Trading between first Gen Japan and Europe games?

I just bought a Pokémon Green game from Japan, and I have a PAL Pokémon Yellow, and I'm wondering if I can trade between them, or if I need it to be Japanese as well.

I believe Gen 1 and 2 games can't trade among international games. Gen 3 can but not too many people knew about this fact and fron Gen 4 on you can trade with literally anyone no matter what copy of the games they had are.
