The "What Games Should I Get?" Thread

The "What Games Should I Get?" Thread?

Ok, I am getting sick to death about all these threads that are appearing about "I'm getting a DS, which games should I get?" or "Should I get Mario Kart DS or Nintendogs, I don't like racing games, though." Sure, one every now and again is fine, but when they're coming in at the rate of two a day it starts to get very tiring reading them and replying them. There's only so many times you can reply after all.

However, I don't want to come across mean and nasty at all (I ain't mean and nasty, honest) so I've made this thread. What thread? I hear you cry. This thread, I reply.

It's essentially an FAQ I've compiled which chronicles all the games for every NINTENDO platform you might be encouraged to get from. If all the regulars agree (inparticular RedStarWarrior of course) then from now on if you have a pondering question over what game to get for what then you can come here.

And you might not even need to ask because all the information will be right here in this front post! Yabba dabba doo!!! But, if you're still confused somehow then feel free to ask and someone will suggest for you. This thread will hopefully stop all these tiresome topics about what games/consoles to get when. So without any further ado...

Frequently Asked Questions

Nintendo Gamecube

I'm thinking of getting a Nintendo Gamecube... is this a good idea?

It would have been a good idea about two years ago, yes. The Gamecube offers a wealth of fantastic games even if it hasn't been particularly successful in sales. It's the only place you can get Nintendo games (that's Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc) and Nintendo games are almost always VERY good games. So, yes, if you've got the money or the oppurtunity to it might be worth getting a Gamecube.
However, there's another little element coming into play. That is the Wii --The Official Nintendo Wii Thread. The Wii is Nintendo's next generation and despite having a wealth of games on it's own, it's also backwards compatible with Gamecube games. So if you got a Gamecube now, in a couple of months time a new console is coming out that is newer, better, innovative, and more exciting and can play Gamecube games. The choice is yours.

I've been looking around but it's getting harder and harder to find Gamecube game. Is there a reason for this and will it effect me?

Well, obviously, it'll effect you because Gamecube games are hard to come by. When the Wii comes out the only way to get Gamecube games will be via the internet and for the under-18s, that's very difficult. Mind you, it's difficult at the moment anyway!!!
The reason for the lack of Gamecube games around is because YOU didn't get a Gamecube. Sales of the Nintendo Gamecube have been awful and some shops simply refuse to sell software and hardware related to it now. So, err, that's why!

Right, I'm gonna get myself a Gamecube this weekend... Any games you'd like to recommend?

I'm glad you asked that Jimmy (can I call you Jimmy) because this is a key point of this thread. Rather than make lots of pointless threads about it have a look here and see what games might take your fancy.

Animal Crossing (Simulation)
Baten Kaitos (RPG)
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (Platformer)
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (Innovative Platformer)
Donkey Konga (Music)
Eternal Darkness (Adventure Horror)
F-Zero GX (Racer)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (RPG)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (Strategy RPG)
Killer 7 (Action)
Luigi's Mansion (Adventure)
Mario Kart: Double Dash (Racer)
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (Action)
Metroid Prime (First Person Shooter)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (First Person Shooter)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (RPG)
Pikmin (Strategy)
Pikmin 2 (Strategy)
Pokemon Colloseum (Adventure RPG)
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (Adventure RPG)
Resident Evil (Remake Adventure)
Resident Evil 4 (Horror Adventure)
Resident Evil Zero (Horror Adventure)
Skies of Arcadia Legends (RPG)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Battle (Platformer)
Sonic Mega Collection (Platformer)
Soul Calibur 2 (Fighting)
Star Fox: Assault (Action Shooter)
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (Adventure)
Super Mario Sunshine (Platformer)
Super Monkey Ball (Platformer)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (Fighting)
Tales of Symphonia (RPG)
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure (Adventure)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Action Adventure)
Viewtiful Joe (Fighter)
WarioWare: Mega Party Game$ (Minigame)
Wave Race: Blue Storm (Racer)

And those games are just the start. There are many more games to suit your fancy! It just depends on your taste. And it helps if you do a little research on each game before you get them.

How do I "research" games, then?

Oh... there's a magic little search engine called Google which with just a type of the game into it will come out with all sorts of information. There's also game sites such as IGN as well which are really useful.

Cool... I think you've pretty much explained everything there is about Gamecube for now!

