The vaccine protects you 70% more from variants if I remember right, which if everyone had would drastically reduce numbers.

Things like the plague and TB are still around today, but a huge part of why they aren’t as big is because people aren’t spreading it around and we have herd immunity.

But don’t treat it like the vaccine is just some little help, it’s actually a literal miracle considering how well it works and how little time it took to come up.

closer to 90%, actually, for pfizer at least (modern is similar, so probably the same figure).

A study based on real-world data from the U.K. found that two doses of the Pfizer vaccine were 88% effective at preventing COVID-19 as a result of an infection with the Delta variant. That’s just a notch down from the 95% efficacy it demonstrated in clinical trials against earlier, less transmissible strains.

And herd immunity is based on three factors: efficacy, population vaccinated (or otherwise unsuspectible), and transmissiblity. The fact COVID is highly transmissible, and newer variants like beta and delta make it more transmissible, basically means the longer we take the vaccinate, the more likely herd immunity is impossible. I suspect the Biden Administration has already given up on herd immunity, and is looking at an 'COVID is an endemic disease' exit strategy, because we aren't vaccinating people faster than the virus mutates.

One fun side effect of not enough people getting vaccinated is those who did get vaccinated will need extra booster shots to keep up after a year or so, making it even more selfish for those who refuse to get a free vaccination.

I’m sure they would be pushed anyway, but it makes it more necessary to not make things worse again.

Also that’s true for above, I forgot it was already good and proven to be even more effective than expected, but not perfect. It’s another one of those “science comes out and proves again and again that the vaccines work, but dumb people need to wait for reasons they can only vaguely describe”

"In Paris, demonstrators clashed with police after French President Emmanuel Macron announced sweeping measures to fight the pandemic earlier this week. He mandated vaccinations for all health-care workers and said new rules would require unvaccinated people to show negative coronavirus tests before entering bars, restaurants and other entertainment venues.
Also this week, Greek authorities said all medical workers would need to be immunized or face penalties, and only vaccinated individuals would be allowed to use public indoor spaces until Aug. 31, through the height of Greece’s tourism season. The policies prompted demonstrations in Athens, where thousands gathered outside parliament Wednesday under heavy police presence, Reuters reported."

It's called people having trouble being told "no", regardless of the context.

It isn't hard to realize that people will cut off their nose to spite their face. Plus the weird concept people have where it's freedom from all restrictions and responsibilities in life instead of working together for a social good.

Being against the COVID vaccine (and masks, etc.) is now basically an identity, membership in a movement against the evil elites who drink children’s blood or whatever crackpot garbage is all the rage these days. This increases the social and personal costs of changing that belief immensely.

Yes it is entirely a political issue at this point. Going anti mask is just flashing gang signs now.

More of that here

Cancun Cruz attacking Texas Democrats for fleeing the state.

Hilariously, he's claiming the Texas Constitution give "clear legal authority" for them to arrest the Texas Democrats and force them back into quorum, but the Constitution does not actually provide such authority and Texas state troopers don't have jurisdiction outside of the state.

What is the difference between social liberalism and social democracy
Social liberalism's defintion is relative to every culture.

Social democracy is just the government controlling the economy more and helping poor people so there's greater wealth equality. This is usually if the form of greater social safety nets through higher taxes. Its criticisms range from not doing enough to tackle the issues created by capitalism because it works within the capitalist framework to its unable to handle high tax burdens in situations of decreasing taxable individuals to poor immigrants.

Pfizer date for vaccine approval is Jan

“Pfizer Inc. PFE said Friday that the Food and Drug Administration accepted its application for full approval of the COVID-19 vaccine it developed with BioNTech SEBNTX . As part of the application process, the FDA sets a decision date based on the rules of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act for applications that receive what is called Priority Review. The decision date is set for an undisclosed day in January, Pfizer said. This means that Pfizer's COVID-19 shot may not be fully approved in the U.S. until then, though the decision could occur sooner.”

Fox News does a sudden 180 regarding how the COVID vaccine is important...

...to recover from this:

Lives are priceless, but they are worthless against the all powerful $1.

Then again, Fox was always stupidly weird:

In other news, Twitter is starting to get enough of MTG that it has banned, uh, "canceled" her account for 12 hours.

It took Trump to call to overthrow the government, and Alex Jones to come up and harass the Twitter CEO to his face to get banned. They won't pull the trigger unless they really have to.

Nick Fuentes finally got banned after not even hiding his language.

Yeah technically that is misinformation. She should of said “less dangerous” I suppose to people under that age or don’t have any underlying health conditions. Considering more healthy young people turn out okay after having COVID. That being said that isn’t the case for everyone and there are anomalies for every situation so to say it’s non dangerous for everyone that meets that criteria is just factually inept. I think she’s entitled to discuss a vaccine mandate but at least have all your point together and make sure they’re factually sound.

It really boggles my mind how anyone can defend the Republicans at this point. It's blatantly obvious that they don't care about anyone but wealthy elites (and old, white male Christian wealthy elites at that), between their unashamed support for radical right wing extremists, their push to distrust medical professionals and not get vaccinated (and surprise, surprise, they only 180'd when it hurt the economy for the 1%ers), and their attempts to create a 2nd Jim Crow era in corrupt voting laws (not to mention, that they vehemently struck down the For the People Act which included voting reform measures that would actually improve elections such as restrictions on money in politics, gerrymandering, and voter intimidation). I honestly don't know how the Republicans can possibly convince people to re-elect them in 2022 and beyond, there is no floor when it comes to the depths that they would stoop to.
