Wedding and Romance in Fics.

I wanted a wittier title like "Woke up in Vegas with a strange woman beside me." But, I figured that'd be too long. At any rate, I wanted to get a discussion going on how to best handle love, romance and weddings in fics. How would you guys do it? Would you do it? Why or why not? What'd be the best way?

Before I start, here is my view:

Love:

Love in fics is fine as long as you start slow and work your way to a romantic payoff. But, try not to have it cheesey. That's what I do. I tend to make it realistic and not necessarilly love at first sight. Though, if some guy sees a girl and says "Wow, she's hot." and pursues it later, then it's okay as long as the other person is reciprocal. It is also good if you don't rush things. Like have them meet up and then seconds later they're knockin' boots. Love takes time as they say. Just build it up.

Marriage:

Marriage in fics is fine in my opinion. In my stories, I don't do the traditional wedding. It should be okay to do.

Romance:

Romance is fine in fics and there's no law saying you can't do a love scene. Love scenes are fine but you have to really imply what they're doing. Don't go into the gory details. Just imply after a fair bit of hugging and kissing.

So, for me, love, marraige and romance is okay as long as it isn't cheesey and both parties are reciprocal in it. What are your thoughts on the issue?

Hush, keep it down
I tried to do it steadily and slowly in my fic. Rich had to first get over his broken heart from the past before loving anyone else, and having Anabel around all the time as a travel partner helped whittle his heart open again, and when it was, he realized that she loved him and he loved her too.

love... well, at first I thought there won't be any romance in Sabrina's Story, but after watching alot of Azumanga Daioh on Youtube, I found the idea of romance quite adorable.

Since the main characters of my fic are pokemon, none of the main characters are going to get married, I probably won't even have proper love relationships, rather, there's alot of unrequanted love, and there's the egg group barrier... That will certainaly make things alot more interesting then if both parties fell in love and predictibly got married.

YEAHHHHHHH
This will be a little spoiler, so readers of "Heart of the Sea" beware!

Well, I am going to have a little flashback romance scene where Damus' wife Jenna, then just one of the contenders in the Grand Festival, kissed him to prove to him that he is not a bad guy. The reason he felt like he was such a bad person was that he got a little too prideful while the two were going against each other in the Grand Festival. Don't worry, the two did not really love each other at first sight until after the Grand Festival ends. I am going to stop there or else I will ruin the plot of the next chapter more! (Gets shot).

Sorry if this consitutes "chessy" in some way.^^;

Yeah, I am okay with love, romance, and marriage in fics as long as it's realistic in some way. I believed the best way to do love and all is to go steadily, even though in real life there are those people that have fast realtionships. Can't say much since I am not the biggest fan of romance. (Gets shot)

;134;~Good night, and good luck~

Just to be clear, Ro x Zel in my fics was my own idea. I have never read Sabrina's story, and the fact myself and PDL both have a Combusken and Kirlia in any form of relatioship will purely be coincidence.

Good, glad that's cleared up.

Meh, if you hadn't guessed from the raves, banners and overall hyperactive reactions I have when it is mentioned, romance is something I generally write as a staple component of my fanfics(and seek out in those I read, I'm unstoppable!).

Emerald Lands looka at two romances. The first is from the 'jaded teenager angst' style. Drake's relationships in the past have all been, well the swear filter stops me describing them. Really, really bad is all I can say. So, when he develops a crush on Suila, he decides to just let it pass, trying to convince himself it'll pass like all the others. He lso does this because she already has a boyfriend, and from his view, odds are he couldn't compete with the guy for Suila's affection. Of course though, one affair and an equally jaded Suila later, and...well that would ruin it. Oh, and the fact that a crazed, sea blue thong wearing Shiny Trapinch continuously tries to play matchmaker doesn't help.

The second is the fact that despite differant egg groups, opposite types, and frequent seperation, the fact that the few things that bind them together(their abandonment and reliance on the other) are so strong is what somehow pulls them together. This is your 'feel good' romance really. Y'know, the ties that bind sorta thing.

Kitsune Capers looks more at how an imprisoned animal can grow to care about the one who captured it. Kit is a naturally free spirit, but following his father's death was forced to go on the run to stay alive. He escapes to another world, and before he can even start a new life, he owes some girl his life and is stuck as her guardian until the debt is repayed, thus keeping him stuck. Kitsune Capers shows how Nadine's willingness to accept Kit, and overall open mindedness lead to his feelings for her to change from resentment to love. Plus, it also looks at the natural urge of a species to be with it's own kind. If I go further into this, I'll ruin it. Let's just say there's more to Nadine than meets the eye.