Funky! If you want to learn more then just post in this thread. It's as easy as one... two...

Three...

Yeah, thanks, but I was saying that. But seriously, any queries... post them here and CERTAINLY NOT in individual threads!

Nintendo DS

Hang on! I was gonna get a DS but I've noticed how there's also this DS Lite thing. What's that about?

One of the criticisms of the DS was it's bulky designs and although Nintendo will never out-right admit it they must have agreed. They've launced the DS Lite. It is exactly the same to the DS (it can play the same games: DS Games, GBA Games, same start-up menu, etc) but it has a much sleeker design and a much brighter screen. You'll find it very difficult to get an original DS now because they're filtering out of the market. The DS and the DS Lite are exactly the same price also. For more information check out the The DS Lite FAQ which has everything you might want to know about it.

I've noticed that the DS Lite comes in multiple colours. I want a pink one. How do I get it?

Again, there's a fantastic thread for all your needs here: It's the DS Lite: Colours & Editions thread. Well worth a look-in.

Those threads were worth a look in. Thank you.

My pleasure. :)

But anyway, what games might you want to recommend for me, now that I'm getting a DS?

Well, just like in the Gamecube section, I'm glad you asked. Because this is the reason for this thread and to stop all these other annoying, repetitive threads coming up. Games I'd recommend for the DS are as followed...

Advance Wars Dual Strike (Strategy)
Animal Crossing: Wild World (Simulation)
Big Brain Academy (Productivity)
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (Productivity)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Action Platformer)
Children of Mana (RPG)
Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training 2 (Productivity
Electroplankton (Unique)
Jam With the Band (Music)
Jump Superstars (Fighting) (Japanese Only)
Kirby: Canvas Curse (Innovative Platformer)
Lost in Blue (Adventure)
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Adventure RPG)
Mario Kart DS (Racing)
Meteos (Puzzle)
Metroid Prime: Hunters (First Person Shooter)
Metroid Prime Pinball (Pinball)
New Super Mario Bros. (Platformer)
Nintendogs (Innovative)
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan (Music Rhythm) (Japan Only)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Court Room Simulation)
Pokemon Ranger (Adventure)
Pokemon Trozei (Puzzle)
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (Survival Horror)
Sonic Rush (Platformer)
Super Mario 64 DS (Platformer)
Super Princess Peach (Platformer)
Trauma Center: Under the Knife (Hospital Simulation)
Tetris DS (Puzzle)
Tony Hawk's American Sk8land (Sport)
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble (Fighter)
WarioWare Touched! (Minigame)

What a list?!?!? I hear you cry. And you must remember that the DS is still in it's early days. There will be loads more titles to add. In fact, there are a few in the works right now such as a new Legend of Zelda, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and a Final Fantasy. And if if you don't know what to choose...

Research, right I get it!

Good. Good. :) And if you're still confused then you can post here where I'm sure somebody will be happy to answer.

Yay!!!

Now, I suppose you want me to do a Gameboy Advance version...

Gameboy Advance

The FAQ will be coming soon, folks!!!

Nice. We needed something like this.

BTW, it's Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, not Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Battle. Also, if SA2:B is on the list, you might as well add Sonic Adventure DX, both were almost equally great.

Also I would recommend the Mario Party series for people that like multiplayer on the Gamecube. It can be great fun with 3 friends.

Nice, this should stop some new threads from poping up like. Also, I want to recommend Call of Duty: Big Red One for the game cube, it is good for those avid shooters out there and is historically accurate.

on another note, in my town there is an over flow of GC games, they're everywhere XD, so it will be easy for me to get a game for the wii when i get it if i can't afford a wii game

MugenKeiji

THERE'S NO $50 HERE!
If you don't mind importing, I can recommend Rhythm Tengoku and Mother 3. Rhythm Tengoku's made by the Wario Ware team, although I'm can't quite recommend importing Mother 3 for the reason that Itoi prides himself on his dialogue, so a good grasp on the Japanese language is a little more than recommended.

No idea. You might as well import it. It took us YEARS over at the US to get the damn game. And Europe had it way longer than we did.

Good idea with the thread. I too was getting tired of all of those "Which game should I get" threads. This will hopefully stop all of those threads.

Super Gamer
It's kinda like my recommendations thread from a long time ago for DS Games:

Well I decided to make a topic on the DS games every DS Owner should own or atleast give a try!

