The upcoming The Speed Gamers Metroid Marathon starts March 12th at 6:00PM Central Time and will run for 72 hours. We will be playing through all of the Metroid games while raising money for HAFS (Halton Autistic Family Support Group).

TheSpeedGamers have been streaming video game marathons for over a year to raise money for various charities. In total they have raised over $125,000 dollars and played 15 marathons. They have raised over $50,000 in their week long Final Fantasy Marathon, and have made multiple news appearances. This upcoming marathon will be for HAFS. This charity's provides services to the whole family unit of families in Halton, Cheshire, England who have a child or young adult with a condition within the broad range of ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders).

During the marathon we will have multiple contests to win various prizes.

Awesome, another marathon. I probably won't be watching this one though, the only ones that ever hold my attention are the RPG ones, even though RPGs are generally the most boring type of game to watch someone play. Good luck though.

As much as I love the Metroid series, this doesn't really seem like that epic of an event. I mean there are only 9 games for them to play and most of them are intended to be beaten in just under a couple hours. They are basically leaving themselves 8 hours to play each game which is really more than enough. Are they going for a 100% clear rating? Is it only going to be 1 person playing at a time?

Honestly, I love the Metroid series, but this is sounding like it is going to be the shortest fund-raising marathon ever. Unless of course they've never played the Metroid series before, then they might have a bit more of a challenge awaiting them.

I'm pretty sure the only time they play them all at once is during the Pokemon marathons.

I couldn't find a speed run for Metroid Prime 3, but for anyone who hasn't played these games, some of these games can be beaten in as little time as 1/2 an hour while the majority take just over an hour. I'm seriously curious to know what the Speed Gamers plan on doing for the other 60 hours after they've beaten the series. Even some of the 100% speed run times are pretty low.

I'm considering watching this, but I think it's going to be over before it even starts.

I thought that it wasn't a real speedrun with all the fancy tricks and junk just a normal get through the game normally as fast as you can sort of thing.

The problem is that the Metroid series was practically built for speed running challenges. Most of the best endings are unlocked when you beat the game in under 1-2 hours. Sequence breaking just makes speed running even more possible.

They gave themselves 3 days to beat 9 games. Unfortunately, most speed runners can beat the series in less than 1 day.

I think this challenge is going to be more boring than anything, unless they have someone who has never played a Metroid title do all the playing.

The WR for Metroid Prime 3 is about 10 hours I think. There are no big sequence breaks and little exploits. That game alone will take longer than the other 8 combined.

On M2K2, there is a topic were people post the time of all their records combined. The top ones are above 30 hours total. And that is their seperate records. When you have to do all those runs after eachother without retries, it will get difficult.

Have you ever done a Mario marathon before? A few months ago (before NSMB Wii got released) I figured it would be doable to complete all the console Mario platform games in under 24 hours. I would be interested to see if that actually were possible.

This June we are doing a week long Mario marathon. If "Mario" is in the game title it will be played.

With practice before hand, I can do SMW in less than four hours, NSMBWii in much less than 2 1/2, SMB 1 takes less than 30 minutes when you actually beat it (but it takes a lot of tries), SMB2 and Lost Levels Ive never played, SMB3 and Galaxy I've never speed ran, Sunshine I can do in less than 4, 64 I've never beat. They have done (and 100% for Sunshine, Galaxy, and 64) Mario, Mario 2, Mario 2 (Lost Levels), Mario 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, Super Mario 64, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy in less than 48 hours before. Really the Mario games arent very hard to speedrun with a little practice.

Including all the shovelware games? What are you even going to with Mario Paint?

Each of the Mario Bros games and Mario World can be done in about 10-15 minutes each. Mario 64 takes about 30 minutes. I think SMS takes about 5 hours and Galaxy probably takes about 7-10 hours. If I take 90 minutes for NSMBWii, that is about 20 hours on near-perfect runs. However, you can't expect every run to be near-perfect. It is as you said yourself:

SMB 1 takes less than 30 minutes when you actually beat it (but it takes a lot of tries)

You will mess up many times. WR runs take months of continuous retries to do. You only get one try. And I don't think any of you realise that.

Also, SMW in four hours? You do realise the Star World exists, right?

For the Metroid times, I'm going to take Metroid Prime as an example because that is the one I know best. The current WR is IIRC 1:07. This requires many tricks that are far too difficult to pull of consistantly. A better time to aim for would be the 2005 WR, which was about 1:30.
Then there are still many, many glitches that are difficult to do. Space Jump Early will take a few tries, Artifact of Wild Early will be even more insane. I expect the time to be closer to 2:30.

Crank up the tempo so it's ridiculously fast for a given song?

You clearly don't know the Metroid community well enough. They're pretty damn consistent, as far as I'm concerned. If they have the right version of Metroid Prime (the "non" players choice version), Space Jump early is ridiculously easy. Let's not forget they don't have to go for 100% completion. Therefore, they can skip a fair amount of items if need be. The 1:07 you speak of belongs to 'kip'. I'd say it's possible, considering the there's no set rules for what must be accomplished.

But these aren't devoted Metroid Prime speedrunners. They haven't trained on all those techniques for months. You can't possibly compare some generic speedrunners WR holders.
I admit that I only own the PAL version of Metroid Prime, so some of the tricks are a bit harder for me, but stuff such as Artifact of Wild will still screw them over.
I am pretty sure they will be able to all games in under 72 hours, but it is not nearly as easy as some of the posters here make it out to be. Seriously, beating the entire series in under 12 hours, Penguinist? You can barely beat Metroid Prime 3 in under 12 hours.

SMG2 better be out by then.

And according to the big Nintendo summit thing it will be. They also said on their site that now they will add SMG2 to their list of games to be played. If I don't get SMG2 by then then I will surely be watching when they play SMG2.
