Was Dawn's Togekiss really pointless?

I keep hearing this for some reason.

I mean sure, she got it before the GF but it still got a fair amount of screentime in the anime (and the Zoroark movie) + an episode of development before the Grand Festival. It also participated in the final battle so I really don't see how Dawn getting Togekiss was pointless. :/

Furthermore, I think Togekiss suited her really well.

What is your opinion on this?

I personally enjoyed Togekiss a lot. Ever since it was released, I hoped a main character would get one. Dawn seemed the best fit.

I think it was a good Pokemon for her team, it's just the fact on how she received it, and how late she received it.

It was quickly shafted onto her team which made it not feel so right personally.

Although, once she did have it, it worked well and suited her.

The reasons most people tout around seem to be;

-She was given a fully evolved pokemon right at the last minute, only a mere handful of episodes before the Grand Festival
-She had never used Togekiss prior to being handed it
-Princess Salvia was considered a cheap, uninspired character by some as she was essentially a "prince and pauper" version of Dawn
-There was a huge amount of hype from certain circles for years that Togekiss was a surefire excuse to bring Misty back
-There was also much speculation that the evil Togepi would return, be captured by Dawn and evolve, or that Cynthia might be involved... basically the speculation between the revelation of Togekiss and the actual capture was all more fanservice-y than what we wound up with.
-Togekiss was used in a single major battle and lost, and what's more it was a battle they'd built up the entire saga for
-People were still sore over Ambipom's ridiculous departure
-Togekiss was used to weigh in on the running gag of Gible's Draco Meteor hitting Piplup, which was a base breaking subplot
-Togekiss's personality revolved around it being a prima donna

All that said, I personally really liked Togekiss and didn't see what all the fuss was about. I've even seen it named as one of the major downsides in DP, or a jump-the-shark moment for the franchise. I think that's downright silly. She was no more cheap than Ash's last-minute Glalie, and let's not forget how powerful Gible suddenly became at the eleventh hour. She was entertaining in her time on the show, gave us a great aerial battle and showed Dawn's growth as a coordinator. I miss her more than Buneary, Pachirisu or Quilava, and they don't get the same criticism.

Oh, u mad bro?
I liked Togekiss a lot and thought it was a perfect fit for Dawn. It really gave her team that "it" factor and I felt it was the last missing piece of her team. She needed a Flyer and Togekiss fit like a glove.

I guess people just get pissy for stupid reasons here.

I actually did like Togekiss it was just the timing that hurt the thing. Personality wise Togekiss was enjoyable, it had more personality then some other female late captures which surprised me. In the long run Dawn should have got it as a Togepi early and pull a Mamoswine/Charizard and have it evolve really quickly to final form without the rebel issue. Togekiss didn't even get a contest win or appeal round. Even baby Cyndaquil got that...which by the way is another Pokemon that gets ragged on for being a late capture but at least the little guy actually earned his keep and not just stand there coming out of it's poke ball just to be showcased but never doing anything.

Still looking back, Cyndaquil was fine but for the GF they should have just had Ambipom come back as Dawn's 6th Pokemon. But I never disliked Togekiss for being a last minute entry. If anything it was Dawn's secret weapon, and how many rivals have secret weapons they unveil at these big tournaments and they lose just like Togekiss? It would only really be cheap if she won the GF with it.

I liked it but it should of come maybe 10 episodes before I think

I don't think she was pointless. She was really refreshing and brought some sweet moments to the show. Personally I enjoyed her grace, interactions with Piplup and Gible and how she's pretty much the first normal/flying pokemon to have a distinctive personality.

She was captured too late but she wasn't cheap. At the end, Dawn didn't win the Grand Festival with her and she spent a whole episode trying to understand Togekiss and training her.

I really loved her.

I don't think she was pointless, but she could have been done differently. Dawn just getting a fully-evolved Pokemon before the Grand Festival seemed a little cheap. I'm glad that she at least had a personality and that Dawn had to actually adapt to her, but if she was given to Dawn in a different way and not so close to the Grand Festival it would have been better in my opinion.

I really did like the personality they gave her though, it was something we hadn't really seen on the show before. I wish we could have seen more of her.

Maybe they just didn't want to go through the preamble of introducing a pokemon from an earlier generation and then evolving it as quickly as they could to the form they wanted to advertise. Ash's Gligar, Dawn's Swinub, Jessie's Yanma, Paul's Murkrow and Magmar, Zoey's Kirlia... we didn't see much of any of them because they needed to get to the point where they could showcase the new additions. Giving Dawn a Togepi and having it evolve out of happiness (which takes a while) and then acquire a Shiny Stone would have been pretty much a rush job either way. Just having it go to Dawn fully formed saved some unnecessary and predictable time.

As others have mentioned, its just been the timing thing with Togekiss. I absoloutely loved Togekiss as a main haracter and I'm glad Dawn received it especially because they worked together so well! It would've just been nice if she had received much sooner than she did so it could have been used more and slghtly developed more. That way it may have felt a better staple to her team than others have ended up viewing it.

Obviosuly the DP fans and Ambipom fans are quite annoyed at how she left, I must admit I was. And the fact she didn't return too! But I don't think that has to affect who Togekiss was or became. She definitely wasn't an Ambipom substitute in terms of character or personality so it added a new style to Dawn's team and a newness to the overall main cast. We can have a lot of 'if only's' about the series, but that doesn't change what happened or even the change the characters. Togekiss was a greataddition and did wonders for Dawn's growth and for the whole main ast. There was a needed freshness with her, something that we hadn't seen before!

I liked Dawn's Togekiss a lot. However, I felt that it was just sort of random and was just a fill in because they had Ambipom leave. :( Was it pointless? No not really, and it knew a lot of cool moves that helped her out in the Grand Festival. *just misses Ambipom ;-;*

There's no problem with the Pokemon, per se, just the way it ended up on Dawn's team left a bit to be desired. She and Togekiss had no interactions prior to that, but this random character of the day just decides to give it to her anyway, so it comes off as cheap.

Ultimately there wasn't any harm done, really, since it was a welcome addition to the cast. It's just one of those things that doesn't sit well with some fans.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
She got a fully evolved Togekiss handed to her literallty 2 episodes before her Grand Festival. How is that not pointless?

As a whole Togekiss got what, maybe 7 episodes of screentime? After the GF all we had were Ash episodes where it didn't appear

I think the writers might still have plans for Togekiss in the future. What would have been smart is that they could have gave her a Togetic earlier so that it could have evolved around the same time she recieved it from the princess. Lord knows that we really didn't really get to see much of Togetic. It would have been good to see it again. As far as for Togepi, no!

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
LOL, whoever got the idea of giving Dawn a fully evolved pokemon 2 episodes before her Grand Festival, and only giving it like 7 episodes of screentime overall was ridiculous.

Dawn's entire team was handled so poorly in the second half of DP.
