What are aspects you dislike about your favorite characters?

I'll start

Misty could of done way more during her stay. And to this day I think her cameo (first one) was the worst.

Dawn becoming an Ash clone was slightly annoying and I disliked how half of her team prior to Quliava was unevolved

I liked Serena towards the end of XY but Amour was a sad attempt for ratings that consisted of her blushing and his obliviousness. Gets boring after awhile

The fact DP was dragging Brock along was just sad. And by this time the love gag was tired and worn out.

Serena love her development as character, easily my favorite character but i dislike how they use her just for shipping bait in early XY saga, i dislike her battle record ( worst female battle record maybe mallow would join in) , and her interaction with clemont it just empty nothing in there ( i kinda blame the writer for shoving amour shipping bait for that)

Silver Soul
If that (Dawn only being in 1 series) counts then Paul not travelling other regions in the same “league seasons” that Ash did since let’s face it no other Ash rivalry came close.

Serena :

- Not having a special episode
- Her huge lack of interactions with all the male characters except Ash, it would be cool if Serena and Kiawe/Sophocles/Brock make good friends if they met but I guess it will never happen.
- Lack of Pokemon , I wish she had more Pokemon in hands even if her little team is amazing
- Lack of focusing episodes even if I can understand that her saga was the shortest and had 4 characters to focus on
- Lack of chemistry with Pancham
- Lack of funny moments , she had some at the begining but not a lot after her haircut
- Lack of "badass" or "powerhouse" Pokemon like all the previous girls had , she needs to evolve Pancham

May :

- Small cameo
- She had a great cameo but the purpose was to help Dawn , I wish she got something about her and about how she could improve herself
- Eevee's evolution

Brock :

- Too perfect

Mallow and Lana

I am not expecting much out of these two, but I really want them to have a team change soon. Lillie I'm OK with not having many Pokemon (although I wish she would, her fear comes into play). Mallow in particular needs more focus episodes. I don't particulary mind that her dream is to make the Aina cafe the best in Alola, I just wish they would give a bit more focus to it.

Shauna

A poor rival, offering little substantial competition after being beaten by a routine Serena had practiced the night before.

While Team Rocket remain my favourite characters, I admit they have become VERY stale antagonists for Ash and co. Almost all their face offs are utterly automated and bland and one sided in a way that makes watching the show more monotonous than humorous (Bewear aside) and the TRio WAY too often exist as mere plot devices for the plots the writers can't be bothered to finish, making them feel like 'abort buttons' for some of the twerps' character development. They do at least still have their personalities most of the time, but that only worsens it since their eternal underdog role also makes it harder and harder not to convey the twerps as boring invincible heroes and cost them their rootable qualities (they're heroic sure, but that's not the same as rootable) especially since the two sides now have ZERO chemistry.

For my particular favourite TR member, I find it a shame they don't let Meowth battle competently besides VERY spaced occasions. Sure I can buy learning to talk cost him some of his experience, but I could still see a sneaky fella like him fighting dirty to get the upper hand more often, which actually happens even less (vs Brock's Onix in Togepi's debut and vs Pikachu in the Pokeball factory episode are the only occasions I can think of).

Mallow:
Underdeveloped as hell
Steenee's only purpose is being a cute waitress
Can't even hold her own against Team Rocket, which is quite embarrassing when even a baby stupidly beat their SM selves.
Her goal.... in a world full of Pokemon, her goal is having the best restaurant?! ANY show on the planet could have that as a goal, it should be something interesting and related to you know.... Pokemon?

James:
Hasn't obtained two new Pokemon in a single saga since AG. BW doesn't count, he doesn't own those anymore for one and we never saw him catch Amoongus.
Last evolution was in OS.... fingers crossed for Mareanie!

