Vespinia: The Eye of Amatis

Wordy

#FlorrieSlayage2014
Year 2099. The legendary Emperor Amatis perished today at the hands of a quartet of brave heroes. As of his vanquishing, the rebel militia, the Vespinian Honorius, came into power, with its leader, the reverent Keiko Fumigo, now assuming the lead position as High Queen of the Vespa states. A future of peace and wealth is assured…

Legends speak of Emperor Amatis, who was once dictator of the Vespinian states. A man of unfathomable power, he apparently once drained all the power from the core of a nuclear reactor into his cybernetic right arm, gifting him with incredible strength and intelligence- at the cost of his eyes. They were soon replaced with enhancements taken from a scrapped android and boosted to incredible strength by their nuclear power source.

Unopposed due to his massive powers, he assumed control of the country and drastically changed the way the modern world worked- for although he was despotic and prone to violent outbursts, killing multiple advisors, he also promoted new medicines, fuel sources and ways to create more efficient technology, resulting in the creation of the Star A android.

Behind the scenes, however, a group of resistance fighters were plotting his demise. Known only as the Vespinian Honorius, their leader, Keiko Fumigo, made a public announcement over ancient radio technology (and also the only technology available to those in the slums) that the Emperor would soon be dethroned. A siege on the Glass Palace failed, so Keiko hired the four bravest mercenaries in the surrounding states to do dispose of the Emperor once and for all.

These mercenaries were far more experienced than the former farmers who made up the resistance force, and all survived a confrontation with the Emperor himself. Armed with only their wits and their courage, the four managed to work together perfectly, and their teamwork was what put an end to the sole force opposing them.

The lesser ranked of the mercenaries was one Sagacious Meritt, from the Virgini Islands. Ranked #4 in the world, he was famed for his trophies. The trophy Sagacious took in this case was Amatis’s eyes, which, made of powerful cybernetics as they were, had eventually drained the much less-advanced arm of the nuclear energy, leaving it useless. One of the eyes he kept for himself, the other he gave to the Virgini Islands’ Head Protectorate, as part of his deal with them in order to go to the aid of the Vespinians.

Keiko assumed leadership of the country, and named herself High Queen. Unknown to Sagacious, Keiko was in fact a keen scientist who planned on studying the eyes in order to drain their nuclear energy for her own ends. Upon discovery of the eyeless sockets, she immediately summoned up her new Royal Guard and commanded them to partake in an assassination attempt, and retrieve the eyes. The assassination succeeded, but both the eyes had seemingly disappeared.

Having given up on her plans for conquering the surrounding islands, Keiko first made up a Secret Police (the Federal Integrity Corps) and then turned the social system on its head, first brutally executing Amatis’s most senior advisors, and making her compatriots into the social elite, bestowing upon them unbelievable riches and pleasures.

And what became of the other eye? It now resided in the state of Euparagii’s capital, Masarin- the City of Iron. The City of Iron prospered in the trade of android making during the 22nd century, and their power cores were able to survive for on average thirty years longer in the city than anywhere else in the Vespinian States.

And Masarin is where the story starts…

--------
The Federal Integrity Corps Science Division has finally been able to pinpoint the location of the Second Eye of Amatis to Masarin, but at this time have managed to get no further. A specially selected squad of operatives has been selected to make the drop into Masarin, and question the locals in order to locate the Eye. The FIC’s projected time of discovery is December 31st, 2197- five days from the current date.

The FIC will face opposition. Mercenaries have managed to utilize underhanded techniques in order to locate the Eye, and have also managed to touchdown in the City of Iron, where they too are searching for data.

Trapped in the middle are citizens of Masarin- although they may not be as simply-motivated as they may first appear. All will eventually have to make a choice- do they go for the ransom and retrieve the eye for the FIC, or work together with the mercenaries in order to serve revenge up to those who represent the authority that has suppressed them for so long? Alternatively, citizens may work solo for reasons of their own- or the eye may simply be of no value to them at all.

The choice is yours.

Glossary:

Amatis-
Legendary emperor of the Vespinian states. His methodology was cruel, but his intent seemingly just, as the advances made in medicine and citizen healthcare were not insignificant- even if being around him dropped your lifespan by around forty years.

Android- Specialized humanoid automatons created by expert human engineers. Androids can do any job, no matter how dangerous, and do not demand pay. Most are remote-controlled and do not have their own ‘minds’, but some of the C-Rank and most of the B-Ranked androids have their own consciousness and conversational ability. Androids are currently fuelled either by solar cells or power cores, although the eye of Amatis, and its powerful nuclear tech, would be able to power an android for a lifetime. Androids are ‘ranked’ from S (Emperor Rank) to E (Pale facsimiles and shambling zombies). Due to the current times, only B to E rank androids are currently operational. B ranks have the most combat ability and highest AI level.

