Their Father's Children

I've had this written for a long time. It was one of the products of my GL/E4 phase, which I'm apparently still in judging by the Steven Stone ideas floating around my head.

Anyway, enjoy. Contains euphemisms.

No, it honestly does. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Their Father's Children

A Monday afternoon in Celadon City was spent mainly at work. For those lucky enough to have Monday off or were just on their break, it was often spent in the Game Corner or a local restaurant, but for one person, it meant shopping in the largest department store on the entire continent.

Janine never much had a desire to shop, her ninja upbringing was minimalistic at best. As a pokémon trainer however, not to mention Gym Leader of the prestigious Fuchsia City Gym, it required certain equipment and such equipment could only be purchased in places such as the Celadon Department Store.

As Janine was browsing through the various types of pokéball, she bumped into someone, she jumped backwards and bowed low in apology, “My apologies, I will endeavour to improve awareness of my surroundings in the future.”

When Janine looked up, she saw a familiar young man ruffling his dark blue hair to make it look a little more windswept, he had an amused smile on his face, “There's no need to apologise, Janine, I know you didn't mean it.”

Janine started, “Falkner?”

“Yes, I'm surprised to see you here of all places, I thought you ninja lived traditionally.”

“I will forgive your ignorance this once,” Janine said, staring coldly into her fellow Gym Leader's eyes, “Do not cast assumptions on my culture.”

Falkner stepped back, looking embarrassed, “Looks like it's my turn to apologise, would you be so kind as to join me for tea so I can apologise properly?”

Janine nodded, still wearing her cold glare.

--

Two floors up, Janine and Falkner were seated at a small table in the corner of a café. A waitress entered from a door at the side of the counter, walking briskly over to the only currently occupied table. They were an odd couple, the waitress thought, the young man was looking sorry for himself and wearing a billowy sky blue jacket whereas the young woman was looking angry and wearing some kind of ninja get-up, all purple and with a long scarf tied around her neck. She wandered over anyway, asking if they would like anything to drink.

“Tea please, milk, no sugar.” The male replied.

“Tea also, your finest herbal blend.” The female said.

Neither of the two looked up at the waitress, instead deciding to stare accusingly into each other's eyes, “I'll bring those out for you,” The waitress said, smiling nervously.

“Thank you.” They replied in unison.

Creepy. The waitress scurried away, back through the door she had entered from, a small commotion could be heard from behind the counter.

No words were spoken whilst the two waited for the tea, accusatory glances were shared between them and nothing more.

The waitress finally reappeared holding two cups, she placed them carefully in front of whichever ordered what tea and told them to enjoy their drinks. She then backed away slowly, watching the strange pair a bit longer.

Janine picked up her cup first, taking a slow sip, “So?”

Falkner mirrored her, “Okay, I formally apologise to you for my lack of understanding into your culture and request that you correct my mistakes so I can learn not to repeat these mistakes in the future.”

Janine smiled triumphantly, “You are forgiven, Falkner.”

The Violet City Gym Leader laughed appreciatively.

“If you must know, we ninja adapt to the current climate. The samurai plate themselves in tough armour, we ninja develop skills to pierce the armour or to find the chinks in their armour. People build security cameras to protect their valuables, we ninja develop the skills to become invisible.”

Falkner looked taken aback, “You steal from people?” He asked incredulously, taking another sip of his tea.

Janine wrested the cup from Falkner's hands with a strength he wasn't expecting, “Don't drink that muck, take a sip of this. It isn't much better, this is herbal in the loosest sense of the word, but it's still better than that manufactured stuff.” She handed him her cup, which he grabbed in both hands.

“You're avoiding my question.” he added, blowing on the tea to cool it down before taking a sip.

Janine eyed him indignantly once more, “I do not 'steal' from people. Owners of museums or paranoid rich people employ me to break in and test the security systems. If I succeed, I return whatever I stole and provide my insight on how to improve the system.”

“Sounds exciting,” Falkner said, “Mmm, good tea.”

Janine smiled, Falkner logged this in his mind as a rare occurrence, “You should taste the tea I grow myself, or maybe you shouldn't, your palette isn't quite refined enough if you think this tea is good. I'd need to sensitise your tastes before you taste my special blend.”

