Tipping Your Server

I'm British too, and I feel the same way. I'm far off constantly polite though ^^ I'll give the waiter the expression, good or bad, that most suits the service provided, and I'll give them a small tip if they do something good that they didn't have to do, but did it out of kindness or generosity.

I think I've been only to one or two places that included a mandatory tip in the bill, which infuriated me.

My brother and I have a "system":

5 bucks if you were below or at average and/or we didn't order a lot
10 bucks if you were better than average and we ordered at least 20 bucks' worth
20 bucks if you made our jaws drop you were so good

Well that shows a certain kindness, since you give them a tip even if they're not as good as they should be.

Only to a certain extent. If a waiter/waitress just ticks me off, I'm not giving them a dime. I've been to restaurants where my family is the only one there (like if it just opened) and we rarely saw the wait staff. There is no excuse for such laziness. Also, at restaurants that serve spicy stuff, I don't want to wait thirty minutes for a drink. I don't wait that long though. Once I realize I'm being ignored, I start standing up and "locating" my server. I do it politely and without a raised voice, but with a tone that expresses my frustration.

Haha, I know how you feel! Once we had to wait about an hour for our food, at which point they came back and said they couldn't find our order, and had to do it again, because the stupid waiter had lost his notebook. Then, ten mintues later, they came back and said they'd ran out of an ingredient, at which point we just pushed them aside and left.

I really dont like being expected to tip.

especially when I go out with my girlfriend, were both on college (wwell going to uni), and she has a weekend job, i unfortuanately dont. wich means we dont have very much money. so say a meal comes to £26. im not going to want to spend an extra 10-20 % on top of that. when I hardly have any money to begin with. maybe if it came to like £19.80 i may leave them 20p or somehting. but more than a pound, i just cant justify leaving.

do the chef's get tipped? they make the food afterall?
would you tip a supermarket checkout assistant?
would you tip a bus driver?
would you tip a postman?

so why waiters?

You know what REALLY galled me? In Texas (I don't know if they still have places outside of Texas), we have a restaurant called Luby's. It's more like a cafeteria than a "restaurant". They did some sort of revamp and added wait staff (they had people who would help you get drinks before, but sometimes you were just on your own). The advertisement for hiring these people said they would get paid ten dollars an hour.

And they HONESTLY started expecting TIPS.

1. I'm not fond of paying a tip in a cafeteria. It isn't a restaurant.
2. THEY GET PAID TEN FRICKING DOLLARS AN HOUR!

Bad and Nationwide
I tip based on service, of course in Australia minimum wage is just that so they won't be paid under minimum wage if I don't tip them.

1.- Luby's clearly states that it's a cafeteria.
2.- A waiter salary is pretty low, most of them win more via tips than their salary itself.
3.- Tips are a form of gratitude for their service, you are not forced to pay them, but you should if he/she gives a good service.

Chef's get paid a significant amount more than servers.

Again, they get paid a signifant amount more than a server, not to mention do 1/4th the work a server does for you.

I've never had a pleasant bus ride

My family use to. We had a really good post man years ago. He was never late, always made sure our mail box was closed and when a car was in the drive way he came around back if something needed signed in order to be delivered rather than leaving one of those post notes telling you to go pick it up yourself. Tips to him were in the form of home made jelly every year from the grapes we grow in our back yard. We don't have the same postman any more though.

While I say tips should not be mandatory and should be in appriciation, I also feel it should definitely be considered if your server didn't suck; mainly because your server does more for you than any other worker of a business and gets paid vastly less. Now this of course ranges from place to place and country to country. Countries like Australia as mentioned don't allow waitresses and waiters to be paid less than minimum wage. Places where wages are fair for the server tipping is far less expected.

As I've implied, I'm a pretty good tipper (for a college kid anyways), and where I go regularly I get damn good service because of this. Often I get free drinks or extras because I'm a regular that shows a great appreciation for the work my normal waitresses do. I don't know about anyone else but when I get a free piece of pie I'm ecstatic.

I dunno, Preparing a meal for you or carrying a meal to you. I know which one I would have thought takes more work.

I would have said they were on less as its a less skilled job.

I was talking about this with my Girlfriend last night, and she said, "yes they get paid next to nothing, but so do I, and I never gets tipped."
I mean as long as their on minumum wage, I don't see a problem. and I did see an intresting story about it.

so Assuming it go's ahead they wont be allowed to be payed below minimum wage.

and also was that the drivers fault though? he has driven you 'x' amount of miles, and got you there safely. I think from my experience its more the bus its self or other passengers that are the problem with bus rides.

Tipping, believe it or not, is not just a city in China. However, most people these days pay with either a credit or debit card while purchasing basically everything, so plastic is used for tips. Interchange fees and other things may prevent them from obtaining the total amount. Source for this article: best online payday loans i can call. Indeed, one should constantly make an effort to tip waiters with cash wherever possible.
