Toonami's Month of Miyazaki Week 1: "Spirited Away" Review Thread

[imgsize=342]http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/3273/spiritedawayposter9lf.jpg[/imgsize]
The Highest Grossing movie in Japanese History "Spirited Away", the first international film to win an Oscar in "Best Animated Feature". Today, a not-so-random girl finds a village where humans are turned into Animals...sounds like a sci-fi movie more like...never mind!!!

Tonight at 7:30, right after Transformers Cybertron...bleh!

Spirited away is a great anime IMO. And i wouldnt say that it is a sci fi film at all. I mean, it is more magic and fantacy. I wish that they would actually show good films like this on the UK version of Toonami, and if it is in the UK, I havnt heard anything about it.

I missed the first 20 minutes where Chihero gets to the spirit world. How does she get there?

Aside from that, I thought the movie was great. Not only was the animation superb, the plotline was also awesome. It's a shame that[SPOIL]Haku can't get back to the real world[/SPOIL]

Well, [SPOIL]Chihero gets to the spirit by crossing the river she crosses at the end. And because it was night, the spirits were about to visit. This made the place turn into the spirit world. I am not to sure about this but Haku tried to worn her to get out before night fall, so i am guessing that thats what made it like that.[/SPOIL]

It is a really good story if you ask me. I thought that it was good for everyone, but there is a printing error on the DVD case. It says it is a 12 where i am from, the UK, when it is a PG.

well it was an awesome movie butt can you guys tell me what bwas up with haku an how she got home beacause i did'nt see all of it

Spirited Away is an excellente movie. I loved everything about it. The story line, the character growth, the signs of Japanese culture. I also like the fact that Haku could become a dragon. That was cool. No wonder this won an Oscar. I saw this movie before when it aired on that odd Friday night lineup. The ending made me feel a bit of a mix of happiness and sadness. It was still a beautiful movie. I plan to watch the other movies in this month of Miyazaki, except for Princess Mononoke. From what I heard in the commercials, the story line sounds interesting, but too much violence and killing for my taste. Anyway, Spirited Away is a great movie and I may get it on DVD one of these days.

I loved this movie sooo much that I recorded it this time around. I absolutely love the fantasy, action, romance plot it's got and it's so brilliant. It's great that it won Best Animated Feature (*cough*Howl'sMovingCastleshould'vewonthisyear*cough*) but it's so great with the relationship that Haku and Chihiro have. Aww, it's so kawaii. [spoil]My friends say it's weird though. They'll say, 'How can she fall in love with a river?' And I'm like, 'If the river is that cute, wouldn't you?' :D[/spoil]

Anywho, I loved this movie and I plan on recording all of Miyazaki's movies this month. *sighs* Best month of my life, right here. :p

Haku was a River spirit, not an actual river, IIRC.

Yeah, well, my stupid friends are well...stupid and didn't get it. :p Still, you have to agree with what I said. xD

Got it!

Haku was played by the guy that voices Richie on Static Shock! At first I thought it was the voice of Ken from Digimon Season 2, but then it hit me.

Am I right?

And was the Frog Tom Kenny, cause it sounded like him?

I think you are right. He also does Chester from FairlyOdd Parents :p I thought that was weird when I realized it last Saturday. xD

To be honest, before Toonami announced this Month of Miazaki thing, I never heard of any of the movies before...My GOD am I glad Toonami decided to show it.

Now normally, I must admit, I'm usually not really into this sort of movie. But Spirited Away was just incredible. The story, characters, character development, everything was as close to flawless as one can hope to get in a movie such as this one. I just loved basically everything about it. The relationship between Chihiro and Haku was very well-done and cute to say the least, and Haku turning into a dragon was very cool (plus, the transformation was incredible). Overall, this was amazing. I was greatly impressed by Spirited Away, and am looking forward to the rest of the Month of Miazaki, especially Princess Mononoke...

...But was Haku REALLY voiced by the same guy who voiced Chester in The Fairly Oddparents? Man, I never would've guessed that...

Evan, you watch Fairly OddParents?! o_O!!!!

Anyways, it was a good movie. After I watched it, I went and bought it the next day! Not only for me, but for my nieces, too, because they liked it, too! And they're only 6 years old!

BTW, the guy who voiced Haku is named Jason Marsden. Not only does he do Chester and Haku, he also does Chase Young for Xiaolin Showdown. And the girl who voiced Chihiro is named Daveigh Chase, the voice of Lilo in Lilo and Stitch!

For all of you who are hearing about Miazaki for the firt time on Toonami, there are MANY more movies by him. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nasuka of the Vally of the Wind, and Castle in the Sky are the only ones being shown here, but there's also My Neighbor Totoro (meant for younger audiences, but cute all the same), Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle (Billy Cristal does the voice of Calcifer in that), Porco Rosso, and I think there's another but I cant remember the title. If you enjoy the ones on Toonami, check out some of the other ones.

wait princess mononoke is tv-14 and its on at like 7:30 are we gonna get soccer moms complaints you betcha!

Probably, I wonder if it'll be edited? I hope not. If it is, check out the uneddeted version, I dont know if it is or not, and if it is how much, but if you like the story you should experiance it the way it was meant to be.

I plan to watch the other movies in this month of Miyazaki, except for Princess Mononoke. From what I heard in the commercials, the story line sounds interesting, but too much violence and killing for my taste.

I can see your point there, if you want, I can tell you what happens. I can't imagen that you'd get all there is to it from the commercials. It's a good story.

Umm, Miyazaki movies are aired under a strict no editing rule, so do expect it uncut.

Very true, theres a rumor that he sent over a note to Disney that said, in kanji, "No cuts."

Princess Mononoke is my favorite anime movie of all time. I find it funny that Billy Bob Thorton did the voice of the monk in the movie. Its much more serious than Spirited Away, but still has its funny moments.

shove it up ya bum!
Apart from the first Pokemon movie and half of a crappy Dragonball Z movie the only Anime movies I've ever seen are Spirited Away and Kikis' Delivery Service. Kikis' was good but Spirited Away was excellent, I bought on DVD, I love Haku.

No it shouldn't. Howl's Moving Castle wasn't one of Miyazaki's best by a long shot, and Wallace & Grommit was a great movie that deserved to win.
