What exactly is soft-resetting?

I really want to try finding a shiny but i don't really know what soft-resetting is. What does it do to the game? Does it damage it in any way?

No, Soft resetting is like a reset button for the game and to it Press Start, select, A,B at the same time. But don't do it when the game is saving.
