Witty Cynic
I've not been around these parts in a long time, but after seeing a few forum threads that I disagreed with I had to throw my hat into the ring. This is largely a rant with an optimistic afterthought, and it's right off the cuff so it will likely be very unorganized.
I'll first say that my girl and I have been having loads of fun with Sword and Shield, and it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but I wanted to share my thoughts and feelings of the game.
In my opinion, the story is pretty lackluster in the SW/SH games, and the characters relatively worse. The world that they created for these games is interesting, had great potential, and could have really been a true 9/10 game and not some under the table dealings [insert game rating company] "it had something for everyone" meme rank. There were some Orange Island vibes from the gym challenge system they added in which were pretty cool. It really took us back to the anime feels of a true tournament setting with fans and a hyper competitive league that the world itself actually cares about. Then they added Team Yell. How did we degenerate from crime syndicate down to emasculated rowdy fans? I thought Team Flare was bad enough, and then I REALLY had to lower my standards while playing this game. Uninteresting dialog (seemed like they really lost it on localization at some parts), lack of backstory, and bland character development really took away any glimmer of hope that the mediocre plot had to offer.
