What is your least favorite Pokemon Region, based off existing Pokemon Media, gamer etc and why?

I gotta say I’m not a huge fan of Hoenn. I don’t exactly hate it but IGN was completely right. I was not a fan of the Water Routes.

The Gym Leader’s weren’t that engaging and I absolutely did not like how you needed to swim to get to the last three towns including Victory Road.

Although I will commended Hoenn for having the most different landscapes like a Volcano and Desert you can explore

I don't particularly dislike the ambiance and environment of any region, but the blandest one in terms of Pokedex itself for me has to be Galar, but if we're talking about the one I find the least appealing in terms of maps design, then it's Kalos for sure.

Its a tie between Kalos and Hoenn. Kalos was too bland and boring imo and Hoenn had too much water which got annoying fast.
I actually like Kalos but it’s definitely not high up the list tbh. The region’s Gym Leaders are easy, the evil team makes no sense and the Champion is a joke.

Agreed on the Hoenn thing

It’s close between Kalos and Galar - the former for being so linear with so little post-game, as well as being so easy - but Galar takes the cake. The story there is the worst in the series by far - even worse than the Kanto region’s barely-there story - thanks to its focus on Hop and Leon, its flimsy villain motivations, and having several moments where it literally tells you “don’t worry, player, you don’t have to be involved in this plot moment because the adults are here!” Leon to the off-screen rescue, I guess? That Leon was shoved into the anime with the same not-believable, Gary Stu’d “unbeatable” gimmick means that the negative experiences from Galar now also pervade a second medium, and in a way that has actively done a disservice to multiple other Champions. It’s also an incredibly linear region outside the Wild Area, which itself is limited in scope, and the $30 DLC. There are entire “towns” that are a single narrow corridor with a backdrop, there are dozens of buildings that are just props, and the Battle Tower is supremely unchallenging. The overall aesthetic is also nothing special, which is another reason Kalos edges it out in competition. I have felt not a sliver of joy or happiness engaging with that region - Kalos, at least, is nice to look at.

I have to mention that Kanto was also in the running for just generally being quite blind, but it has a certain nostalgic charm nonetheless. I also have to throw mildly-dishonorable mentions to Alola for being similarly linear and Unova for introducing by far the worst Pokémon designs in the franchise, from my perspective, but beyond those items I feel they’re leagues ahead of the other two here.

Alola honestly suffers from not allowing the water areas to be more traversable like Hoenn; that would allow them to significantly reduce its linearity and introduce more small islands throughout. It probably has the most potential of all the regions in the bottom half of my ranking, and it’s a shame that it was ultimately so limited.

Kalos is arguably my least favorite region in terms of regional design. I simply don't find anything appealing about it, other than Miare [Lumiose] City, which in itself is still very confusing for me to navigate through even 9 years later. Isshu [Unova] would be my second choice, although only because I found it to be very sparse in Black/White, but Black 2/White 2 fixed many of its issues.

Despite being tired of the continued references to it, I actually think Kanto is fun to explore. I loathe Hoenn's water routes but everything else is fun. Sinnoh is perfect outside of the slow pace. Unova's ok but the optional/side areas are what really saves it. Kalos is fun to explore and I think the gap between Viola and Grant is arguably the best in any Pokémon game. Alola's cutscenes don't bother me and while the linear routes get boring, it's mostly saved by how much I love every location.

So for me it's Johto or Galar. While Gen 2 Johto is my least favorite, I do at least love the emphasis on events lime Apricorns and the Bug Catching Contest since it encourages you to revisit old areas which is something most regions suffer from as they're usually one and done. Otherwise I find Johto to be a slog especially with the Rocket story. Galar is mainly saved by how good most of the areas look and the DLC areas. Galar is just way too linear and probably the only game I have no intention of replaying.

Johto, it has a great starters. It did bring in Dark and Steel types to nerf Psychic types.

