It's not compatible with the engine. The game is built for GB/GBC. Therefore, to trade using that game, only a GB/GBC link will work.

You tried the GameBoy Advance cable and the GameBoy color cable and neither worked?

Wait...have you beaten Morty and gone to the Pokemon center yet?
