I actually thought that was funny. It was a gag-like way to explain that Wallace is no longer the Hoenn Champion and have Ash defeat him before facing the new Champion later on. I guess it would've been cool to have them properly show the battle, but it was still a funny segment in an episode that wasn't dedicated to that in the first place imo.
