The Strong Sphere (95)

Uruto might just become a favorite of mine after how basically saved Liko and Roy from making a mistake he to would make. Very story-heavy like I expected from this.

That was actually a pretty good episode. I liked it more than I thought I would.

- I love the premise of Spinel/Exceed basically building up their reputation and popularity through Strong Spheres, a Rakurium-based item that seemingly has no major drawbacks other than Pokemon growing exhausted by the end of the battle. Having the masses on their side basically ensures Spinel/Exceed can keep doing as they like. Even if Liko and Roy attempt to prove that Exceed's production of Strong Spheres is actually harmful, all it takes is for Spinel to push the blame on Rising Volt Tacklers and claim that their actions from a year ago are the reason why Pokemon all over the world are going berserk. Bringing back Bocco, the NPC from the third arc who failed to get her Tera Orb, was a clever bit of writing. A lot of trainers like her might be desperate to win and Spinel offers them an easy way to power up.

- I do have to ask. Did none of the audience members notice that Glalie and Garganacl were being hurt after they were Rakurium'd? Or that Glalie/Garganacl were basically launching attacks at already fainted Pokemon? I guess they either didn't see properly or they were too caught up in the battle to care? Felt a bit odd that apparently not a single person pointed that out except Liko. Then again, these people seemed to be huge fans of Explorers, so maybe they were too blinded by their fan behavior to care, lol.

- I kinda wish the episode did more with Uruto. It's kinda lame how they made it seem like Uruto was going through something, feeling annoyed or angry, only to reveal it was a gag all along and he was simply carsick! Uruto is a gag character, get it yet? On the more positive side, I liked the brief interactions between him, Liko and Roy at the end, so this dynamic might have potential, but I hope he gets a proper backstory soon.

- The battle itself was fine. As we saw at the beginning of the episode, a mere Water Gun was powered up into a Hydro Pump-level attack that one-shot Electivire, and I think Liko/Roy performed decently as a team until Strong Spheres were activated. I think the episode was essentially confirming what we already knew, that the only way to counter a Strong Sphere is with another gimmick, and without using their own, Liko/Roy stood no chance. I also liked the confirmation that Explorers had also been training off-screen because Glalie's Blizzard was now evenly matched with Crocalor's Flamethrower (compared to Glalie being easily overpowered in the Terastal arc).

- So, since we're approaching Blackthorn, was that Dragon's Den that they teased at the end there? Is there a secret related to Rayquaza hiding in there? I'm very curious where the story is heading next.

This was a very very good episode, probably the best one of the Mega Voltage arc so far!

First of all, I love the direction the plot is currently headed:
A shady/evil organization trying to sell illegal substances while pretenting to help less successful trainers become "stronger". They're manipulating the masses trying to get their approval while at the same time ruining their opponents' (the RVTs) reputation. What a vicious plan and what complex and intriguing plot!

I really liked the battle, too. It was intense and the result seemed plausible. What I loved most was that energetic piece of music that was playing during the battle. It really got you hyped up for the match!
Uruto stepping in and saving the day was pretty awesome. I must say that my attitude towards him is slowly but surely changing and going into a positive direction. Yes, his design is ugly, no doubt about that, but I'm starting to like him because he's a good character (with some mysterious background?) and obviously quite a skilled battler.

Now there's one thing I have mixed feelings about:
I know they wanted to add some extra dramatic effect when they didn't tell us what hapened behind the scenes after Glalie had used Selfdestruct and how Liko, Roy and Uruto manged to escape. But really...they should have shown us anyways! We haven't fully learned yet what happened back then in Rakua. We haven't learned anything about Uruot yet. And now we don't know what really happened when Agathe pushed the red button. I'm not saying this is bad per se, but they really have to be careful that in the end we won't end up with too many loose ends that need to be tied up if you know what I mean.

Another quite funny aspect: Uruto's got a crush on Liko, right?
Uruto always acting weird whenever Liko's talking to him, Roy's line "Pokemon is all you've got your eyes on" and Liko grining, I guess it's a pretty save assumption.

Or that Glalie/Garganacl were basically launching attacks at already fainted Pokemon? I guess they either didn't see properly or they were too caught up in the battle to care? I agree we you here!

That's something I've been asking myself ever since. Are these Anime-exclusive locations or is there any official confirmation (no fan spaculation) where they actually are right now.

As I said at the begiing, a great and exciting episode that I really enjoyed!

The next episode was confirmed to take place near Blackthorne in an official summary, so yeah we're officially in Johto now. There's also been a heavy presence of Johto/gen 2 Pokemon in the past four episodes, which is a nice touch.

