Tragedy

Diamond

Thunder Trainer
Yesterday, I was looking through some of my old games and came across my old pride and joy--Pokémon Gold, in which I had all 251 Pokémon (No Gameshark). I popped it in my GBA to fool around in it, and my heary sank when I came to see these options:

NEW GAME
OPTION

My thoughts:

".........................................
...............................
...............................................
......................"

*pinch*

"................................."

*gasp*"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

All of my hard-earned data, was gone! All of it! As if nothing existed!

After turning the game off and on about 6 times, I asked my friend (who came over later that day for something unrelated) about it...

I was told that it could've been the battery, and after not using it for a long time, it died, and with it, went the data.

Considering the fact that I haven't played it in a few months, and probably a year prior to that, it seemed to make sense.

Still though, I'm going to pose a few questions to you guys:

Is my friend right?
Can this happen with all cartridge-based games?
How long does this battery last approximately?
Can the battery be charged by just...playing the game?
How long does it take to charge?

Alright, that's it for my dilemma, Thanks in advance!

Im sure someone erased your game, I dug up my silver a few days ago and it was just fine. I dont think games can die from old age.

I blame you
The internal battery is dead. (that's what someone told me when that happened to me.)

Yes, since Gold and Silver used a clock system, it needed an internal battery. They die after a while, and you lose all your data. You are then unable to save your games again until you replace the battery, but there's no way you'll be able to get your old data back. EVERY copy of Gold/ Silver/ Crystal WILL eventually and inevitably run out of battery power, and you WILL lose your data.

let us give a moment of silence for all the gold/silver/crystal games that will all eventually die.

Doesn't that mean that R/S/E games will act in the same fashion? In addition, don't all cartridge based games need a battery for data storage? Does playing the game charge it?

When the internal battery on the newer games runs out, the game loses all time-based functions (all clocks stop etc.), but you can still play and save. You can not recharge the battery, and it is virtually impossible to replace for RSE/FRLG, let along GSC. Try talking to your local GameStop, but I doubt they will be able to help. :(
Alas, it is the one major flaw of modern games.

Erk, well that clears some things up...You'd think that they'd clear something up as major as that..Will it be rectified in the 4th gen games?

This same thing happened to my Silver version. It is a real tragedy that I (and all of you as well) cannot (or soon will not be able to) save our games anymore! One question. Can you still trade pokemon from games that will lose save data?

Probably not, because the game requires you to save in order to trade.

Probably not. It requires an even more extensive time feature (the different times of day and the Pokechi clock), so unless DS Games use something different, which I doubt highly, then no. Actually, all games have internal batteries, it's just usually less apparent.

The time it takes for it to run out differs on how much you played the game and other factors. Also, unless Diamond has siblings that take his or her things and do stuff with them, then it probably couldn't have been erased. ALSO, since he/she says that he/she was lookng through some of his/her old games suggests that they probably weren't touched for a prolonged amount of time. Of course, these are only my speculations; why don't you ask Diamond?

The battery died. The time they last seems to vary between each individual battery, but they all die eventually without the Gameboy to give them a power-boost. I found my old Blue version dead a few weeks ago, but my Red version was just fine. I haven't checked my GSC games yet, but I checked one of them a few months ago and it was fine. You really have to play GBA games A LOT for the batteries to run out. The internal batteries on all of my GBA games are as lively as ever. I suspect some people just get dud batteries since there's not much of a way for them to check how long each individual one will last.

Wow, thats wierd because a few days ago I dug out Gold and had no file on it. I thought then that I must have just deleted it a long time ago, but I guess thats what happened to mine too. All good things must come to an end, apparently D:

O_O; I didn't even know that could happen. >_>;; That really sucks. -___-;;

...

crap, Totie (my Feraligatr) is in my Pokemon Gold game! D: I gotta go check on him soon! Not to mention Team Gold. :<

I never told my stepbrother what happened to his Silver game (deleted), he stills thinks they're fine.

Frost Nova

The predator awaits.
Same thing happened to me: got everything erased on my Gold, which I haven't touched since 2002........too bad really.

D/P use DS internal clock (like Animal Crossing), so it won`t have this problem.

Alas, with G/S/C when its internal battery dies it takes all your game data. It has a lifespan of between 5-10 years.

That isn't the case with R/S/E's internal battery though. When that dies you just won't be able to plant berries and your game data is still safe.
