. Less shading is present than the original picture due to fewer colours.
(No tutorials yet)
Pixel art
Pictures or banners are drawn and coloured with pixels. Similar to scratching but on a larger scale.
(No tutorials yet)