“Are we talking about tea any more?” Falkner said, smirking.

“Of course we are,” Janine replied, nonplussed, “Pay attention, Falkner. Drink your tea.”

“I think you'll find this is your tea.”

“Pah, take it. It pales in comparison to my father's tea.”

This piqued Falkner's curiosity, “Ah yes, your father, Koga I believe.”

“Yes, he was promoted to serve the Elite Four after Agatha retired. I took control of the gym as I had been training for since birth.”

Falkner grinned reminiscently when she said this, “I can say the same about my father and me, he may not have gone off to join the Elite Four, but he could if he wanted to.”

“It takes a special breed of trainer, one with skill, power and discipline to ascend to the ranks of the Elite Four. My father obviously had what it takes otherwise it would be your father taking the mantle instead of him.”

“My father is more than a match for Koga,” Falkner replied, incensed.

Janine stayed placid, her eyes betraying no anger, “The state of affairs speak for themselves Falkner, did your father even receive a letter saying he was short-listed for the application?”

“My father left on a journey to better himself, he has no time to entertain thoughts of settling into a high pressure role. If the Elite Council did not consider him, it is only because he alerted them to his ineligibility himself.”

Janine laughed, although it could hardly be considered a laugh, Falkner imagined she didn't get much practice at it, “Your naïvety amuses me Falkner. Your vision shouldn't be blinded by faith and parental loyalty.”

“My vision is clear Janine. My father was a great man and an even greater trainer, there were very few who were his equal or better.”

“My father being one of the latter.” Janine added.

By this point, Falkner had completely abandoned the herbal tea, the waitress had abandoned her duties to eavesdrop on the heated conversation and Janine had abandoned all pretence, deciding that her calm approach wasn't getting through to the hard-headed flying-type user.

“Would it be safe to assume your father has trained a crobat?” Janine asked, resting her arms on the table.

“Yes he has, as a matter of fact.”

Janine brought her hands up and rested her head on them, “As a part poison, part flying type, it would be safe to assume to both of our father's have trained one or at least have a working knowledge of the crobat as a pokémon.”

“Yes, your point?” Falkner waved his hand impatiently.

“A good and fair way to decide who's father is the better trainer would be a battle, crobat versus crobat.”

Falkner nodded, “Yes, that would make sense. I don't know where my father is however, so I wouldn't know how to go about arranging such an event.”

“And my father is so wrapped up in his duties with the Elite Four that he doesn't always have time to make himself food, I end up having to bring him lunch at least once a week.”

“Then how do we settle this?”

Janine slumped back in her seat, “I know what my father would say, 'to compare yourself to another trainer is foolish. You are measured only by your own self.'

Falkner laughed, “Koga and my father would probably get along famously.”

“Yet what have we, the progeny so proud to speak up in their name, achieved thus far? Arguments and immaturity.”

Falkner hung his head, “We do them a disservice by bickering in their name.”

Janine stood suddenly and extended her hand, “Next week, this day, this hour, visit me at the gym and I'll give you a taste of my special herbal blend. What say you?”

Falkner rose to meet her and grabbed her hand, the shake was firm and her hands were as strong as ever, but they were unusually soft, “I look forward to it.”

“Madam Janine, you have a visitor.”

Janine sat alone in her modest bedroom, she was wrapped in a simple, purple kimono. She stood slowly without turning to the person at the door, “Invite him in and show him into the dining room, I'll meet him there.”

“How did you-?”

Janine turned her head, wearing a serious expression.

“As you wish, madam.”

Taking a deep breath, Janine pulled back the sleeves on her kimono and tried to steady herself. Her heart was beating faster than usual as of late, perhaps she was just nervous about Falkner's visit, last time they met it wasn't exactly under the best of circumstances. She took another calming breath and left her room.

It wasn't long before she was standing in front of the dining room door, her personal assistant stood outside, “He is waiting madam.” She bowed low and backed away under the gaze of her employer.

Janine slid the door open to see Falkner sat at the table, “I hope my assistant didn't give you too much trouble.”

Falkner waved a hand, “No, she was fine, a little on edge though.”

“Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, would you like to escort me to the kitchen?”