New Lands, New Heroes is just point blank narrow mindedness conquering. The people in question literally hate each other, for very narrow minded reasons, the girl because she thinks when he helps her he's underestimating her, and him because she's human, but, to both's displeasure, he has a crush on the other. And they're forced to journey together alongside two other people, one of whom enjoys trying to play matchmaker. It's basically the odd couple from hell style romance.

A Legend Reborn is similar to the above, except with superpowers instead of Pokemon. The main characters in NL, Nh and ALR are very similar, just in differant situations(plus in LRA they're slightly older).

Marriage I only look at once. And I can't say where as that would ruin it. But as a titbit, it's a kinda silly wedding. A Shiny Rayquaza is the best man...kinda...just don't ask.

EDIT: On a side note, I have written a pure romance story, and it came out pretty good IMO. I never once used the phrase "I love you", and it wasn't cliche. I'd post it, but it was English handwritten coursework, so my teacher has the final copy. best version too unfortunatly.

Well, first off, I rather dislike the "love at first sight" kind of romance, especially when the characters in question decide to marry or whatever the next day (and yes, out of love and not something else). I just find that kind of thing too...idealistic and unrealistic. I mean, even if the relationship is successful at first, it'd be one hell of a stroke of luck if, once they really start to learn about each other, they feel they can stand being together for the rest of their lives.

I more prefer romantic plotlines that aren't the main focus of the story. Oh sure, they can have some effect on the overall plot, but I don't like it when authors do whatever they can to flaunt the pairing that they might have in their fic(s). I've only read and liked one fanfic that's had romance as a truly lasting theme. (Oh sure, I've read many that have had romance as a big plot point, but of the ones that take that plot point and make it practically the main focus of the story, I've only really liked the one.)

I also prefer realistic romance. Again, none of that "love at first sight and get married the next day" crap. In my own works, the romance that appears, even that which stems from existing relationships, is developed slowly over the course of the story. If any sort of serious romance must happen, I prefer that it develops in a similar manner.

I can't really say where I stand on marriage and other love-related scenes as I don't really see them in fics, and while a couple of my fantasy roleplay characters will get married as part of their stories, I won't write about any sort of wedding, just imply that it's happened. Though I guess I'd be fine as long as they're, again, realistic and not a gigantic flaming pile of cheese-whiz. =p

I'd like to say that if you have no experience with love and romance, it probably isn't a very good idea to emphasize it in your fic. That's why I don't plan on having much romance. I've never had a girlfriend, so I can't really understand any of it.

Ah, romance, love, and marriage. Gonna discuss them in order, neh?

Love:

There's no such thing as "love" at first sight. I just don't see that strong of an atraction coming that quickly. It could be "attraction" at first sight, but not love.

One of my characters has a boyfriend, and it takes them two who books to come to the comfort level that normal boy/girlfriends have. (At the time of the writing, I was going through something like that myself...)

Marriage:

The only wedding scene that I ever wrote was just the "I do's." That was it. The entire story before that scene was just to show that these two characters really love one another. (Cheesy...whee-hooo...)

Romance:

...does not equal sex. Me being a Romantic, I like the flowers, the candle-light dinner, and dangit! I want a scene in the rain! :< However, most of my stories involve characters that can't sit down for a dinner in a restuarant.

Unless you are writing an Harrelquinn(sp?) Romance book, don't have romance as the main plot. Half the time, the plot comes out clichéd...and possibly cheesy.

*realizes that that post might not have helped anyone.*

I really think it's best to start out slow. Like, in my fic,
You can tell at the beginning something's gonna happen with Samus and Spire. But, it's a very small hint. They're relationship is gonna gradually build up throughout the next chapters, and then, well, I don't want to spoil the near-ending. =P

But anyway, build it up gradually, never just use that "love at first sight" crap. It'll just make your fic awful and cliche. And if you MUST include a sex scene, don't go overboard with details. That could either attract pervs, or repel your reviewers. Also, as with everything in a fic, avoid cliches.

When it comes to love and romance, I am like the king. :)

However, I am sure there are those who are better than me with putting them into fics. So I can not truely call myself the king, but I am very good with it.

Love/Romance: Now, I many times do have love at first sight. However, the added little thing I put in is that the many charcters are afraid to tell something like that to the one they love. What if they reject them? There is indeed always that chance. I have also enjoyed the best friends falling in love deal. Once again the "What if they reject them?" deal comes into play. It is indeed rather wierd to have a friend that is head over heels for you, and you don't have any feelings for them whatsoever. Of course, I always have the relationship develop overtime. How long it takes for such a thing to develop is always different. I indeed build it up over time.