Meowth:
Hasn't had an episode to himself since BW

Jessie:
Gets more focus episodes than the other Rocket members

Team Rocket as a whole:
Underused in SM
Lost to Lillie right after beating Ash -_-

Kiawe:
Doesn't get enough screen time or battle time
Is supposed to be a powerful trainer, yet we've never seen him win a battle

Team Skull Trio:
Mysteriously vanished after Gladion's debut

Jigglypuff:
Coming back.... -_-

Ash:
Being the butt monkey of SM. It was funny the first few times, and still is occasionally. But they overdo it, he should know you can't find wild Megas for one.

All set to be a nice guy
Serena :
- 40 episodes to find a goal was a bit too long
- She was quite funny before her outfit change, less so after the change, barring the humourous reactions to Miette's teasing
- Showcases as a goal weren't very well done
- Should've caught one more Pokémon. I really would've liked seeing her with a Mudkip.
- Should've had one of those huge, badass Pokémon equivalent to Mamoswine and Dragonite. Pangoro would've been ideal.
- Interactions with Clemont were lacking.
- While her role was still fine, I do wish she had an even bigger role in the Team Flare arc.

Dawn :
- Randomly getting Togekiss
- Releasing Ambipom for one of the dumbest reasons the anime has seen yet
- Never ended up beating Zoey
- Lack of interactions with Brock
- Caught the stupid catchphrase in BW

Fear the Chicken!
I like Serena, but didn't like how her story was handled.
Without Contests or mastering a type, they had NO idea what to do with her. The Showcase arc, sadly, didn't help much, giving her Princess Keys on a silver platter for doing the same thing over and over while making mountains out of molehills when giving her problems. Also, I don't get amourshipping. Not only was her crush on Ash essentially just blushing and acting awkward like a refugee from a Shojo story (and even they do better at romance), but someone in charge seem to forget this is a show about 10 year-olds for 10 year-olds. Romance has little place here.

I love ya, Misty, but after Kanto you did so little you may as well have been a recurring instead of a main one. Heck, even in mid-Kanto she lost her mojo after she got the soul stealing egg beast...

Bonnie was cute and genuinely child-like as a supporting character & before the title change. But when she had the spotlight & after the title change she was a brat. The dub makes it even worse.

The TRio have a lot of personality, help boring episodes be more bearable, and the kids in Japan love them...but it's SO old and tired. Even when they're at their best. Especially since they're based on a nigh-obsolete archetype barely anyone uses anymore. The Dub makes things much, MUCH worse than it needs to be...

I liked Alain in the Mega Evolution Specials, but his storyline in the Show proper was VERY poorly handled. It amazes me he got a mini-series to build him up...then it was like they didn't know what to do with him in the main series. His partner Pokemon being OP AF was bad enough, but what really bothers me is how half-assed and rushed his "rivalry" with Ash was.
The sad part is that it could've been better with an episode or two of them running into each other again--not necessarily to battle, but to team-up or hang out--in place of some of those bland fillers instead of him nigh-randomly and obsessively wanting to battle a kid he barely knew and defeated twice...

Misty deserved more in Johto. There was no reason to get rid of her at the end of OS, since she easily could have transitioned into doing Contests as a Water-type enthusiast. Wallace could have been her mentor/influence.

May is the best, but got off easy on one or two Contests. She could have really benefited from being in DP (although that'd mean no Dawn), and having another season of tougher rivals and forced to produce more complex combos; that could have all culminated in a Grand Festival win.

Dawn's character became a bit static in the second half of DP, and too much like a female Ash's. Her Pokemon team handling was wonky, and she should have been able to beat Zoey.

Gary didn't appear enough in Johto to make that rivalry battle between him and Ash as compelling as Ash v Paul. In fact, he needs to appear more often.

Alain would have benefited from not spamming Charizard all the time, especially since he had a pretty good team otherwise (especially that Bisharp). They could have expanded on his character more.

While Lillie's overall personality is rounded enough, her actual limelight pre-Lumasine has been rather one note, revolving mostly around her phobia and not using this early point to focus on limelighting her role as a rookie trainer or on other aspects of her character such as her meekness. We haven't really seen her do much with Snowy either besides perpetually cradle her like a Togepi 2.0 (still only knows Powder Snow). I could be wrong and that's coming into fray later, but it feels like with the main plot now incoming, they've wasted the obligated time for all of that.