“It would be my pleasure.” Falkner stood and offered his arm, Janine grasped it with both hands, pulling him in the direction of the kitchen.

“I had my assistant lay out the essentials and boil the kettle, our tea should be ready in no time at all.”

Falkner grinned, “I've had a long flight over, I'll be glad for the respite.”

“I should warn you, the tea may relax you to the point of drowsiness, you may want to stay the night considering your fatigue.”

“Was that an invitation?” Falkner asked smirking.

“You may want to pay attention Falkner, of course it was an invitation. Although, perhaps your fatigue is affecting your concentration, the tea will help that.”

Falkner groaned, she could be so dense, “Tea sounds lovely.”

They walked into the kitchen to see Janine's assistant putting the finishing touches onto their cups of tea, her hands shook slightly as she handed a cup to Janine, who had unhooked herself from Falkner's arm. “Pull yourself together girl, you shake like a leaf caught in a stiff wind” she scolded.

“I think she shaking because she's nervous, perhaps you should try being a little nicer to her.” Falkner interjected.

“You dare tell me how to treat my staff? In my own house, no less?” Janine poked a finger into the man's chest, pushing him back towards the table.

Falkner pushed back, “The only thing more uptight than you is the ponytail you keep your hair in. Look how you treated me when we met in Celadon and I'm someone you would consider your equal.” Falkner put a hand on her shoulder and pushed her into a nearby chair, “Take a sip of your tea.”

She glared at him, but took a sip of her tea all the same.

“Your father may have taught you how to be a Gym Leader, but he failed when it came to teaching you humility.” Falkner looked stern, a look that Janine couldn't help comparing to her father's whenever she would make a mistake.

Surprisingly, Janine didn't hit back with a biting retort. Instead, her eyes filled with tears as she slumped in her chair and lay her head on the table, shaking slightly.

Falkner sighed and sat in a chair next to her, “What did I say?”

She sat up and turned to him, her eyes were red and puffy, “It's nothing, you just reminded me how weak and pathetic I am. I'm not worthy to hold such a prestigious position when there are far more qualified candidates.”

“You're the one who has the job Janine. It doesn't matter what other people are doing, no matter how good or how deserving they are.”

“Nepotism. It was only by my father's word that I got the job.”

“Regardless, you're still a brilliant trainer, I've seen you battle. You're scary good actually.”

Janine wiped a tear from her eye using a sleeve of the kimono, “That's kind of you, but you said it yourself in regards to your father, there are probably plenty of more eligible trainers who decided not to settle down. I'm both a coward and a fool.”

Falkner sighed, “Come on, drink your tea, it'll calm you down.” He took a sip of his own tea and motioned for her to do the same.

Janine took a deep breath and coughed. Falkner reached into an inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a pristine handkerchief, he dabbed at the tears still clinging to Janine's eyes, “You look tired, you should rest.”

She shook her head, “It's my duty as host to attend to your needs before my own.”

Falkner smiled, “What if my needs are to make sure you're alright?”

“Then I'd have to allow you to aid me.” Janine's eyes sparkled with a few remaining tears.

Falkner stood, Janine imitated him, staring incredulously into his eyes, “Let me escort you to your room, you'll need the privacy.”

Janine sidled up to him, still staring, tea now forgotten, “I'll point you in the right direction.” She grabbed his arm and he began walking, she steered him when necessary, pulling him down corridors and through doors until they had reached a unique sliding door, a sign on the wall next to it read Anzu.

She slid the door open and pushed Falkner inside, “There are some more things you could do for me Falkner. Prepare my bed whilst I... de-robe.”

“It sounds like you need the help most, Anzu.” Falkner smirked, walking slowly over to her.

Janine made her way towards an en suite bathroom, stopped just before it and peered over her shoulder. She slipped the kimono off of her shoulder, revealing a black leather holster against the pale skin, several kunai were fixed into little straps along the leather, “I think I need some help removing all of these straps.”

Falkner raised an eyebrow, “All?”

Janine removed the other shoulder, revealing another holster and more kunai. She lowered it again, revealing another holster on her lower back, two dangerously sharp daggers sat sheathed in place. The kimono dropped to the floor, showing a network of leather straps all along her legs and tastefully covering her more... sensitive areas.