But it just didn't have a lot of improvements. More like rushed a Kanto Expansion

-Miltank was created. One of few pokemon i really hate and a lot of games have always brought it back. It was even more op with Scrappy in Gen 4 remakes.
-Fire types were scarce.
-Only 1 new ghost type Misdreavus. Morty the Ghost specialist did not receive it on his original Johto team.
-Unown has never received any new moves and even after returning in Legends: Arceus it's still crap.
-Only 1 new Dragon.
-Roughly 60% of Gen 1 pokemon dominate the region.
-Gen 2 are super rare and always have a unique chance to run away like legendaries.
That unique skill was never re-introduced without moves like Teleport, Explosion, Self Destruct or Roar.

-Gen 2 Legendary dogs can accidentally disappear permanently with the roar glitch
-
Houndour is unavailable until Elite 4 are defeated.
-Bruno and Lance were re-introduced as a Gen 2 Elite 4 members.
-Too many caves and the cave to get Tyrogue is a real hassle if the box is full.
-Leafeon and Glaceon are not available without transferring.

In terms of landscape I guess Kanto by default due to being pretty bare bones compared to its successors. I still don't really hate or dislike it though. It was the first region so it served as a decent starting point

As much as I like Kanto I have to agree that it's the most bland region. None of its cities stand out as anything special and the region itself is small. One of the main things that I've always disliked about Kanto is how there's a cluster of 5 towns and cities super close to each other (Saffron, Cerulean, Vermilion, Celadon and Lavender) meanwhile places like Fuchsia and Cinnabar are so far away from them. It makes the region feel unbalanced. :[

What I find infuriating and even just plain baffling about Kanto's design is that in many of the games that feature the region, the Cycling Road completely landlocks Kuchiba [Vermilion] harbor and makes it impossible for ships to exit the bay.

Yeah I dunno what they were thinking. I mean it made sense in the older games like RBY and GSC since the games had limited tile sets, but HGSS added an actual bridge to Cycling Road which made way more sense. Dunno why the road reverted back to a land path in Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. :[

My least favorite is probably Galar, because it's even more linear than Alola and feels very dead a lot of the time.

The routes are also unnecessarily obnoxious and travelling through it is more frustrating than enjoyable. The Wild Area definitely saves it, not to mention the Ilse of Armor and the Crown Tundra.

I'd say Johto tbh. I never liked the map design of G/S/C all that much (Cianwood City was particularly ugly, imo those houses that were just slapped on the sand between stone cliffs with no greenery were just depressing) Plus it felt like the Johto Pokémon were 1)often pretty lame (like Ledyba for example) 2) overshadowed by the Kanto Pokémon (look at how many Johto gym leaders have teams that consist only of Gen 1 Pokémon) Heck, you can't even find some Gen 2 Pokémon until after the League.
It all gave this impression of Johto being nothing but an "expansion pack" for Kanto.
Then there was stupid stuff like the radio tower where Professor Oak told you where to find Clefairy in a. very. slow. text. crawl. while some radio dj provided stupid commentary. The fact that the evolution stones weren't as easily accessible as in Kanto, especially not in large quantities. The ulgy, white text on black background pokedex. And those damn, roaming legendary beasts.
IMO Johto is just very lacking.

Yet another reason to hate Johto? They introduced Miltank. A infamous early boss pokemon that is hard to beat and i just hate that they bring it back a lot. Giving it both Scrappy (allows normal moves to hit ghosts) and Lum Berry (Heals a status condition) for a 3rd Gym in a remake... and the moveset is OP

Rollout
Attract (If your team has males then this move is annoying)
Stomp (high flinch chance)
Milk Drink (free healing)

Houen for me, this could have been rectified if they added more towns like Paciflidlog town and had an equal amount of towns and cities on water and on land. it would have helped show that team aqua was not COMPLETELY crazy about expanding the ocean if they represented how many places were already adjusting. Instead we have lots of emptiness despite the large amount of water.
