Mynto Data Files
The aeroplane touched down a little after eight in the morning. The sun was just making a place for itself in the sky, and white clouds floated above like puffs of cotton. It was a perfect day for a large event, and a large event it was. Mynto's airport was still under construction, so the plane landed on an aircraft carrier that was floating just off the coast of the island. It was there that everyone was disembarking and getting ready for the trails that lay ahead. Looking out over the calm blue/green waters, the tall yet flat peak of the Ginger Mountains was just visible beneath an icy mist. Beyond that, Mount Paprika, the island's own volcano was almost glowing from the heat it produced.
"Can I get everyone's attention please?" A voice boosted by a megaphone turned the many conversations silent and twisted heads all in one direction. "Thanks! Can we have all the winners of the competition on the first boat to the main land please."
The competition winners weren't the only ones on the first power boat speeding towards the mainland. Several other groups were also there including the competition organisers (The Devon-Silph Institute for Science), teams of scientists and business men, and the few reporters that hadn't gone ahead with the other the night before. Cameron looked around, noticing a girl running around everywhere with a video camera, capturing as much as she could on the small device, getting in as many peoples faces as she could. There were several winners, more than anyone expected there to be.
The boat arrived on the coast within minutes, and everyone disembarked onto a hastily constructed dock. The group of winners was led into the first town of Mynto, Oregano town. A quaint village with a renaissance feel to it. A large building looking more like a courthouse on the outside was in fact the lab where the islands Professor Pine waited patiently for people to receive their pokemon. The Professors own house was pointed out, a relatively big estate, bigger than the other houses, but nothing to be compared with the likes of Saffron or Lilycove. The rest of the houses were all nice enough to look at. The whole town had a faint smell of Oregano about it, mostly due to the wild groves of the herb around the town borders and in people's gardens.
"Ok winners, can you all just stand together for a moment while we take some publicity shots?"
Cameron sighed, this was the whole part of the journey he was bothered by. Apparently they would have reporters following them around in the cities too, keeping the rest of the world up to date on their progress, like some stupid reality tv show. He posed for the photos, smiling, doing V-signs like in those stupid cartoons. He felt like throwing up, or at the least punching someone. Finally he managed to sneak off while the others got caught up with getting interviewed. Cameron headed into the lab quickly, avoiding getting caught.
"Hey you can't just come in here like that!" a spectacled scientist said.
"For goodness sake Brian, shut up and let the boy come in." a voice from above said. "Those media hounds have been out there since before the sun rose. You're irritated after being out there for fifteen minutes, how do you think I feel?"
Professor Pine came down the stairs. Cameron didn't know much about the professor, except for one unique thing. Professor Pine was a woman. Not that this was a problem, but in the world of pokemon science, there were few leading female professors. Pine was tall, towering above Cameron. She had a long face, a long nose and piercing green eyes. A pair of narrow rectangular glasses sat on the bridge of her nose, while her auburn hair sat above her head like some post-modern beehive. Her lab coat was trimmed, appearing stylish, while beneath that she wore a smart-casual suit. She smiled, sincerely.
"You would be Cameron am I right? I tried to familiarise myself with all the competition winners, but going by publicity photos and a list of names was difficult."
"That's right."
"So you know that we tried to keep most traditions as the other leagues here, except for one. I suppose this was the draw for most people. Pokemon brought in from all over the world. Not just the usual Fire, Grass and Water starters. I heard libraries were very busy as people were searching for the most exciting pokemon they could fine."
"I did hear. I saw mine on the National Geographic Channel. I only saw it's second stage, so the last one will be a surprise for me."
"I'm certain it will." she said, smirking. She stopped alongside a large spherical machine, with several transparent tubes hanging down like tentacles. There was a large flat screen on the front. Pine pressed her hand against the pad, and something bleeped. "Pine, M-Zero-Zero-One" she said. Something beeped again. "Magonym."
The machine whirred slightly, then a pokeball rolled gently down a tube and stopped at the end. This was a specially coloured poke-ball, with a regular white base, and green camouflage on top signifying the Bug pokemon inside. Cameron released the pokemon inside, and it materialised on the floor below him. The pokemon was a pale flesh coloured maggot, with almost individual segments to it's body, made more vibrant by a slight increase in coloration towards each 'join'. Two beady black eyes and a puckered mouth with a small proboscis were about the only other features the pokemon had. Considering it's size at about a foot and a half tall, it would freak out any bug haters.
The Magonymph buzzed. It didn't have a call like other pokemon of it's kind, instead it made a strange buzzing drone, not unlike a magnemite, but with a slightly more organic quality, since it changed tone quite often. Professor Pine handed Cameron a Pokedex, with matching pattern on the case, along with three regular pokeballs.
"You have a mobile phone right?" Cameron dug around in a pocket and pulled out a small flip phone. "Excellent. Take this number down... it's our contact number, put it in as Cress. That's 'Centre for Research, Exploration, Safety and Success'. It's what we strive for here. If there are any developments you need to now about, we'll fill you in,"
"Thanks.. say is there a back door out of the lab? I'd rather not stand outside for the next two hours getting more photos taken, plus I wouldn't want to scare my pokemon."
"Ha, you're a rebel kid." Pine said "Sure thing, I'll have my Gardevoir teleport you to the edge of town."
A blue and white bodied Gardevoir floated down from above, and nodded to Cameron. He nodded back and the pokemon waved it's arms. Unlike teleporting with other pokemon, where it feels like you are moving, this was different. Gardevoir are supposedly able to warp reality around them, and this was close to the mark. It looked like the environment around him was mixing into a different one, before the latter stayed and the former melted away. Gardevoir moved away before vanishing again.
Cameron glanced back at the small village. He could make out camera flashes and hear raised voices, but with no interest in staying, headed out onto the path towards the next town.
