To the Skies Once More (Parts 1 & 2) (90 & 91)

Almighty Zard

He has returned.
You don't get it, we needed to waste precious screentime to show you how amazing and cool Lucario is by showing him in two separate battles. And we needed two battles for Roy instead of fleshing out Liko's school situation. Writers know what really matters in this story. :)

what does Lucario have to do at all with what the person you quoted was saying?

Trying to spin the narrative in a way to bash something you don't like while trying to make Liko look good, never thought i'd see such strong bias and hatred lead to that.

I do have to wonder about that though, Anne we know is ok with it since she knew, but no one else did, wonder if others might think different of Liko, perhaps even her teachers assuming she continues classes.

Watched Episode 2 / Part 2 — Pretty good.

The episode opens with Roy as the narrator, and hearing Yuka Terasaki in that older!Roy portrayal was a real treat — she’s really got some chops. Roy feels more grounded and less rambunctious, building upon that sharper attention to detail we started seeing in the Terastal Debut arc. I loved that callback when he copied Friede’s lines while spotting Liko from his Flying-type — it was a slick homage. Anne noticing his change, and his evolving role as an adventurer-investigator in the world. I think there was an intentional juxtaposition too — Pagogo confined in its ball after the fallout, Liko regressing a bit emotionally, while Lucario makes a shiny, dramatic debut against Anne. It’s a clear symbolic shift. The battle scene — with Liko watching Roy's “new partner” — even drove that home visually.

That said, I would've preferred a different story beat rather than a repeat of Liko's early-series characterization. I really felt there should’ve been more visible drama and consequences around her hiding her RVT membership. When she’s outed, there’s no real blowback. It reflects how modern Pokémon tends to be "nicer" — less willing to show truly abrasive or harsh reactions from characters toward our heroes. Honestly, it would’ve been powerful if Liko had chosen to leave on her own terms, not because she was socially pressured or subtly ostracized but that ostracization happening but her still carrying on unwaveringly. Let there be stakes, let the internal battle be mirrored with an external one. Instead, it all wrapped up with a moral victory minus the actual confrontation. A bit anticlimactic.

As for the animation — definitely felt like a cost-cutting episode. Lots of pans, slow motion, and still shots, which I get given the industry's talent shortages and the whole studio poaching mess. It fits the slower, internal-dialogue-heavy tone, especially with Liko in despair, but yeah, the battle dragged a bit. The pacing took me out of it. Also, Masquernya’s proportions felt off — they couldn’t quite decide how to frame its legs in motion. That said, the magician aesthetic and theatrics were fun. Flower Trick's sound effect though? It’s giving balloon pop, not lethal move. Campy in a weird/charming way. I liked the way Charm Voice swallowed the bulbs — very clever counter. Achigator’s “song” being stronger was a highlight too. It’s great to see he’s still Roy’s singing partner at heart, evolving his own way even with Lucario now in the spotlight.

The ending definitely suggests Spinel brainwashed or tamed the wild Six Heroes — and now plans to use them for his own world domination scheme? Honestly wild to think that he was once just a low-level Exceed researcher, and now he’s running both the Explorers and Exceed, using their resources like a corporate-crime syndicate hybrid. Creating a global threat like Rakurium just to be the one who offers the solution? It’s some textbook villain manipulation — destroy your enemies’ reputation while building your own leverage and power. I was starting to get worried with how often the Explorers were taking Ls, but this brought Spinel back. Even with setbacks, he’s clearly still ten steps ahead, playing the long game. Curious what’s up with the remaining Explorers now — feels like Amethio and his crew are gone, but I wonder if he’s still in play. Maybe he's got Zygarde and is plotting a rogue comeback to take Spinel down?

I get being justifiably tired of Lucario as a shillmon, but in this case, it didn’t even appear enough to warrant alladat.

(he is judging what weird thing you just said)
Why do I get the feeling this Lucario is somehow going to appear in all the episodes of the rest of the saga.

Especially considering 3/4th of the special took place at Liko’s school lololll. Lucario got a brief introduction and immediately put back in its ball, Crocalor was out battling longer than it haha. These people truly are watching the show with very hateful lens and we are gonna have to deal with that more and more as this timeskip continues. They had more than enough time to flesh out Liko’s situation but they didn’t. Par the course for Liko in Horizons.