Similarly Kiawe and Sophociles are likeable enough and have enough limelight and substance in their abilities, but their overall long term ambitions seem a bit unspecified. They take part in odd battles and games but otherwise we just know they're a student/lite type specialist. While Kiawe takes the role of mentor/Alola expositionalist well enough, I would like if we saw more times Sophociles' tech skills were plot relevant, what happened to him looking into Ash's Z power?

We also need to see more of their Pokemon in the limelight too, especially since they're some of the most enjoyable besides Ash's this series. Only Togedemaru has got a lot of limelight, and even then mostly as comic relief (like Snowy, also only knows one move, even if it's utilised cleverly) while Turtonator, Charjabug and Marowak aren't shown a whole lot, despite the exceptions usually being fun and the two trainers utilising them rather well.

Serena: not really doing much for 40 episodes, never really improving her skills, lack of creativity in Showcases

Bonnie: She got away with a bit too much at times

Lana: Not being the main character

Delia: Not knowing her past is infuriating

Brock: Guy got little development

Gary: Ditched his cheerleaders and car

Tobias: His arrogance

Ash: Where is your original hat? You sent in like a million boxtops for it.

- I wished Brock was more than a background character in DP. I didn’t like how DP eventually became the Ash & Dawn show.

- Iris’ Dragonite getting at least a win whenever he’s obedient. Otherwise a decent Pokémon that Iris earned better than Dawn’s Togekiss.

- Paul insulting Ash more only because recently I’ve gained a newfound respect for him and find it hilarious.

- More screen time from Cilan’s Stunfisk. And Cilan in general doing more connoisseur-related things

- Mallow needs development badly. I love her personality but I won’t deny that she has gotten the short end of the stick along with Sophocles.

I don't think the goal itself is bad, it's probably the most developed one of the SM companions so far, it's just the writers are hardly putting any innovation or dynamic story to it. Only one episode has really went into how she used Pokemon uniquely to this ambition and even then, like with Kiawe and Sophociles it was a kind of episodic thing, only even they put way more substance into their's than her. Steenee's only boost was a DEM evolution and despite having a fuller move set than most of the other Pokemon this series, we rarely see her do much other than smacking around Rowlet (which doesn't really help her look anymore likeable).

You can kind of tell the writers have no idea how to put life and character into what she does because the overwhelming majority of her limelight so far has involved either being relegated to the background or doing generic plot-armored tasks like TR curb stomps for superficial scout points, which like you said, never really do much for their skills since they are through situations a blind idiot four year old could have done.

It's a shame, she sticks out among the SM cast, who, despite not being brilliantly developed in their goals, have enough character and substance in what they do. You can kind of tell when the writers have a full grasp of a character or not, because they become more driven by their own character. Ash can be a complete winner or loser at things according to his personality and niches for example, same for the likes of Sophociles, Kiawe and even some earlier additions like Clemont. The only thing we know they're likely mandated never to do is win the final of a main goal tournament. Then we have others with really undeveloped niches and quirks like Mallow or Serena, so spend most of their limelight plot driven to hide it, only given dumbed down dilemmas the plot's lore ensures they can never lose and not feeling very integral or enjoyable in action, even if their personality in itself isn't bland.

No one is without flaws, so among my favorite characters its undeniable they had several weaknesses leaving a lot more to be desired.

To name some:

Misty: she may be my top favorite protagonist from pokemon series but I do wish she rained her pokemon more on screen. Granted that's writers fault, but still seeing her do visible training not related to Togepi and Psyduck would had been very much appreciative.

Her temper as adorable as it could be did sometimes crossed the line dishing out more harsh words and actions than needed toward other characters not recognizing that herself. However to be fair she became more aware of her flaws and open to different opinions later on.

