Nope Light is the protagonist and L is the antagonist by the formal definition of those terms; however, a strong case can be made that Light is the villain and L is the hero.

L: Not a villain, he is actually the good guy who is trying to catch/identify the mass-murderer Kira. Sure he's against the protagonist, but being against the protagonist doesn't make you a villain, especially when the protagonist is the villain himself.

A protagonist simply means the principal character of the story and the antagonist is someone or something that runs directly in opposition to the protagonist. Moral alignment isn’t a factor in determining protagonist and antagonist.

Also in a pure statistical sense what Light is doing would result in greater net human well being (consider the average number of people who die or are severely harmed by violent crimes every year then consider that Kira through his actions reduced such crimes by over 70% within 5 years). The beauty of Death Note is that there’s no clear right answer to the moral dilemma presented to the viewer though it’s easier to label Light as the villain due to the depiction of his gradual descent into psychopathy throughout the show as well as his less than noble intent behind several of his actions.

My top ten non-Pokémon anime characters are:

1.) Yusuke Urameshi- He was originally a brat who didn’t really care about anyone else other than himself and Keiko that eventually matured and started to care more about how certain events could affect the entire mortal world.

2.) Kurama- He was always an interesting character given he was a demon fused with a human but he never acted on his demonic nature and was willing to give up his life for his human “mother.” Plus his Rose Whip is a rather strong and effective weapon given it’s only a vine with thorns.

3.) Hiei- I’ve always found it fascinating how he managed to redeem himself and also developed into a more complex character as the series went on. He always seems cold and uninterested in the affairs of others until we are introduced to Yukina and we see the lengths he’ll go to protect her and the people he cares about.

4.) Genkai- It is interesting to see that such an old and frail looking woman could be so strong and also somewhat sadistic yet effective in her training methods. I’ve always liked the bickering between her and Yusuke.

5.) Usagi/Sailor Moon- She helped make anime extremely popular outside of Japan and it’s amazing how much she changes as the series went on.

6.) Zatch Bell- I like how naive and goofy Zatch can be but also very kind and concerned about how the winner of the Demon King tournament could affect the lives of those in the Mamodo World and how some of the participants are being forced to fight.

7.) Brago- I like how he may seem cold and distant but it is just an act as he really begins to enjoy Sherry’s company and understands her hatred of Zofis and he supports her goal of burning the book of the Momodo that brainwashed her closest friend to become evil.

8.) Sherry Belmont- At first her motives for wanting Brago to become King was never said until Zofis decided to attack using the Mamodo he freed from being turned into stone and forced to follow him. Sherry is atypical of the usual rich girl in that while she used her wealth to finance traveling the world to find and defeat Zofis and free Koko, she still cares for others and doesn’t act haughty and better than the people around her. She was also cunning enough to see through the mind games Zofis had used during their battle.

9.) Laila- She was the only Ancient Mamodo brave enough to openly defy Zofis and assist in his downfall. Laila also showed us how cruel Zofis was and the horrible threats he made to anyone who stood up to him and still went against him knowing the risks.

10.) Zofis- Quite possibly the one of the most sadistic anime characters out there. He brainwashes others to do all the dirty work and acts tough but he is really a coward as seen in his defeat after Brago threatens to make his life miserable in the Mamodo World if he didn’t erase Koko’s memories of all the horrible things she did under his control. The fact that it took human/Mamodo teams to take down his army with three lost books and then the remaining seven teams to work together to defeat him is saying something.

Don't know about Top 10 but here's a recent favorite.

Look at this guy? What's the first thing that comes to mind? This guy must be some big bad guy? NOPE! This jackass is the main character of the Hardcore Leveling Warrior webtoon lol. Actually that's literally his character's name, Hardcore Leveling Warrior. I don't know about you but I like game-focused manga/comics/webtoon. I'm not talking about just video games, I'm talking stories that focus on all kinds of games like the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga and the Hardcore Leveling Warrior webtoon is deep into all sorts of games where an OP character with the most dangerous skills can be a noob if he doesn't know the rules and one of the most interesting things about HLW's character is that his abilities play around high-risk, high reward. However abilities don't tell us who a character is except that such an ability may say he's pretty cocky and he is. HLW is a freaking douchebag when you first meet him. You know that toxic player that boasts how good he is and unfortunately he has the skills to back it up, that's Hardcore Leveling Warrior until one day he's bested by a mysterious stranger forcing him to reset to Lv. 1. Not only is he back to Lv. 1 but the whole gaming community he's been toxic to wants him dead and that's basically his story arc. He wants to become the number 1 player again but he has to actually work with people in an environment that wants him dead for his toxicity, prevailing against the odds while dealing with his own toxic personality.

Well it does say 'if she counts' but sounds like a girl, looks like a girl (eyelashes, build) and no confirmation of being male = so I assume female (and this is referring to the anime, manga is more ambiguous)
