Thrakandor… a land of unparalleled beauty and power, full of mystery. On a clear day, one could see so much of the majesty of its natural wonders.
The glittering sapphire lakes, their waves sparkling like liquid jewels against the sandy shores. Fish could be seen swimming in the pristine, clear, warm waters of the lakes and rivers, happy, healthy, and unpolluted. To crown the wonders of water, were the many waterfalls from the mountain springs that fed the land its water. Towering waterfalls, some but a misty stream, others were powerful cascading torrents. Some flowed down the mountainside, a more gentle flow.
On warm spring days, the smell of wildflowers would come on the breezes that blew through the emerald fields, creating waves through the grass like a tranquil sea. Forests of great and old trees stood as strong and proud as if they had been there since time began, and some seemed old enough for it to be true.
But the is one wonder that was no a thing of beauty; the mighty, soaring, white capped peaks of the mountains that ranged the entire borders of Thrakandor. Snowy and icy, even in the hottest summer, they are harsh and impassible. These mountains were what prevented people from just coming and going into or out of Thrakandor, because there were only three passes through the mountains that could lead to Thrakandor, and all three were strictly regulated. The reason for limiting just who could enter Thrakandor was simple: Dragons.
Scientific research in Thrakandor pointed to the fact that it was the birthplace of all species of dragon Pokemon in the world. Not only were all species of dragons in the other regions of the world found here in great abundance, but there were others only seen in Thrakandor as well. A stranger would be shocked if he or she were to stroll down the streets in one of the towns. Dratini and Dragonair were in great abundance, as well as Bagon, Shelgon, and even Dragonite and Salamence.
Despite the abundance of Pokemon, there were no trainers. No trainers, no gyms, no league. Pokemon were friends, partners, pets, but never used in battle. The only trainers that were ever seen were foreigners who were allowed into the land. But there were few who were allowed to enter. Those who did, often met hostility from the locals.
Dragons were everywhere, but the biggest ones were found only high in the mountains. There is one species of dragon that is so violent, so unpredictably dangerous, and so powerful, that its territories were guarded to prevent deaths of humans and Pokemon. These dragons were feared, and coveted for their power, for even a young one, a juvenile was extremely strong. A juvenile alone could take on all the evolved forms of either Dratini or Bagon at once!
This is the reason that the Silver Guard, or Silvers, was formed. Their job was to protect the land and prevent foolish trainers from entering. They regulated and monitored all foreigners who entered their lands. But above them, was there leader, Guardian, or The Keeper of the Gates. The Keeper was like the ruler of the land, and had to undergo intense training and preparation. Traditionally, the Keeper had always been a male, but now, there was, for the first time in recorded history, a female as the Keeper.
On the surface, Thrakandor is a land full of peace, with the occasional rampaging dragon, but that peace is only skin deep. There are people who hate having foreigners in the lands, and had formed a league of terrorists with the intention to keep foreigners out. This was why the Keeper always had to keep their face and identity unknown, for the terrorist group, also known as the Dark Flame, would target the Keeper if they could. Four Keepers had been killed before it became a policy for the Keeper’s identity to remain unknown to the public and most of the rest of the Guard.
The Dark Flame has been one of the reasons that the Keepers have been reluctant to allow a Pokemon League in Thrakandor, but it is not as if the Pokemon League Committee hasn’t tried! But now that there is a new Keeper, the Committee is going to try its luck once again.
And that is where our story.. begins….

“Lance.”
“Lance!”
“LANCE! Wake up!”
Dragon Master and G-Man Lance started awake at the third shout of his name. At first he was baffled, and then realized where he was, or rather, where he was headed. Thrakandor, the Dragon Pokemon Homeland. Why was he going to such a forbidding sounding place? Simply to hopefully convince the newest ruler to open the Gates to the land to the Pokemon League.
Faint hope if history serves correct. Lance thought as he gazed up to see that they were approaching the mighty Gates into the land. He stared up at their intricate designs, depicting dragons of all sorts, some that exist today, and some that have been gone from the world for ages, even before man had come.
He remembered the first time he had seen the land’s immense gates, bracketed by even larger and more forbidding mountains. He had been a young trainer then, not yet Champion or Dragon Master. He also recalled the nice girl behind the desk who had tested him to see if he was ready to travel and train in Thrakandor. She was about his age, and hardly looked like someone who would be in Thrakandor’s official militia, the Silvers, even if it was a desk job.
Now what am I doing thinking about girls at a time like this? I am supposed to be a representative right now! I am representing the League as a League Champion!
Lance sighed and turned to the man who woke him up.
“So, we’re finally at the Gate? Did you get any rest, Mr. Atton? How are the others, are they awake yet?”
Mr. Atton sighed, replying “Yes, I got rest, and all the others except Kortharr are awake. I’m going to need help with him. He is even worse than you are when it comes to being woken up.”
Lance laughed. Kortharr was a very heavy sleeper, and sometimes they joked that it would take a Hydro Pump from a Gyarados to wake him up. He was an odd man, but then again, he had been born and raised in Thrakandor. This fact made him invaluable to the Committee in their attempts in Thrakandor.
“Well, if you wish to see if a Hydro Pump really can wake him up, I do have my Gyarados.”
Mr. Atton laughed, and replied that it would not be necessary. Lance smiled and turned to the window, from where the mountains and Northern Gate into Thrakandor could be seen. How he longed to visit that land. Lance wished to see first hand its beauty that Kortharr had described to him.
Little did he now… just how much he would see… As the proverb goes… be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