She should had received much, much more focus in Johto than what it came down to in end having enough life left in herself, potential and interesting things to warrant staying as main character.

At very least for whole AG generation given how heavy water centric it was offering ton of new water pokemon, specialists like Wallace and Juan from who she could learn more innovative techniques. Hell villains Team Aqua connected to legendary Kyogre were perfect opportunity to have water enthusiast and someone who devoted himself to become water master to be involved in whole thing trying to stop them.

Bottom line Misty received short end of stick with her status as main character ending prematurely.

May: she could sometime went overboard with whole crying streaks pitying herself when falling under Harley tricks or losing contests.

I mean its ok to feel let down and disappointed when something you invested into so much don't pay of, but this happened a bit too often for my taste wishing she learned how to suck it up and become more strong willed of character.

She sometime lacked creativity in her appeal rounds feeling abit bland and predictable after some time. And while i enjoyed her more straightforward and direct trainer battling style under Ash influence for her profession to did her eventually quite a harm.

Ash: I like this guy but he is unfortunately pretty dumb, and his lack of knowledge or fact of being incredibly dense can be highly irritating at times. Even for most obvious things like TR setting up trap through his friends could see through with no problem(special mention to Misty who was more skilled in that than any other companion).

Or girls clearly showing signs of romantic affection, sometime even not noticing clear signs of what his own pokemon want making fool out of himself.

Ash can be genius in battling with pokemon, trains and work hard. But he became over the years too accustomed with strategies and moves which work for agile and fast pokemon. And he makes best results with speedy pokemon being in his own element.

But as consequence heavy, bulkier tank like pokemon are his Achilles heel not doing much research and preparation to develop effective battle style for them. And it was showed best with Torterra in DP how he should be more versatile as trainer. Not relying only on certain pokemon that much.

Ash neglects his friend. I know its writers fault obviously, but way things are depicted. Never calling or checking up on May, Misty, Cilan, Brock, Dawn etc. Hardly ever visiting them etc gives impression of not thinking much about those who helped him to evolve in trainer and person he bis today or don't care much in general.

I know that's not true, but it seems that way.

Brock: deserved more screentime, character development in general.

His approach toward girls and women in general is wrong and after some time became more tedious than funny. And I wished he battled more because he has lot of impressive pokemon and interesting battling moves.

I love ya, Misty, but after Kanto you did so little you may as well have been a recurring instead of a main one.

To be fair that's fault of executives meddling in writers plans(something mr. Shudo in blogs made rather obvious) and anime being in early stages still not being even decided its faith, let alone direction of characters.

Still Misty almost shared focus and attention equally in Orange Islands being incredibly active there. Heck she managed to even overshadowed 2 of Ash gym battles with whole Danny and Rudy flirting games and playing hero in saving sister from one of them life.:D

In Johto you have a point though not fully because in Master Quest Misty really SHINED. Whole Whirl islands detour and in general whole season gave her lot of quality spotlight.

Heck, even in mid-Kanto she lost her mojo after she got the soul stealing egg beast...

Ouch, that's harsh. Togepi was just fragile baby needing someone to take care of him, And this did helped Misty to mature and become more compassionate as person allowing for one of most emotional and well done goodbyes in pokemon in Misty first Hoenn cameo. Giving both some nice character growing.

Most importantly i don't think Misty lost her spark and soul. I guess you could say she was less violent but that's understandable since she matured, though still showing lot of spunk, passion for various hobbies having competitive flare and passion.

She often ignited reaction from Ash side with snarky remarks and annoyance and better balanced out Brock eccentric personality having more memorable friendship with all companions in main cast than any other imo. On top of that i enjoyed in healthy mix of prideful and mature, yet tomboyish and quirky side bringing more humor, tension and fun dialogue between characters in unforced, spontaneous manner than Iris did for me seeming to develop stronger friendship with her friends.

Still seeming highly passionate, snarky and with life in her eyes in late Johto, chronicles and recently SM episodes.