Wario Ware Touched! - it doesn't have a storyline - but it's an easy game to just pick up and play. There are over 180 microgames to play. If you like using the touch screen it's used like 95% of the time, the other 5% is using the microphone. Definately worth trying and to get you used to the touch screen. I give this game an 8/10

Meteos - A fun Puzzle game for the Nintendo DS. It has you doing like what you do in most puzzlers - which is lining up blocks. The twist is you have to line them up in a specific order and make the Meteos blast into space - your main mission is to destroy the planet Meteo. Anyway, it comes with lots of extras such as a Sound Test and many other things. I give this game a 9/10

Kirby Canvas Curse - This is a really innovative game featuring our favorite Pink Puffball (No, not Jigglypuff) KIRBY! Kirby gets turned into a ball by a curse from a witch. Your objective is to guide Kirby through levels using the stylus and collect Metals to unlock secrets and many more extra stuff. It will have you collecting special moves for Kirby as in previous games but he won't be sucking in any enemies. This game is worth trying. I give this game a 9/10

Nintendogs - An awesome puppy simulator from Nintendo. It has you caring, training, and playing with a puppy. There are 3 versions with a total of 18 different dogs. You are allowed a total of 3 dogs in your home and 5 in the dog hotel. Anyway, you pamper and train your Nintendog to do tricks & to even compete in competitions such as Frisbee Catching, Agility, and even obedience. This is definately a good game or should I say sim for someone who doesn't like traditional videogames. I would definately recommend choosing the version that best suits your interest. I give this game a 9/10! ^_^

Mario Kart DS - This game is really awesome. I love how you can race your friends, people who are at the same rank as you, and people from all over the world. The game has several playable characters and some secret characters to unlock. There are also an assortment of 30 tracks to race on. There is some limits online with the game but they aren't too bad. I would say this game is really amazing and fun and is worth getting for you Racing game people who wanna race against people across the world! I would recommend this to anyone! I give this game a 9.5/10 ^_^

Sonic Rush - This game is really awesome and has some interesting features. It's basically got the elements of a Sonic game - lots of high paced speed running and the occasional run in on some enemies. To get to the special stages is much easier than the Advance games for GBA - you have to charge up your Tension, grab onto the wheel and keep using your tension until a Warp hole appears above and you get thrown in it. This game has some really detailed level designs and keeps you going almost the entire time. Through loops, grinding, and even stunts keep you going. Another new feature to the Sonic game is Stunts. You get points for doing various stunts when you go off a ramp or fly up into the air that add into your final score after you touch the golden ring at the end. I would definately recommend this to any Sonic Fan and to anyone in general who likes high speed games.
(A downfall to the game is that instead of the Game Character voices from the Sonic Adventure series - they fired them and used the Anime voices >_>;)
Anyway, I give this game an awesome 9.5/10! ^_^

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - What can I say about this game? You team up with Baby Mario & Baby Luigi in an attempt to save Princess Peach from the Shroobs (Purple Mushroom Aliens). The babies stay on the elders backs and will have to venture off to disable obstacles to be able to proceed through the game. One thing I have experienced is the updated Battle System. (If you’ve played Superstar Saga then you should know what I’m talking about.) The battling system is almost the same except your using 4 characters. You have an advantage with 4 characters because you can do double damage in a Brothers Attack by pushing a few buttons. The graphics are better than its predecessor but still use relatively the same types of animations. The voices sound funny and the game has tons of various humorous moments from “leet speak” to the noises Luigi makes when he’s confused or scared. This game is definitely recommended to fans of RPG style games. Partners in Time is a bit on the short side but is definitely worth playing. I give this game a 9/10.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow Coming Soon

Metroid Prime Hunters - Perhaps one of the best DS games ever is the latest game in the Metroid series, Prime Hunters. It features wireless Multiplayer battles & even features WiFi. I'm not very far in the game but I can tell that it is going to be really cool as I progress further. Even though I haven't played much I still think this game is really awesome! The graphics are very nice looking for the DS's capabilities and the sound effects brought me further into the game, like I was actually in it. The control however is difficult either with the Stylus or without, but I prefer to use the Stylus because I'm better at aiming my weapon. Enemies...well, they are actually kinda "scary" unlike the older games - and they are really detailed and creepy. So far I've only encountered Kanden in the game and I fought/destroyed him, however you wanna put that. The WiFi is actually pretty fun - though I've only played maybe 3 times, it was really cool. WiFi Play is what made me wanna get this game in the first place. You may not like first person shooters, but I suggest you try this game - it's really fun and has a very cool design. I recommend it to any gamer! 9.5/10 for awesomeness!

