Was Tierno originally intended to be more of a major rival for Ash in Pokemon X&Y/XY&Z?

AuraChannelerChris

Easygoing Luxray.
Because Ash represented everything Alain wasn't. Alain battled to the point of having no passion in it; Ash battled with passion constantly. Alain pushed his friends away; Ash believed in his friends and supported them. While Ash-Greninja was the trigger that got him interested, it was Ash himself who stirred the things that Alain had repressed beneath himself. It wasn't about Ash being super strong, but about his other character traits, which is why he felt he never won against Ash.

Meaningful.

...That being said, that was such a hollow victory over Alain anyhow. Cheap, even.

Poor Tierno, even he couldn't get his Blastoise to mega evolve since that privilege was taken by Siebold. And Trevor got to mega evolve his Charizard despite seeing him battle less. And to add injury, Sawyer defeated Tierno which further reduce the latter role as a major rival for Ash.

I agree that Tierno should've got Mega Blastoise. It literally made no sense for him to not have a Mega since even Trevor got one.

On the brighter side, Tierno certainly got better treatment compared to Trevor in the League. Unlike Trevor, who was totally fodder to Alain in the League, Tierno actually got an excellent and enjoyable battle with Sawyer in the League. Sawyer vs Tierno was an enjoyable battle which involved a lot of strategies and tactics if you look at it; and the battle as a whole wasn't a curbstomp, it technically came down to the wire, as it ended in a 3-2 result.

Tierno certainly also got a better treatment compared to Barry in DP, who in the League got 3-0 swept by Paul in the League, at least he lost 3-2 to Sawyer in the League, a battle which came down to the last Pokemon.

Sawyer beating Tierno was fine, because if you look at the Ash vs Sawyer rivalry carefully it's pretty much evident that Sawyer was always meant to be Ash's main rival in Kalos. The writers needed to establish Sawyer strength as Ash's main rival at the League, and so Sawyer beating Tierno helped that cause.

It was enjoyable, but it should have been 6on6. This was the first league where the quarterfinals were 3on3. Disappointing.

Eh, a non-Ash battle in the League being a fully shown 6 vs 6? When has that happened in the anime before? If it was full battle, then the writers likely would have skipped some parts of it and showed it like a 3 on 3 battle or so, like they might have started showing the battle after 3 of both Tierno and Sawyer's Pokemon have been knocked out or so.

All in the name of rushing.
Except the particular battle I was talking about wasn't rushed by any means and every part of that battle was pretty much thoroughly shown. If that battle is apparently 'rushed', then by that logic Paul vs Barry, Ash vs Conway at the Sinnoh League were also 'rushed'.

In hindsight if Tierno had been serious like Shinji, he might've been a much better rival. At least then he might've seemed like an actual threat to Satoshi, instead of him being so whimsical.

It hasn't happened, but that doesn't mean the quarterfinals should be 3on3. They should have been 6on6, had Ash and Astrid fully shown in a 2-episode battle, and then shown only the last 3 Pokémon each of Sawyer vs. Tierno as you said.

He was talking about the league being rushed.