It was explained in the next scene, Agate told Sango and Onyx to let them go since they need to keep up a facade of respectability here.

No, he's just awkward around girls. Remember how he reacted when he first learned Roy was with a girl, long before he had any idea what she looked like.

Roy's line "Pokemon is all you've got your eyes on"

That's... not what he was saying at all. ポケモンだけは見てるよな here is basically "You're good with Pokémon, but that's about it, huh?" (implied: you're really bad with girls, dude)

Trash episode which was even worse on a second watch. That battle was complete horseshit and a literal one hit ko, just a mess of writing. And for the crowd to just be ok with them attacking defenseless fainted pokemon means they have no concepts of "villains" so if someone popular is a scumbag, all is well I guess lol.

Well we know now that if Nidothing or Iono ever want to do some villainess ****, they got the go ahead.

Honestly I agree. The crowd's reaction to the battle totally defied any kind of logic. Honestly how can people possibly rever someone whom they see attacking defenseless fainted Pokemon?

Have to say this was the worst episode of the Mega Voltage arc so far. Just terrible writing all around.

I’m feeling so sorry for Glalie because he has no way to numb the pain because of the strong spear. Garganacli had to use recover without his trainer, telling him to. So we can repair its legs it’s legs.

I will say the blatant fanboyism of Explorers kind of makes zero sense.
Strong Spheres are basically a fifth gimmick in universe, and just like Mega evolution, Z moves, Dynamax and Tera it is bound to be scrutinised by top tier trainers.

I can buy maybe the audience being all idiots but when top tier trainers use the spheres and recognise how it hurts pokemon, Exceed is bound to get backlash. What is Spinel’s endgame here?

I really hope the plot isnt dumbed down for Spinel to keep winning as of now

There was nothing wrong with the battles themselves. You're overlooking the fact that those were Rakurium-enhanced Pokémon belonging to actual trainers, not just random wild encounters. We literally saw a Water-type move one-shot a Pokémon with 4x resistance, just because of the Rakurium Sphere’s power boost.

The only part that might be considered poorly written was Sango attacking a Pokémon that had already fainted—which I agree didn’t make much sense.

She probably did it out of spite and pettiness though the audience didn't see it that way.

And that was bullshit too lol. Swanna one shotting Electivire of all pokemon was strike one of why this episode was a mess. With an "enhanced" Water Gun of all things, girl bye.

Liko and Roy were able to beat Tera pokemon which is pretty much the strength boost without the horrible side effects yet get one shot, no amount of you trying to hype this stupid gimmick up will ever make these battles make sense.

This has been added to the lists of quite possibly the stupidest battles in anime history up there with Ash vs Elesa and Ash vs Cameron.

My guy, they were already comparable (if not then stronger) to Liko and Roy before even using strong sphere, not about the battle doesn't make sense

No they weren't lol, they LITERALLY couldn't hit Liko or Roy once while Meowscarada and Crocalor were able to damage Glalie and scare them enough to use the orbs.

Yes, but that explanation didn't make sense if you ask me.
That wall had separated the audience from what was actually going on on the stage. So nobody, absolutely nobody would have seen if, for example, the Explorers had captured Liko, Roy and Uruto and locked them away. That way they could have gotten rid of all their "problems" without anybody ever noticing it (not even the remaining RVTs). So, from the Explorers' perspective Agate telling the others to let them go is pretty stupid and will just cause further problems for them when in fact they could have settled it once and for all.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree here. In my eyes it couldn't be more obvious that Uruto's got a crush on Liko:
1) Uruto getting nervous whenever Liko talks to him. Pretty obvious what the reason for that is, isn't it? ;)
2) Roy's line you quoted above. Even if it is translated the way you suggested it still implies in that special context Uruto is good with Pokemon, but not with girls. And that's what you actually wrote, too. So, your translation basically supports my point. Why would it matter that Uruto isn't good with girls if it wasn't for his obvious crush on Liko?
3) After Roy's line there was a close-up of Liko smiling in a pretty embarrassed way. That scene was pretty telling because she must have known exactly what was going on.

I get your point and I would like to agree with you. But I think it's not the writing that was bad, but the people themselves.
Just look at our world: So-called Hollywood "stars" and musicians are reverred by millions of (mindless) people, although they take drugs, commit all kind of crimes and behave as if they were something special and beyond the law. Still, many people seems to admire them. Call it pure idiocy, but unfortunately that's how people are.