Tetris DS - Not really into puzzles? - neither was I...until I played Meteos. Well, since Meteos got me into the Puzzling genre I decided I would give the latest installment in the Tetris series a try. At first I was confused as I've always been at Tetris. Tetris features 6 different modes of gameplay: Standard, Catch, Mission, Puzzle, Touch, and Push.

I started out with the Standard Mode. What I got was a normal old Tetris game but with a really cool background featuring Mario Bros. It took me a couple of tries but I finally cleared it.

Catch mode was a real challenge at first - as you know, I don't really like to read directions. I finally managed to collect a mass of blocks, avoiding the slow moving Metroid capsules and blew up the center which gave me a ton of points.

Mission mode can be really hard and really easy at times. It features a Legend of Zelda style background and your mission is usually to clear several lines of Tetrimonos in order to complete the mission. I found that it takes alot of critical fast paced thinking or your screen will fill up with Tetris blocks quickly.

Puzzle mode is pretty simple, it's not very challenging(I've already cleared 30 levels of it) - all you do is pick the right Tetris blocks to complete each puzzle by making all of the blocks dissapear.

Tetris Tower, or Touch Mode features a Balloon Fighter theme. Basically, there is a huge tower of Tetris blocks, that you have to make dissapear. At the top is a jailcell featuring Balloons - you have to get it to the ground. This was easy at first, but then after certain levels you can't turn the blocks anymore which made it difficult.

Push Mode was a little difficult for me to interpret. It features a Donkey Kong theme that will have you throwing barrels. Basically all you have to do is Clear 2 or more lines to push the Tetris blocks into the Computers screen. Whoever's screen gets filled up first loses.

Multiplayer - I have yet to play Multiplayer, but I guess it's sorta the same as WiFi mode.

WiFi, well...lets see. I found it pretty difficult since I am an inexperience Tetris newbie. I got my screen filled full of blocks, but I did manage to win atleast one game. The WiFi wasn't as exciting as I expected - but I should've expected that since it is a Puzzle game.

I'm gonna give this game a 9/10 for just being Tetris at its best.

For those who do not own Sonic Rush, head over to Best Buy before Aug. 26th and you can buy the game for only $14.99. That's three dollars LESS than a USED copy over at GameStop/EB Games.

The Metroid Prime are not First Person Shooters, but First Person Adventure with a Gun. It is an adventure game, not a shooter game (except for Hunters, which is a shooter)

Quoted for truth.

Metroid Prime (and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes I believe) are not first-person shooters. They are action adventure games in first-person.

In first-person shooters (standard ones), you shoot down enemies with many weapons, and move on. You snipe them down, machine gun them down, and follow missions. Collecting extra ammo for your guns.

In Metroid Prime, you solve puzzles, scan things, explore a planet to the back of it's teeth, collect power-ups, receive scan data and use it, roll up in a ball and do stuff. The extra weapons you get (which I've none of yet) just have different effects on your enemys; they don't have zoom in effects.

But enough with that - I actually have a question of which game I should get. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance or Starfox Assault. I'm a big fan of Starfox, but I know that it doesn't have a lot of arwing missions but I think I'd enjoy the foot missions like I did last time I played it.

I also love strategy RPGs and loved Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance when I played it, so I'm not sure about that one.

Please help

I recommend Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for GBA. I´m not really good with reviews, but it´s a great game, better than Partners in Time , IMO. Although it lacks in graphics and sound, it´s fun and has great characters and story.

Get Fire Emblem: Path Of Radiance. It has a rich storyline, awsome characters and great gameplay(though lots of people hate the battle animations). Star Fox Assault is great, but it is too short and its best feature is the multipayer.

Guitar dude bill, Ive never played Fire Emblem, but if you're an avid Starfox fan, then Assualt is for you. There are good airwing missions, and the foot missions are very well done with th e fast speed and action. The multiplayer is also pretty good, to an extent. But it ca nbe a lot better with more than two people.
