Unfair Anime Battling Rules?

Horn Drill

ヘタリア!
First of all, I'd like to say that the whole "Pokemon Battle Judge" thing they do in the anime nowadays is completely pointless. They have to have Brock or some other doofus tell us what Pokemon is knocked out or who won the battle in EVERY STINKING BATTLE that isn't against Team Rocket. It gets annoying after a while. They didn't have this little rule about battles in the olden days. I could understand having a judge at the Pokemon Leauge or something, but two kids out in a field don't need some guy to tell them when Tailow beat Zigzagoon or something. It's stupid, and it takes up time. >_<

Another little peeve I have about the Pokemon judges is how some of their rules are unfair. Remember waaaaay back when Ash lost to Richie in the Indigo Tournament? Richie's Butterfree knocked out Ash's Squirtle by using Sleep Powder. The judge disqualified Squirtle just because it feel asleep. ._.; In a way, this makes some sense, but in many others it's unfair and leaves a lot of plotholes. Squirtle (or any sleeping Pokemon) was unable to battle because it was snoozing, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't have just woken up a few turns later and got right back to fighting. Squirtle had plenty of energy left and would have been fine after it woke up. If the sleep = KO rule was actually true, then stuff like Butterfree, Hypno, and Parasect would be ubers.

This might just sound like a rant or something, but I hope you can see where I'm coming from. It's just another thing on the huge pile of anime plotholes. It fits right in there next to "AIM 4 T3H HORN!1" >___<;;

I see your point. I agree with you for the most part. But then again, maybe they do not really know when their Pokemon is knocked. Maybe those squiggly eyes are there for us, but not really present in the show (if the show was real). Like on game shows they give us the answer beforehand, but only too those who are watching it. However, that is unfair that Squirtle got disqualified just because he fell asleep. Especially since Flannary put one of Ash's Pokemon to sleep and it eventually (<key word) woke up.

It's also funny how Ash's pokemon can get hit so many times and still win the battle after one or two attacks like when Ash battled this kid's Furret for the Silver Conference and Nolan. When Ash battled the Furret, Pikachu suffered about seven dig attacks (which is his weakness) and then won after one thunderbolt. When he battled Nolan, Charizard got hit several times by water pulse and ice beam but then won with a seismic toss.

No to mention the pokemon he was battling was resistant to that particular attack

thats because ash's pokemon have to be uberfied to the point that they could survive a direct hit from the Atomic bomb and keep on dishing out hits

I heard that one! :p

Random Note: ZOMGZ! We have t3h same avatars!

On topic: Well, yeah. The anime is just inconsistent like that. I do agree that the judges suck however, and have their very own *special* ways of pointing out the obvious. The sleep thing though.....o_O...Maybe they have a grudge against lazy Pokemon? >___<;;

And people, do not make fun of the Master's Pokemon. All hail 00ber Ash! ALL HAIL! *Tries to kill Pikachu with 7 atomic bombs, but Pikachu survives without a scratch*

Oh...crap....*runs*

It's an inconsistent kid's show. Deal with it. :p

Well all the judges were at a Snorlax convention and well.. you get the point >_>! And yes its strange about that heck not even lugia would win over pikachu it seems! Lol! So yes the judges are strange!

I don't see why they couldn't introduce a ten count. That way it would be more fair. And sleep, I think it kind of suck they immedately call it a knock out. That makes Sleep Powder as effective as Horn Drill.

I say that it's some sad attempt to give Takeshi something to do. But even that fails, considering we saw Satoshi judge a battle or two (and I'm pretty sure Haruka and Masato can be just as capable... aside from being unnecessary, judges don't seem like they have a very complicated task, despite one Houen filler making it look that way).

Anyway, with Japanese episodes of the first series fresh in my mind, I noticed that there were a number of times when Satoshi would battle a trainer, and apparently, it's 2 on 1. IOW, the opposing trainer knocks out one of Satoshi's Pokemon, Satoshi sends out someone else, and all he does is knock out the opponent's single Pokemon, then he's declared the victor (even when we can be pretty sure that wasn't the opposition's only Pokemon on hand).

One noteable example of this was his battle against Saizou before the Sekiei tournament. Now, it's pretty much guaranteed that Saizou had more Pokemon than his Garagara. Not only because it's extremely difficult to imagine him collecting 8 badges with a single Pokemon (especially not one that Satoshi could beat with just two of his), but also because he clearly uses a Dodo later in the episode. In spite of this, Saizou only used Garagara, which KOed Satoshi's Fushigidane before getting its a** kicked by Pikachu. So Satoshi used two Pokemon, Saizou used one, but Satoshi's the victor anyway. Talk about one-sided, de gozaru.

I've heard that example already. Are there any other instances like that?

I remember that episode. Do any of you remember the one with the Bridge Bike Gang? Ash used Bulbasaur and Charmander to beat that one guy's Golem, but then Misty could only use her Psyduck to fight that other girl's Cloyster. o_O

I have never had a problem with that one, or "Electric Armor". Same for several other people.

And I agree, the judges really don't do much.

Yes, but remember in the olden days you weren't allow to substitute Pokemon. A recalled Pokemon was classed as a Knockout in those days. So maybe the judge thought it would have been unfair to let Squirtle take a beating and not be able to fight back.
