The ultimate answer is 42. The ultimate question is apparently 'What do you get if you multiply six by nine?' which, as you said, led to the suggestion that the universe is screwed up. But the question was apparently corrupted by the Golgafrinchans landing on Earth, so it may not be right after all.

I believe the meaning of life is different amoung all people. One person's meaning in life could be to cure cancer. Another's could be to run some expensive company. If so, the REAL question would be, "What is YOUR meaning of life."
But that's just my opinion.
