• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

Weird moves certain Pokemon can or cannot learn

Yveltal91057

I love the smell of cows farting in the morning.
A sample list of Pokémon who potentially can learn Aura Sphere/Psychic

Kingdra
Houndoom
Yanmega
Talonflame
Zebstrika
Camerupt
Tyrantrum
Tyranitar
Haxorus
Axew
Fraxure
Houndour
Corviknight
Lanturn

What is aura? It can be described as an external manifestation of mental, physical and spiritual energy.

Psychic is best described as the physical manifestation of mental energy.

Pokemon with Klutz Ability cannot use Fling. It could be a fun damaging move to toss your Toxic Orb using Lopunny.
But the developers probably suspected situations like this and decided that it would not be fair in online.

So why does the Klutz ability need to exist, were they just tossing random ideas as a sick joke?

Bunneary can still make Klutz useful if you breed Switcharoo on it. Switcharoo isn’t affected by Klutz. So you can Badly Poison your opponent on the first turn.

Hydreigon now gets Stealth Rock in gen 9 . It's not completely odd as it does get other rock moves but it still did surprise me they decided to give it such a passive move given how aggressive its generally described. Especially considering how few Pokemon got buffed with this move.

I think it exists because moves like Thief, Trick, and Switcheroo exist. To make it seem like you have a held item worth stealing, only for it to end up debilitating the opponent who tried to take it.

Hisuian Avalugg gets Strong Jaw as an ability option and yet misses out on a lot of moves to use with that. It literally only gets Bite, Crunch & Ice fang. I would expect it to get a move like Psychic Fangs (which is a TM) given a lot of Strong Jaw Pokemon get the move.

It's a problem that was thankfully already fixed a long time ago but it boggles my mind that Aerodactyl couldn't learn Rock Slide until Gen 3.

I still don't understand why Gyarados can't learn Fly despite the fact that we've LITERALLY seen it fly a million times.

Just let it learn Fly already!

I thought it just glided through the air after jumping really really high similar to Gligar and Gliscor.

But how does it even glide My guess it actually slithers on the battle but is classified as a unique form of flying.

Mew can't learn Fire Pledge, Grass Pledge, or Water Pledge.

Popplio can't learn Bubble
Pledge Moves are starter moves connected to bonds with a starter just like Mega Stones, Z-Crystals and other gimmicks requiring trainers to be in sync.
As for Popplio, the bubble move being replaced is probably intended to but on a rapid show. But it can probably focus on a single bubble like Lana's Popplio did in the show.

The exact description of fly is "The Pokémon soars/flies up into the sky , then strikes in the next turn" so in order to use the move "Fly" it isn't the same thing as Flying (the action) so my best guess as to the reason is it that it may not be able to fly high enough as you need to be able to reach the Sky or at least soar to a significant height to use the move. It may be that can only get to the height where it can use "bounce". Look at all the flying bugs that cannot learn fly despite being very good at flying. Outside of Legends Arceus it tend to stay close to the ground after all. Though with Gyarados if it was my call I would probably let it learn the move fly given how few other flying moves it gets as a flying type and given how it was capable in legends it would be something that might be worth it getting at some point.

No idea but in Legends Arceus it can be found Flying/Gliding through the air outside of battle. So it has some form of flight though the exacts mechanics are unclear. I suppose it could do similar to Rayquaza's flying method whatever that is.

There is one type of flight in the anime/manga one piece, Momonosuke ate a imperfect devil fruit that gives him a dragon form and he usually flies by creating clouds to climb on.
Bleach most characters seem to be able to stand in air for as long as they want.
Naruto characters seem to be able to both jump from trees for long distances and the ability to stand in the air for seemingly no reasons.

There's any number of explanations that are possible. All we know for certain is it was able to do some form of flight in Legends Arceus but until its elaborated upon its all guesswork

When I saw a Misdreavus use Aerial Ace in XD, I was CONVINCED it was an illegal moveset for the sake of making the trainer's Imprison gimmick work. How does a floating head slash at someone?

Ghost energy similar to Shadow Claw?

My guess on this is that if you look at the move description in gen 3 it was "An extremely speedy and unavoidable attack/ an extremely fast attack that can't be avoided". It didn't mention slashing until gen 4 so I suppose its possible it got the move before they decided it had slashing and then had to stick with it (at least for a time). In gen 3 the way the move was also presented in the anime as being less slashy and more a crash into the opponent after fancy flying. Interestingly it can't learn the move in gen 9 anymore so they may have decided it no longer works.

Given its origin, Gliscor should be able to learn Leech Life.

That and given the move's Japanese name is suck blood and the legends Arceus dex says "It glides soundlessly on pitch-black wings and sinks sharp fangs into the throat of its prey. It takes on a look of satisfaction once it has entirely drained its prey of blood." it would make sense for it to get the move.

so can Gyarados still use Flamethower? because I know in one generation of the game he could, witch never made sense to me,

I always thought it was kind of Funny Rydon is a Ground / Rock Type that hates water but can use the move Surf.

also I had a Slowking in the original Silver version that had Zap Cannon, witch I didn't get that either.

I say Chancey learning Toxic took me by Surprise in the older games, when did they change it to only posion types could use toxic witch in truth makes more sense?

Yes Gyarados still learns Flamethrower and they gutted Toxic’s near universal distribution in Gen 8