The meeting began, and Lance was getting curious, and frustrated. The customs dictated that they meet the Keeper, but not learn her name or see her face, or even hear the true voice. At the beginning of the meeting, she had apologized to them for the security, but it was required.
The Committee members were the ones who did all the talking and reasoning, he was only needed for his presence and what he was representing. Finally the Keeper reached her decision.
“I shall consider your proposal, but on one condition. It may help if a trainer with your Committee spent time in Thrakandor, studying our life here, with a guide of course, and were to see our land through our eyes. Then that same trainer would take the same guide and show him or her one of the regions with a Pokemon League, to see what it is like through your eyes. Then the guide would report to me and I will make my judgment on what they gather. Does this sound reasonable?”
All the heads of the Committee members jerked up at this point, especially Lance’s head. This was far better than they could have hoped for! Aan actual chance for a true consideration.
Mr. Atton eagerly gave his agreement before the Keeper could change her mind. “Oh yes! That sounds like a splendid idea. As to the trainer…”
“You already have a very capable one with you at the moment. Lance is it? I understand you are both a League Champion and Dragon Master. How would you like to take a special tour of Thrakandor? Your understanding of Dragon Pokemon may help a great deal.”
If Lance had been a kid, he would have been jumping up and down with joy! He would see Thrakandor, and would probably see the best of what it had to offer!
“I would be honored to see your lands, and guide one of your people through one of the regions with a League, My Lady.”
For a brief moment, Lance caught an unusual grin on Kortharr’s face, a man who almost never smiled, and this one did not seem like a happy one, but it was gone in an instant. He simply decided to forget it.
“As not everything is truly as peaceful in Thrakandor as we could wish, I will be sending with you one of my right-hand officers to not only serve as a guide, but as a guardian, just in case. You must know all aspects of what it is that you are getting into, the good, and the bad. Please wait in the hall, and they will join you shortly to go and stock-up on the supplies you will need. Now, I have a journey of my own that has been delayed long enough by this meeting.”

Lance was sent out to an entrance hall that was totally unremarkable, except for the walls. They were covered with engravings, engravings of names. Lance examined the names, curious as to what they were for. He recognized some as trainers who he had heard of. He wondered if Gareth Jendar was on this wall.
“It’s an impressive sight, isn’t it? All those names. This is a rather tragic wall. All those people were trainers who gained access into our lands, and met their ends here.” A female voice came, carrying a distinct sad tone.
Lance turned to see a familiar looking Silver officer. “Really? That’s a lot of names.”
She smiled sadly. And then Lance recognized her. The black hair, tawny-gold skin, squared features, and the ice-blue azure of her eyes, it was the desk clerk from his first visit to these gates.
“Well, you’ve gone from desk clerk to right-hand officer to the Guardian. You certainly climbed the ranks. So, these are those who have died. I hope he isn’t on here.”
“A friend? I may know.”
“Not a friend, but a member of my Dragon Master’s clan. The left after an argument with my grandfather and traveled here. His name is Gareth Jendar. We never heard much from him, but what we did hear made it clear that he had fallen in love with Thrakandor. But then we heard nothing more.”
The officer seemed to start a bit at the name, but her recovery was quick.
“I know the name, but I do not know any story for it. Come, it does not do to dwell on the past. Oh, forgive me, my name is Osiris. Come, we need to gather our supplies for the journey. There is a long road ahead, and it is not all a walk in the park.” Osiris beaconed and turned and walked from the hall, her military boots clicking on the floor sharply. She passed a group of officers who stopped and pulled into an immediate sharp salute which she returned in an absentminded way, as if her mind was elsewhere.
Do not dwell on the past, eh? Take your own advice, girl.