Also, I really don’t get the complaint here, because unlike Roy who’s team seemed to be balanced out, all Liko uses is her Meowscarada. Liko also got two battles, one they did off screen, and both battles had Meowscarada. Next week we are getting more Meowscarada battle. In the previews for Mega Voltage there’s still a Meowscarada battle out in some grassfields that is still unaccounted for. Why are the Lucario complainers ignoring this? Liko has two other Pokémon and they made the distinct writing choice to take one of them out of the picture. But as always, when it comes to Liko, viewers from this forum tend to turn the blind eye to her writing follies.

Call me Robert guys
I watched the episodes over and over to get a good feel for the writing and I have to say after the first initial watch I really am not feeling this timeskip. The characters that experienced the most growth during this timeskip are Roy and Dot, but Dot barely got a chance to even be involved with the episode and as soon as Roy’s stuff really gets good, unfortunately it is immediately juxtaposed by Liko. I’m gonna be real here, Liko being sad about Friede’s death is realistic and makes sense, the idea that she’s just been basically hiding away for a year while her friends move forward is super frustrating.

How many times are we supposed to go through the same tale of the main girl being “left behind” for a period of time while everyone else shines? Once Liko comes back into her own, she’s back to being the same character she always was. Also, I really do dislike Meowscarada always having to be the one to get Liko out of the same misguided funks over and over again. Terapagos has been MIA and the hat Pokémon continues to be a glorified background PNG. Just looking at the way Liko and Roy’s teams are treated in the opening makes me cackle.

and while I enjoyed the battles, it just made me yearn even more for a chance to have this colorful cast of characters be able to shine on leveled playing fields. Roy won because he did what Pokémon trainers do best, TRAINED, and while Liko apparently was doing it similarly on a smaller scale at school, it just shows the polar opposite treatment of these characters. I left this special wanting to watch more of Roy, Dot, and Uruto’s adventures, but instead we had to take an intermission to recruit a character who didn’t even have the decency to watch her friends’ streams haha

Maybe I’m being too harsh but meh, I’m not that hooked. Roy is awesome, Dot is awesome, Uruto is awesome, Liko is a slog. I really wish this Laqulium stuff would just retire itself as well. With Blueberry on the horizon, I do hope they don’t turn it into a Liko intervention like they did at Naranja.
For me, Liko is the only one that is acting normal, like imagine your mentor and big brother figure just vanishing in a tragic way, it would be devastating. We even got a clip of Liko's scream after what happened to Friede and it was heartbreaking, outside of Cap, she took it the hardest. I think it's made even worse that they actually searched for Friede and couldn't find him and now they can't even look anymore because of the Explorers shutting the area down so she's stuck in a limbo. Then you factor in that one of your pokemon just went into hibernation and is connected to everything that day and you're constantly reminded of it. I also think losing Lucius's journal really hit her hard since that was in her family for so long.

Also let's be very clear, Liko isn't the only one not keeping in touch. Neither Dot or Roy or any of the others have been messaging each other either. Roy straight up said that Dot just messaged him randomly after hearing about the abnormal pokemon.

We saw that in this episode at the end, Liko messaged someone but who knows who. I assume Orla or her mom or dad.

It also kinda looks like Liko kinda...gave up, too...kinda understandable, honestly, considering how she was first introduced; my guess, the other kids will have a bit of trauma too...rather they may have formed a negative habit, like for example, look at Roy, sure, the Uruto kid's annoying but would he have really abandoned someone in the middle of the night because of that? Don't remember Roy doing that to any of the girls before...and well, Dot...Dot already had issues, who knows if she's even leaving her room at all, or panics when she goes outside.

I dunno, the episode made a good (or bad) show of putting Liko on the spot...she's depressed, and depression can be a cycle, starts once, starts twice, gets better, gets worse...but I'm don't trust the writers to make it work at all, the best arc we had with a character like that was Dawn, but she was confident in her skills before she was not..and it took a while to get better.

I'm more interested in what that pretty boy Spinel is trying to pull off with the Laqua whatever smoke, ruling the world trying to solve a problem you really can't control has not worked in any evil team's favor, you know...
