There's no way to say. Most likely the "best" guitarists are unknown to the general public. However, guitarists such as Jimmy Paige, Matthew Bellamy, Slash, and Jonny Greenwood are extremely overrated in my opinion. Heck, I didn't even expect to see Jonny mentioned in this thread because he's absolutely nowhere near the "best" of even the known guitarists.

Bottomline is that it's probably impossible to know because the "best" could be changing everyday. The "best" could be someone who is completely unknown. One shouldn't rank someone as the "Best Guitarist" just because they're part of their favorite band.

I think the question here should be "What makes a person the best guitarist?"

its OPINION. i like jimi hendrix and jimmy paige.
Obviously it's an opinion, but what factors cause you to choice one guitarist over another?

Speed? Knowledge of music theory? Number of albums sold? Number of hit songs? Complexity of songs? Dynamics in a song? Effects used? Playing style? Whether they were taught or self taught?

There are hundreds of factors that could/should go into it.
