One of the things I wished GameFreak would do is to embrace Red as a character, for starters. Have him speak, tell the player what he's been doing all these years outside of training in a mountain somewhere. The "..." joke is honestly getting pretty old and here's the thing. One of the things I like about the Let's Go games is that we actually get to see some interesting character development from the other two main Gen 1 characters, Green Oak becoming a Gym Leader and Blue having a connection to Mewtwo. Those are really interesting developments as short as it was and then there's Red who is just "...". Ask almost every fan, he is the least-favorite out of the three in the Let's Go cameos because he doesn't really add anything. I wish they stopped embracing him as "he's supposed to be the player" and more his own character.I've never cared for Game!Red. Its cool that you got to battle him on top of Mt.Silver, but I hate how the series tries to paint him as this legendary trainer, despite him not being all that much when compared to the other protagonists. I'd think May/Brenden taming Rayqauza, riding it to space to battle Deoxys to save the entire world would make someone even more of a legend. Or maybe Dawn/Lucas willing following Cynthia and Cyrus into the Distortion world and having to battle Giratina. Or how about Elio/Selene riding a Legendary to another dimension to fight Ultra Necrozma, which im pretty sure was being worshipped as a god? Not too mention that Ethan/Kris/Lyra had to deal with what was left of Team Rocket in Johto, and if that whole time hopping plot with Celebi is canon then they also defeated Giovanni and disbanded Team Rocket for good.
I think customization helps in the personality department since you can choose how your character looks. In general I think the player character needs a bit more opportunity to have some personality. Particularly in Sword and Shield compared to some of your more interesting opponents you feel a bit bland.

Or do like BOTW Link and find a sorta middle ground, where you do play as a sorta "silent" protagonist, but they give you dialogue options in response to other NPCs that still give you some semblance of character, like sass for instance. And who could forget the legendary "I am he."?I generally dislike the whole silent protagonist bit, so I'd love it if future games would allow us to choose from more pre-programmed dialogue so that we could at least have interesting conversations with other important characters in the games.

GearChange said:Remember Cissy and Danny from the Orange Islands? The first two gym leaders that Ash faced? Those two really shouldn't be gym leaders. First of all Cissy will only face you if you have a Water-Type. The type is abundant, yeah, but not everyone has a water-type on them and I doubt everyone's gonna want to catch an extra pokemon, train it up and then use it for just one gym.
Then you have Danny, who wants you to climb a mountain without the aide of a Pokemon? Why? Aren't gym battles suppose to test the bond you have with said Pokemon? Dunno what mountain climbing has to do with that, unless he's trying to see if you have the guts or something. And lets not forget that he, too, requires that you have pokemon with specific skills. Freezing water from a geyser and then cutting it into a sled. What happens if you lack anything ice related? He gonna freeze it for you? Or what if you have an ice-type move but no way to cut the ice? Also not everyone can just casually climb mountains, especially not the way Ash did it. If you have leg problems and wanan take on the Orange Crew, you're out of luck.
Rudy's alright, just a test of skill and then a battle. Luana just wants a double battle and Drake's a full 6-on-6. But Cissy and Danny? I feel sorry for type-specialists who wants to take on this league.
Honestly, I feel like Sword and Shield improves a bit on the previous games in that aspect. From the times you are prompted with options to speak, some of the things that you can say are pretty sassy. For example, in one of the instances where Hop challenges you to a battle, your options are the typical yes and “But why?”. When you select the latter, Hop says something to the effect of “Seriously? This is the moment when you play along and act pumped up for battle!”.In general I think the player character needs a bit more opportunity to have some personality. Particularly in Sword and Shield compared to some of your more interesting opponents you feel a bit bland.

You can bet that I chose the sassy dialogue options every time they were available. I hope they do expand on options further in future games.
Definitely not unpopular. They should be thrown down a volcano.Another unrelated unpopular opinion- the Police officers in Sword and Shield are terrifying.
They remind me of Cilan when he was on a train way back thenDefinitely not unpopular. They should be thrown down a volcano.
Not a fan of TRs. They seem like a huge step back and a way to artificially lengthen Sword and Shield, by making people fight in raid battles to earn them.
Fair point on that one, since it seems as if running into them is a combination of rng and luck.I don't mind them as a concept but making some of them specific to rare Max battles is where i find it tiresome.
