No its definitely just a more annoying female bulbasaur. If it was treecko ot would have evolved.

OK, again:
- Replacing Brock with way better characters than him
- The main group feels balanced, not 2 characters and a babysitter or 2 characters, a little sidekick and a a maid or 1 character and 2 cheerleaders.
- Plots that breaks the typical pattern of "COTD has a problem with his/her Pokémon and it magically gets solved when Pikachu blasts Team Rocket off"
- Ash´s compannions are treated equally and not as cheerleaders giving them rivals and plots even if they won´t have a Grand-Festival-type competitions
- Characters interactions, Ash barely interacted with May´s or Yawn´s rivals and viceversa, now we can see Ash interacting with Georgia and Burgundy, Iris with Stephan, Cilan with Trip, interactions make Pokémon Tournaments way more interesting
- Team Rocket not stealing spotlight every single episode with their boring "humour" and actually being a competent threat
- Ash having a personality again
- Throwing curve balls to the viewers a.k.a. trolling the audience
- Not following the patterns from previous seasons making this season unpredictable



If you´re looking for extreme generalizations, you should look for Unova bashers, and if you´re looking for one-dimensional and boring characters, you should watch the Pokémon season that ended 2 years ago.
Ash can´t emote because he has been milked to the max, he should have left the series after Orange Islands, now he is just a Pikachu stroller, he can´t hold the weight of the series all by himself.

Okay, a real answer:

- All three main characters actually battle even though two of the characters' goals seem kinda tongue-in-cheek and not very fleshed out.
- Ash rotates, but again, this comes with a catch. Ash hasn't had a team with such uneven distribution of screentime since Johto.
