I rescently came upon the information that there are two ways to play the game: unlimited or modified...what does this refer to? Its been a while since I last played and so much has changed...

In Unlimited format, you can use any legal cards from Base Set on up to all of the newer ex sets.

Modified format is when you can only use the most recent sets, and is updated/rotated every year. The current Modified format is the Hidden Legends set and newer, and all POP (Pokemon Organized Play) sanctioned tournaments (examples of these would be the City Championships, States, all the way up to Worlds) must use this format. You can also use any cards that have been reprinted in HL and up, but you must play the card by the most recent version's text.

"Showtime!"
Hmm, tough call on my half.

Honestly though, I think Modified>Unlimited as in the case of a balanced format.

On the other hand if you like to be cheap then Unlimited> Modified.

Sometimes I wish they had just kept it at RS-On. It was soo balanced and still gave all players an extra advantage back then. Now if they get rid of EX: Emerald at the next rotation (After the incomming one after worlds 06-07), then we are royaly S.O.L.

I always preferred Modified.

But just for future reference...where can I find a list of illegal Unlimited cards?

When I said "legal," all actual English-released cards are legal in Unlimited for the most part. Illegal ones would be the jumbo cards, Japanese cards that were not released in English, obviously illegal stuff. XD

I know both Ancient Mew and Birthday Pikachu were illegal at points in time, though I don't remember if they're legal now.
