What is Num Lock used for?

I just don't get it.Caps is for capital but what is num for?Number?

For kicks, what Scroll Lock does:
Back in the old computer days, when this was on, the arrow keys would scroll the page down, on a text editor, rather than move through lines. Scroll Lock isn't used anymore.

Thanks, wondering that. They're still on new keyboards anyway. But I suppose as long as they're PS2 they can be supported by older ones.

If num lock is off, then the functions in the numpad like home, page up and down, end, insert, and the directional buttons are activated. If it's off, then you can use it to type numbers.