The Capital (City of Glass)- The city whose name was lost to time, this city is the home of the ruling classes and the elite. Physically beautiful, The Capital’s nickname was earned from its physical appearance- all of its buildings are made from a strange, impervious crystal-like transparent alloy that refracts the light. The centrepiece of the Capital is the Palace of Glass and the Fountain of the Created Ones.

The Dead Well- Located in the outskirts of Masarin, this well contains a fabled ‘monster’ which eats all that venture near. The Dead Well is in fact a hiding place for one of the last nuclear reactors on the planet. Hidden from human eyes for so long, if this fell into the wrong hands it would bestow much more power than the Eyes of Amatis combined.

Eyes of Amatis- Two artefacts of incredible power, both of these cybernetic eyes contain enough nuclear power between them to power three whole armies of androids permanently. The Eyes are the most desired objects on the Earth. One is in the possession of the Head Protectorate of the Virgini Islands, the other is hidden somewhere in the City of Iron. Joined together, they also have a secret ability.

The Federal Integrity Corps- The FIC is the secret police force of the High Queen. The Federal Integrity Corps live to serve the Queen, and carry out her wishes at a moment’s notice. Fiercely loyal, they crush all attempts at rebellion, and make no attempts to disguise the terrible fate that awaits those who choose to disobey. The FIC Academy accepts youngsters at age 18, and they finish training at 21. Having chosen their specialist weapon in their penultimate year at the Academy, they have a somewhat symbiotic relationship with their weaponry that confuses outsiders, being able to control it as if it were simply an extension of their own body. The FIC has a rigorous selection progress and most ‘weaklings’ are rooted out by the end of Year One at the Academy. Due to the secrets learned, nobody knows what happens to the 18-19 year olds who are deemed not worthy. Some suspect mind wipes, others suspect much worse. Standard uniform is plainclothes. Many of the city’s elite choose to send their children here.

Four Mercenaries- The quartet of heroes hired by Keiko Fumigo. All four were assassinated at some point after the defeat of Amatis, leaving their family members wanting revenge. They were the four highest-ranked mercenaries in the world, and their motives are still unknown for cooperating with Keiko, considering Amatis’ high wealth. Many consider the Four Mercenaries to have ‘lost their independence,’ with their specialized teamwork. Their names were Serena Kerkiliv (1st), Jupiter Aligmn (2nd), Mertis O’Ryans (3rd) and Sagacious Meritt (4th).

Human- The most powerful species on the planet. Humans vary in career and social standing, and no two are identical.

Keiko Fumigo, The High Queen- Former leader of the Vespinian Honorius, Keiko is now High Queen of the Vespinian states. Despite being well into her 14th decade of life, Keiko remains as decadent and elegant as a century ago. The secrets to her long life have not been widely discussed, but it is suspected that her FIC Science Division have something to do with it. As part of her work as Queen, Keiko changed around the social system, and despite promises of change, things are exactly the same as they were, just reversed, with the once oppressed now top of the social ladder, and the old aristocracy living with their livestock.

Masarin (City of Iron) - Famous for its android industry, Masarin is the location of this story. A large city, Masarin’s centre piece is the Fountain of the Damned. The esteemed Kyoi family is in charge of the local order and peacekeeping. Coming inwards, the centre is very refined, whereas the outskirts are home to scum. It gains its name from the rich iron deposits to the North-West, which also make up the Clock Tower and the Iron Court.

Mercenaries- AKA Bounty Hunters. Mercenaries are guns-for-hire and out for themselves, and prefer the man with the most cash in his pocket. They will do any job (at a variable rate of pay) and are famed as some of the least predictable people on Earth. Mercenaries enjoy pitting their wits against their prey and can track a wanted man from the scent of the air and the bark on the trees.

Nuclear Power- AKA The Lost Power. Nuclear weaponry is among the most feared on the Earth, and could cause global destruction at the press of a button. As of the 22nd century, nuclear power is a fabled commodity, having been drained from most power stations during Amatis’ reign. Nuclear power could fuel an android indefinitely, but it is mostly sought after because of properties as of yet unknown.

Palace of Glass- Centrepiece of the City of Glass. Made of the same beautiful crystal, the Palace is the most secure place on the planet, due to it being the residence of the High Queen. Located within also are the Royal Court, Torture Chambers, Android Research and Grave of the Damned, some of the most important rooms in the Vespinian States.

Vespinian States- A country stretching from the East of the Asinine States to the West of the Virgini Islands. A vast country that encompasses many different environments, its inhabitants are probably the most skilful people on the planet. Its main exports are androids and iron.

Vespinian Honorius- Rebel group headed up by Keiko Fumigo. All of its members became the new elite of the country after the demise of Amatis, with most residing in the City of Glass. Only a few of Keiko’s most trusted advisors are still alive- and also over one hundred and forty years old.

Virgini Islands- Island chain located to the South-East of the Vespinian States.

Androids are civilian only, unless you can convince me with a really good SU that an android could also be a FIC/Mercenary.
