hey
im storing some event pokemon - arceus and pichu - for a friend on my pearl game, until they get HG on friday.
my concern is, it was from a dodgy ebay platinum - freezing at certain points.
is there any risk to my pearl game?
i doubt that there is, i just want to make sure

thanks

sorry if this is the wrong place

A game should not freeze at "certain points" for any reason at all. There is some lag at Platinum in ONE of the towns because of where it's located in the ROM (at least according to bulbapedia), but that's it.

OP, there's a distinct possibility that your copy of Platinum is a boot leg. You should verify it's legitimacy. Not all boot legs are equal, so there's no sure fire way to tell, but Pokemon games are common for boot leggers.

All Pokemon games (or Nintendo released games) have an identifying number on the back of the cartridge. Other signs of it possibly being a bootleg is freezing, losing your save file or problems/refusal to save, and in 4th gen games, can't connect to other games to trade or battle and the inability to use Pal Park.

Never buy a used Pokemon game online. Only buy from sellers with retail locations that have a good return policy.

For the most part, I've heard bootlegs aren't able to trade to other games. You can try, but I wouldn't recommend it. I know I wouldn't risk my save file.

Probably not. the same thing happenned to me sorta. my platinum game worked just fine until hearthome and then it froze every time a wild pokemon appearred or i went into battle. even after this started i still trade to my diamond game and there aren't any problems at all in diamond

If it can trade, there's a good chance everything is ok. I've had my hands on two fake DS Pokemon games, neither could trade and they both spent about five minutes saving.

New games aren't exempt from this. I bought copies of Pearl and Platinum new online only to get fakes. Oddly my Fire Red, Diamond, and the Pearl I bought for a friend were all used and bought online and all work perfectly.

Of course, but it's much easier to find retail locations selling any of the 4th gen games still in their original packaging than it is to find GBA games in a similar state. I think the last time I saw a GBA Pokemon game, new, in a retail outlet was during the TRU Darkrai event in...2007? And they only had one, Pokemon Ruby.

I think this thread has answered my question, too. I'm the other way around. I have legit Diamond/pearl and tried to pal park from some GBA games I got off of ebay. Every time I tried, no pal park option came up, and when I went back to my GBA game, it was erased and said something about a curupt file, I thought it was because internationals couldn't pal park, but it could be this, too.

Seeing this thread had served its original purpose nearly a month ago and got revivied now... I don't really see why discussion should continue besides 'oh this makes sense to me' or 'I heard about this problem' seeing the question/s were already answered, so I'll just close.
