What is a Generation?

For me, a generation is a time period of about 3 years. The thing is that i see my friends say that a generation is a set amount of games that came out during a specific time period.

What do you think a generation really is exactly?

In (really) broader terms, a new generation starts when there are a (relatively large) bunch of new mons, in which there are also the starter trio.

It's a fandom term, not really official even if it used largely in many media (even official ones sometimes, especially in the West). There isn't really a specific definition for that reason (It's a term really coined from the fandom). And that's all for me. Nowdays it makes little sense to me going too deep for this, or write essays like "Let's Go is generation 7.5 because there are two new pokemon semi-exclusive, Meltan and Melmeltan", or arguing/try to fit specific games into specific generation.

A new generation occurs when a new region is introduced, with a starter trio of new Pokemon. The region must be new, or it is not a new generation. Any games that come out between this time and the next time it happens are considered part of that generation. Which is why GSC vcreate their own generation, but HGSS are part of Gen IV and don't start a new one.