I indeed like writing love/romance with Pokemon. Aside from looks, you're practically creating your own charcter. Now, there are a few rules I follow. I do keep it in with the Egg Groups, save for Legendaries. For instance, in my fic, The Trials of the Pendant, I have a Celebi, which I made male, fall for a female Misdreavus. They end up developing quite a relationship as they do end up having a child from an egg. Just sad that the female is killed only minutes before the egg hatches. :( (For those who like to get off topic and discuss the issue of a ghost type dying. I'll just tell you that I believe ghost types to be regular pokemon with ghost like capabilities. They can die and reproduce just like any other pokemon. Two simple things that wouldn't be normal for a real ghost.)

You know what the sad part of writing all this romance stuff is? I end up getting n00bish readers who HATE the pairing and give me a 1 star rate for just that reason. Don't you just hate that? :)

Weddings: Ah, weddings. How I love thee. ^_^

Well, when it comes to weddings, I mostly go with traditional. However, there are exceptions. For instance, I use Misty getting married to Ash in several of my stories, and when that happens, she doesn't wear the traditional white dress. In fact, the wedding doesn't take place in a church, rather outside in an open feild. In fact, that's how all my weddings have happened. You don't need a church to get married, just someone who is allowed to be the alterer. (Or whatever you prefer to call them.) So it is not quite traditional, but the clothing is most likely. ^_^

Now, pokemon getting married... I will not deny it in any way, shape or form. In my story, The Trials of the Pendant, the pokemon live in a world of laws and orders. One of which is that they have to get married to live together and raise a family. All of which laws have been developed by an evil pokemon king. One that indeed has some issues with Mewtwo. As since he was developed by humans, he isn't a real pokemon and thus can't marry another pokemon. Which also deprives humanxpokemon relationships. The only way you are allowed to break the rule, is that you have to fight the king in a duel, where your victory allows you to get married and live by all the other laws of the kingdom.

Other than that, it's just a little fun thing humans do sometimes with their pokemon when they notice the two being head over heels for one another. :p

Well, I hope that shows my opinion. I'll see ya later. ^_^

well, for the record, the relationship between Kentucky and Sabrina is completely platonic, yeah, they do care for each other, but there's no chance it'll become romantic. Their personalities are too different.

The unrequainted love will occur between minor and supporting characters

Good discussion so far! The reason I asked was because I have quite a few couples in my story. I also have a wedding too that'll take place near the end and will be on an alien world. The wedding isn't the traditional human wedding so, I had to make things up and get the jist near the end. It involves a lot of the mythology of the species on the world. There'll probably be a wedding on Earth but I decided on a wedding on the other world since it'd be a good idea to show that race's wedding.

There's a few other relationships in the story. Another alien/human couple and a couple human/human couples. There are no Pokemon in my story. Pokemon in my story's a video game/anime. But, I digress...

There's one relationship I may need some tips on. See, there was this hero named Titanus (Dennis) who helped to save this twentysomething named Sara from an organizaion that makes Team Rocket look like the Boy Scouts. I figure I'll take it slow with Sara but I have a question:

When do you think Sara and Dennis should hook up? Sara isn't sure what love is and has spent her life in the clutches of Terra Nova (the evil organization). My friend who created her and let me use her suggested this idea:

[spoil]Sara'd be practicing with Dennis in the training room. Dennis is a pretty strong guy and he powers down, revealing his muscles and the like. He's kinda sweaty and being a gentleman, he says to Sara. "What do ya say we clean up an' head ta lunch?"

Sara'd be taken aback and be like "Okay" She talked to her lady frienids on the team. She's shown interest in some of the other single guys on the team but Dennis is the one who saved her weeks ago.

They go eat and Sara gets something on the side of her mouth. Dennis motions that she has something on her lip. Sara doesn't get it (and a lot of things since she was a captive and taught only how to kill, talk etc). Dennis leans forward o remove it.

They kiss, back up and Dennis is like blushing. Dennis is a southern good ol' boy from the farm and treats ladies with respect. He's also built like a WWE superstar. They stand up and face each other. She sees his muscles through his shirt and is like "Woah."

It's an awkward moment. He walks her home to where her parents live (Her parents are superheroes. She goes in the house and Dennis says "See ya at practice!" The door shuts, Dennis turns to walk back to base and Sara runs back out and plants one on him.[/spoil]

That'd be the sytart of their relationship probably weeks after my current story and into my new story coming up. Not gonna say much but Sara is replacing someone on the team. She isn't joining the rookies.

So, how is that idea in terms of starting the relationship? It's not rushed or anything, I don't think. Plus it's weeks since she was rescued. Dennis is the only one who can go near her with her powers being what they are (intense solar heat/light projection and absrobtion). Dennis isn't affected and teaches her.

So, how does that work? It's not right away and we probably won't see the teaching much. Though I could do a one shot. Not everyone, though is hooking up in the story. Two of the couples are already defined from previous stories and they developed over time.
