The World Languages Club, officially approved by PsiUmbreon.

¡Hola! Bawoni! Szervusz! Hallo! Zdravo! Ciao! Preevyet! Konnichi wa! Hej! Bonjour! Yau! Tungjatjeta! Apa Kabar! Hola! Ahoj! Merhaba! Sawubona! Guten Tag! Terve! Salut! Dia dhuit! Labdien! Olá! Hello! Sveikas! Hei! Dzień dobry! Chào! Hujambo!

Welcome all to the one and only, World Languages Club!

I believe the purpose of this club is rather self-explanatory, but anyways, let's go over it!

This club is for anyone who likes languages, and anything related to them, learning languages, discussing them, etc. You may also be able to help here with whatever language class you may have, etc.

Anyone can join, as long as you like languages. You don't have to know another language in order to join (although if you do, much better), but you must be interested in learning languages and having discussions about them.

~*RULES*~

Other than the usual (i.e. no flaming, etc.), there are a few extra rules. Please abide by them:

***Do your best to type in proper English. Also, English is the preferred language of communication***

Things like "Y halo thar" and "w00t!" are fine, but a whole post of l33t/n00bspeak and improper punctuation (i.e. not capitalizing a word at the beginning of each sentence) will make my eyes go ballistic, and I'm sure others will not appreciate it, either. Plus, English is a language, don't forget, and it deserves respect, despite its crazy spellings.

And, it'd be best to stick to English as the language of communication, because it is, after all, the international language of the world, and, this is an English speaking forum. Besides, if, say, I post something in French, how will others know what I posted? Lucky you if you know French, but others might not. However, this is just a general thing. It doesn't mean in any way that you're not allowed to post in another language -this is a language club, after all! For example, say you're talking about Japanese with other members and you post some stuff in Japanese. That's fine. I don't know Japanese, but it's ok. It's preferable if you translate, though, to avoid curious members from asking "What did you say?" or "What were you talking about?" and such.

Note: Beware that many people, including myself, do not have installation programs that allow them to see other writings such as Japanese, Russian and Greek and thus might not be able to see what you type if you write in one of those langs.

***No flaming of other languages***

I'd think this is obvious, but, you never know. It's fine if you dislike a language -I don't have a problem with it. Just don't flame it, i.e. "OMGZ I think italian is teh sux00rz cuz its so ugly ew!!!" That sort of comment is not allowed in this club, and, it makes you look dumb. I (along with the future co-owners) will try to ensure that everyone respects everyone else's tastes. If you want to express your dislike for a language, do so in an intelligent, diplomatic manner. Example: "I personally do not like the Italian language. It's just not appealing to me. Its spelling makes no sense to me, and I find its sounds are rather boring. And the grammar is kinda dull, too. Greek, on the other hand, is like music to my ears." See? A comment like that is more like "constructive bashing", where as the first one is more like just "plain bashing". I personally believe that every single language is beautiful in its own way(s), albeit, like everyone else, I like some languages more than I like others.

***No inappropriate words or phrases in order languages***

Self-explanatory, I believe. It's a World Languages Club, but that doesn't allow you to offend other members in another language. Now, I realize that languages perceive words differently. For example, in Spanish, words like "hell" and "damn" aren't bad words. Nevertheless, if it's offensive in English, don't use it. Just because calling someone "stupid" isn't offensive in Cuban Spanish -it's more like silly/dummy- it doesn't give me the right to call another member stupid. It might not be offensive in Spanish, but it is in English. Let's just all get along, okay? ^_^

And that's all. I believe the rest of the rules, as I said before, are rather obvious. No need to go over the "no SPAM, no flaming", etc. stuff.

~*TO JOIN*~

Well, obviously you must like languages, or have some interest in them. Whether you're already fluent in more than one language or you just know English and are learning other languages, it matters not. If you like languages, go ahead and join! However, there's a small app. that I'd like you to fill in ^^:

1. What is your nationality?* And what are some of your backgrounds?
2. Which language(s) do you speak fluently? Which language(s) are you
currently learning? (if any)
3. Why do you want to join this club?**

(*) If the country you're from/the nationality you have is different from the one you live in/you have now, specify so. I.e. I'm Cuban but I live in Canada.

(**) Try to be more thorough about it, please. Things like "because I love languages" is a rather simplistic reason for wanting to join this club.

Once you do this, you'll be a member, unless one of the co-owners, for a good reason, doesn't allow you to be one.

~*ABOUT CO-OWNERSHIP*~

Me and SilverGirl are the only owners as of now.

I would like one more (perhaps two more, but I don't think so) owners. I'm not sure who it'll be; I just want a capable and active person for the job. Being here once a week and then being gone for three weeks (unless justified) isn't my idea of being active, so yeah. Other than that, you're welcome to ask me, and I'll either accept or decline (I'll most likely accept, but you never know =P).

The people I entrust with co-ownership of the club will have as many rights and duties as myself. If I receive no propositions to become co-owner, I'll assume nobody wants to be one and they're fine with me being the only owner.

~*CURRENT TOPIC(S)*~

-What word from another language has another meaning in your language?

Lol, you don't really think I'd create a club without approval, eh? XD I just forgot, that's all. But yes, PsiUmbreon approved it.

I think Filipino is quite interesting. It has a lot of Spanish roots, and as far as pronounciation goes, it's rather easy. But maybe that's because I speak Spanish...

Anyways, welcome to the club, Ratiosu381. You're our first member. Yay! ^_^

Okay, sorry for the double post. Here's our first topic!

What do you think about conlangs (a.k.a constructed languages/artificial languages) such as Klingon, Esperanto, Elvish and Orcish? Do you think people should actually learn them/speak them and consider them international languages?

Personally, I don't think so. They're fun to learn but shouldn't be taken seriously. There are plenty of natural languages in the world, and lots of cool ones, so what's the point? Sure, languages like Esperanto are very simple, but that's exactly what makes learning a language so fun: it's not simple! ;)

super cuno
I'll join... :D

1. I'm Slovenian as far as I know. :D
2. I can speak English and Slovenian (duh!) fluently and I'm learning French. Oh and BTW I can speak German a bit. :D
3. Because I'd like to learn more languages and their culture.

Well people can learn them if they want them but it should be optional.
They're artificial languages like you said which why they shouldn't be considerd international.

Yes, I agree with you! Of course, learning them is fun, but they're artificial, so where could you practice them? =)

1. What is your nationality? And what are some of your backgrounds?
I'm British in terms of nationality, but I'm born, grow and living in Hong Kong...All right, I'm quarter British too (the rest is Chinese), happy? ^^;;;

2. Which language(s) do you speak fluently? Which language(s) are you
currently learning? (if any)
Speaks fluently: Cantonese, English (I guess), Mandarin, Japanese (everything's good with some practice)
Learning: Spanish (Don't expect me to utter a vocab though, I'm talking about really REALLY beginner's level)

3. Why do you want to join this club?
Being an English major in college, I've been interested in language quite some time already--Since junior high, to be exact. I wanted to be a linguist or perhaps speech therapist. But my results are not really up to par, so being an English teacher might end up the only one for me to pay my bills in the future...((cough))
It's nice to know more about those less dominant European language (Norwegian, Russian, etc), and this club would be a nice place to mingle. ^^

I assume you're talking about "Maths" and "Physics", being a straightly liberal art person, I wouldn't know much about them.
