The Zalto Region

DazedMinezumi

Patrat don't exist
This week, there was a thread dedicated to creating a new villain team. It inspired me to share the region I’ve been working on for a couple years now. It’s still being developed, but I’d love to hear feedback/suggestions regarding the story and premise. I feel like it’s a very meta look at how Pokémon games function and while not too mature, definitely has a darker tone than all previous installments. (Almost 300 new Pokémon also.)

Premise

The League Oversight Board exists to make sure the Pokémon League is running smoothly, but has recently come under new management that wants to shake things up.

The League Oversight Board entered the Zalto Region to re-distribute the Gym Leader/Elite Four typings due to over saturation of certain types in the league for too long. The Water type has been banned from occupying any more gyms and the elite four now excludes Dragon, Fighting, Psychic, and Ghost types. This has led to the previous league members specializing in these types to feel unfairly excluded from the opportunity to represent their types in the League. Hemlock has taken advantage of their exclusion to convince these five trainers to join Team Plague as his admins, under the impression they would overthrow the Pokémon League Board. But Hemlock’s true plan is kept a secret from most.

Hemlock plans to use the legendaries of the region, a Dark/Fairy Reaper Pokemon and a Rock/Ghost type Hex Pokémon to raise the dead and bring about a zombie apocalypse, fueled by his hatred for humanity.

The Pokémon League Academy exists to teach young trainers what it takes to become future gym leaders, and the League Board has picked a few star pupils to take on that role early, as well as some seasoned trainers to maintain the desired level of difficulty.

Gym Leaders

Retaining only one member from just months ago, the entire set of gym leaders are new to their positions, and were all hand picked by the League Appointment Board. Half are composed of trainers from the Pokémon League Academy, a high-profile institution that trains the gym leaders of tomorrow

1. Alaska- A teenage ice type trainer from the League Academy. He is new to the Zalto region, and is very kind, but a little shy. He became a gym leader when the League Board appointed him, and is still weary of his capabilities.

2. Ashley- A fire type trainer and a cheerleader from the League Academy. She is confident in more than just her battling abilities and it came as no surprise to her when she was appointed new gym leader. Her fiery spirit always gets others excited.

3. Shade- A dark type trainer from the League Academy. She stays somewhat distanced from her peers, entirely her choice, and prefers the company of Pokémon over people. She had a close friendship with Calypso but has lost touch with him since the ban. Her makeup mirrors her outfits, all black.

4. Hawkins- A flying type trainer and the last of the four League Academy students to be appointed Gym Leader. He is a tennis star and very popular among his peers, but stays quite humble. No one has ever seen him lose his temper. Ashley seems to have an interest in him.

5. Locasta- A woman who agreed to work as gym leader because of the financial compensation. She was dismayed to learn she would be training bug types, and isn’t too upset watching trainers beat her bug Pokémon in battle. She does what she needs to in order to pay her bills.

6. Silvia- Sent from the Unova region as a representative of Clay’s Construction. She is overseeing the renovations to the Pokémon League ordered by the League Board, and also serves as the steel type gym leader. Her team is very offensive, and she wants to finish her battles quickly; she’s a very busy woman.

7. Graff- A wheelchair bound older man who trains rock types. He lost ability of his legs in a rock climbing incident many years ago, and has served as a gym leader since. He was close to retiring but extended his contract at the request of the League Board.

8. Hemlock- A poison type trainer and leader of Team Plague. Everything fell into place and he was able to take over as gym leader during the changes brought on by the League Board. He’s dreamt his entire life for a zombie apocalypse to end humanity, but never thought he’d have the chance to play a part. He’s a very lucky man.

Elite Four

The Elite Four is entirely composed of the members of the League Oversight Board. Their chairman, David, serves as champion, and each specializes in a type they felt was underrepresented in all pre-established Pokémon Leagues.

1. Cece- An outspoken woman with very, very long hair. She trains normal type Pokémon and being very old-fashioned, makes it known to all that she isn’t a fan of technology or automation. She follows very strict patterns in her battle style.

2. Michael- An off-putting, balding man, quick to call others on their mistakes. He trains fairy types, but is adamant about his ‘masculinity’ and blows up if you suggest otherwise.

3. Kitty- A slightly overweight woman who might actually be good at her job if she didn’t spend so much time gossiping. She trains grass types, and often kisses up to David. She may be the third strongest member of the elite four, but she can’t even believe David would appoint Denise of all people as member #4!

4. Denise- Newer to the Board, but very driven and always willing to learn. She quickly became David’s right-hand woman and specializes in the electric type. She speaks her mind and doesn’t like when other people won’t get to the point, but she’s reliable, trustworthy, and empathetic in giving advice.

Champion: David- Chairman of the League Oversight Board and a user of ground type Pokémon. He wants under-utilized types to get their moment to shine and has completely revamped the structure of the Zalto League to ensure that happens. He’s worked hard his entire life, starting as a miner in Sinnoh, moving into construction in Unova, and now appointed Board Chairman in Zalto. He doesn’t leave many friends in his wake, but success is all he’s after and hey, he got it.

Team Plague

Led by the poison-type trainer Hemlock, also the final gym leader of the Zalto Region.

Team Plague is characterized by their purple and black uniforms with a toxic logo, however the 5 admins wear the clothes they normally wore as former gym leader/elite four members. Like Team Rocket, Team Plague also uses mostly poison or dark Pokémon, but each admin specializes in their own type. These are the five admins:

Ouija- Retired Long ago from a Pokémon League in another region. Joins Team Plague to honor the memory of his deceased wife, Agatha, a ghost type trainer from the Kanto region, who he believes would have fought the ban.

Calypso- A psychic type trainer from the League Academy. He is the only one from his friend group to specialize in a type affected by the ban, resulting in his isolation from them. Feeling abandoned, and losing a connection with a friend with whom he was emotionally invested, he joins Team Plague.

Fida- A fit, middle-aged woman with a specialty in fighting types. Her malice towards the League Board drives her to join Team Plague to seek revenge. She becomes Hemlock’s most trusted admin, and fully aware of his plan.

Kassal- A jester with an admiration of dragons. He is a former member of the Zalto elite four and feels that banning the dragon type in an insult to the Pokémon whose beauty and majesty deserve to be honored.

Dewdrop- A young water type trainer always looking for a cause to support. While she prefers peaceful protest, she will fight for what she believes in right.

Thanks for reading and I’d love to answer any questions. There are quite a lot of story elements I couldn’t condense to just this post and I’d also love to share