Falkner's look of shock and awe was all she needed, she turned to face him and three thunks sounded around his head. He looked up to see three shuriken lodged into the wall. He tried to pry them out but found he couldn't, all he managed to do was cut his thumb on the bladed edge. There was a sharp intake of breath as Falkner stared at his bloody thumb. He raised it to his mouth but Janine stopped him half way, “Let me” she said, lowering her mouth onto his thumb and cleaning the wound with her tongue. “You taste good.”

“So,” Falkner laughed nervously, “What was with the ninja stars?”

Janine's smile was mischievous and catlike, “Just showing you that I could kill you, I just don't want to.”

“That's... reassuring.”

“Unless of course,” Janine's smile was even bigger than before, “You like a little pain.”

Janine has been watching Secretary it seems. Hmm.

At least Falkner doesn't seem to mind.

Read, review, reprimand.

"It is my destiny."
Okay, grammar-wise, this isn't your best. I think you kept hitting the comma key when you wanted the period, and you let your fingers work on instinct. It happens, they tend to have a mind of their own sometimes.

Next, it could be because she is Koga's daughter, but I find Janine's dialogue a little... well, not flowery, but a bit out-of-place. She sounds almost like a regent--no, of monarchy, somehow. I don't know what to think of it. Falkner's dialogue is more believable than hers.

The premise is rather strange, to say the least. I don't know if it's because there's another chapter or not, you didn't exactly say if there was. But to have two gym leaders whose fathers are very well-known argue over who has the strongest parent is almost predictable, but I wouldn't have known how they would go through with it. I understand where you got the idea because of the dialogue in the game, a rather minor event that I don't think too many people thought more on. Then again, I think you like the obscurity of things.

When it comes to euphemisms, I wasn't sure where they were, or what they were. The writing must have covered them up really well, since I couldn't find anything that would be taken one way. Well... actually, I had this idea of belligerent sexual tension the whole time, if just a mild form of it. I don't know if that was what you were going for, though. (Was she seducing him at the end, by the way?)

All-in-all, unless I decide to ponder more on it, I found it okay. I suppose if you had mentioned whether it was a one-shot or not, I would have pushed myself a step further and think harder while reading between the lines.

Guys, why do you bash grammar? I know it's important, but it's the story that counts.

I've not had time to respond in the past few days, sorry 'bout that.

@Kochoupink

Your commas make me sad.

It makes me sad to know that I've mad you sad. I'll endeavour to make my grammar better in the future.

I don't think I've seen you around Fan Fiction before, I've only ever seen you in Misc.

@Charizardfan900

Out of pure interest is this a one shot?

Yes it is.

@Kutie Pie

I wrote her as somewhat socially awkward and formal, which because of her father (who she greatly respects) and her ninja upbringing has lead her to act that way. This is just how I personally view Janine as a character.

Let's be fair, how much exposure has she had in canon? Barely anything in the games (HG/SS gave us something at least) and she barely appears in the Manga. I've had to grasp at a lot of straws here.

The premise is rather strange, to say the least. I don't know if it's because there's another chapter or not, you didn't exactly say if there was. The entire premise is "Janine and Falkner argue in Celadon Department Store about their fathers. Sexual Tension ensues."

I just took the concept to it's logical conclusion.

When it comes to euphemisms, I wasn't sure where they were, or what they were. The writing must have covered them up really well, since I couldn't find anything that would be taken one way. I hate sticking ratings in the title and this was my way of saying that there was probably going to be some sexual implications made in this fic, don't say I didn't warn you.

Falkner does make off-hand comments about a possible attraction from Janine for him. Janine is seemingly oblivious to it until near the end when she notices that Falkner actually likes her and that perhaps she likes likes him as well.

It's fair that they're pointing out my bad grammar. If I don't get told, I'll never learn.

Although, it would be nice to get an opinion on the story instead of just grammar fixes. Incidentally, what do you think of the story, seeing as you're so adamant about it?

Cipher and I love to read bad writing aloud, so we often visit the fanfiction section. I occasionally feel moved to post if I think that the writing is so not-terrible that it can be salvaged by proper application of grammar.
