Call me Robert guys
Hey guys, so I recently came back to this series and found that another episode was released. This is part 4 of a 12 part series.

Here are all the videos in order by part:

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6p5AZp7r_Q
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toa_vH6xGqs
Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjImnqH_KwM
Part 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYqYLfm1rWA

Also you can go here for more info if you are new to the series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropes_vs._Women_in_Video_Games

So what do you guys think of the series?? I personally agree with a lot of what she says and have really had my eyes opened to how women have been treated in video games.

Anyways, have fun and enjoy the discussion guys, however, please be at least decent towards each other and please follow the rules of the forum.

Enjoy :)!!

Not watching all that, but it comes down to a few simple things.

Videogames are most often made by males, for males.
Since the main audience is males, having a male main character makes the most sense, because the majority of people are more comfortable playing a character of their own gender (more relatable).
Having 1-dimensional female characters is a cause of either lazy writing/design, or the lack of talent to create something more interesting (it's easier for most artists to create characters of their own gender, and most people in the industry are males). Again, it also leads back to the fact that most video-games are aimed towards a young (between age 10-20), male audience, who are fine with 1-dimensional characters. If they get to save a sweet-looking girl from the big bad evil, then that's good enough for them, so why would the developer bother doing more than just that?
It all comes down to this: As long as developers are not rewarded for creating female characters that are equal to male characters, this "problem" (if you see it as one) will continue to exist. As soon as enough people start mass-buying the few games that have worthy, equal female characters, things will change.

But if you can't wait for that change, the next best thing would be to create your own games that fairly represent females. Making a video series to inform people and to complain about the gender inequalities is nice and all, but in the end, it doesn't change anything.

edit: As for myself, as one who's been working with RPG Maker, I admit being guilty for using a female character as a plot device in my first game. But I'm going to do better in my next games when it comes to representing the female characters. They'll have their own personalities, wants, likes, hopes and dreams, just like the male characters do. In combat they'll be just as powerful and useful as the male characters, and they won't be used as kidnapping bait for the big bad evil.
