we can't say for sure because Axew was better against Cynthia's Garchomp than Paul's Torterra was

you need to answer the Axew conundrum
Not to mention explicitly ignoring the fact that what Axew did wasn't anywhere remotely close to being as impressive or even comparable to what Ash-Greninja did against Mega Gardevoir. All Axew did was just land one hit whilst otherwise getting terribly outclassed by Garchomp otherwise, and even after that Garchomp was up and about to finish off Axew instantly when Cynthia stopped Garchomp from landing the attack as she was concerned about Axew getting hurt, and that is somehow even comparable to what Ash-Greninja did against Mega Gardevoir.

Apparently it goes above a 'certain someone's head here that the definition of going toe to with someone = repeatedly matching your opponent's attacks, matching your opponent in combat, matching your opponent in speed and agility, landing multiple damage inducing hits. Axew did none of those. Ash-Greninja literally did all of these things against Mega Gardevoir, even outspeeding and overpowering Gardevoir multiple times and landing far more hard and damage inducing hits than Axew literally ever did. And the end, sheerly outclassing and overpowering Gardevoir in the last clash, when Gardevoir was using one of its strongest moves.

And still that 'certain someone' here decides to compare Axew's performance against Garchomp to Ash-Greninja's performance against Mega Gardevoir, which is just hilariously flawed and nonsensical, because when we are comparing a far inferior performance to a far superior one, and proceed to say that they are similar cases, unfinished sparring sessions, and thus those shouldn't be taken that seriously to determine a Pokemon's strength, then the statement is flawed and nonsensical in the first place, because we are comparing something far superior to something far inferior, which doesn't not make any sense whatsoever.

This is mainly I actually didn't attempt to debate this point further with that 'certain someone' because he just literally can't accept something even when it's pretty clear that he is mistaken.
