• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

What do you think about EVs/IVs

Personally, I think they shouldn't have been made. I like Pokemon because of its straight forward battling, not because of HARDCORE training, killing time by looking for rare Pokemon just to kill them for their EV and stuff. It was fine when it was just battling and getting Exp.

What do you think of EVs?

i am glad they exist, i didnt pay any attention to stats until while playing minecraft on raidcall the host started talkin about EV training, then i was like
" what is dis eevee training you speak of???" and thats when i decided to EV train a porygon-Z:D

I only just learned that EVs existed and I'm still not quite sure what they are. My brain refuses to process them, so I just shrug and ignore them.

They are OK. The only in-game feature that requires them is the Battle Frontier or whichever current equivalent is, and that's for people who go competitive anyway. They make Pokémon individuals more unique, which is a nice thing to have; however, I think IVs at least showcase too little, there's no way to know what a wild Pokémon would be like before catching him. A way to make IV/EV trends more apparent in individuals would be nice, and should be easy now that they're going for 3D models and stuff. I guess it would be also welcome as it would lead to shorter decision making, but I can be mistaken there.

So what you're saying is you never liked Pokemon? Then feel free to stop playing it.

I don't mind them that much. With the advent of simulators for competitive battling, I don't have to worry about them in game, so I mostly just ignore them. That said, for in game, I kinda like them, as they give everything a little bit of a twist.

I just wondered upon them this genaration. At first I didn't know what to think. Then I realized I always dreamed of a way to maximize my pokemon's abilities. Eventually came around to them after I was too depressed to play pokemon after finding them out & that I've been missing this since forever lol.

why are you saying that?someone can like pokemon, but not like EVs.i'm trying EV training, just to see how much of a difference it can make, and i'm a causal player who does mostly the main story, then plan for another.someone doesn't have to be a super hardcore battler,or have to EV train, they can just play to have fun,not to win.however,i HATE IVs,because i can have a pokemon, but it stinks because it has horrible IVs,or i can have a pokemon that someone wants, and they don't want it because it isn't flawless, even if it's rare.that's like turn down a black lotus,a 10,000$ card, and the absolutely hardest card to find in mtg, because it has a small white mark in the corner

You can play the game both ways. Why does my way have to be ruined to make room for yours? We can both enjoy it.

hello, im back sorta
In-game battles and the E4, Battle Frontier, Battle Subway, Battle Tower, and other battle places don't need EVs to be won, so really I like that they were made. If you want to play as a relaxed player, then don't use EVs, but if you are in a boring post-game and get into competitive battling, then why not take advantage of EVs?

I'm fine with it, also no reason to complain you are not forced to do it, you can finish your game with just straighforwrd battling like you say, no need for special/trained pokemon to do it.

This basicly.

IVs and EVs are pretty fundamental. They make each Pokemon an individual (this is why the old-school guidebooks say each Pokemon is different!). Imagine if you set two of the same Pokemon against each other. They'd have the same stats and so the outcome would be affected by the attacks used and to a large extent luck. Having two underlying variables that add a twist to the game makes battling more interesting. It's hard for me to explain in any other way. And to the OP, Pokemon was never just about "battling and getting EXP".

why are you saying that?

Because the OP wrote as if EVs and IVs are some new thing that were added to the games. He talks about "it was fine when it was just battling and getting Exp." even though EVs and IVs have been around since Gen I, admittedly with different mechanics and names. He wrote as if these things existing are so hindering to his enjoyment of the game that "they shouldn't have been made". And if they're such a huge deal to him, then the fact is he never can enjoy Pokemon since they've always been around.

Of course people can enjoy Pokemon any way they want. The only difference for the OP is he was naive to these things in Gen I and now is aware of them.

I went over eight years of playing Pokemon without even knowing what EVs and IVs are. You can do fine without knowing what they even are, so there's no reason to want them out of the game. However, I can understand how you can be annoyed by people's obsession on EV's and IV's in forums if you don't care about them.

Also, at the developer round table, it was announced that EV's and IV's will be made more visible to players in X and Y, so maybe you will like them in Gen 6.

I believe that they are too complicated... I myself probably wouldn't have the patience to do it lol! XD But I don't believe that they shouldn't have ever been made... if some people like them, and are willing to take the time to train their Pokémon in that way, than that is great! If not, well, then you just don't have to do it... it is as simple as that (but this is just my personal opinion of course). Who knows, maybe someday I will end up doing it with my Pokémon, but for now I am just gonna stick to training my Pokémon the way they are, without doing any crazy "in-depth" training... they aren't robots, and I treat them as living, breathing creatures... but again, this is all based on personal opinions. ;)

Eh, I never really bothered understanding all that EV stuff. I MIGHT try it out in Gen VI, but I probably still won't have a clue as to what I'm doing

EVs (and, well, maybe not IVs as much, that system could use some work) work way better than people think they do. the only problem i see with EVs and IVs is that they do exist, but they're close to invisible. i just feel that they could be displayed better. and maybe they could make IVs not so impossible to control.
