Manga and Anime

Anime-
-Characters rarely get background stories
(The most we know on Ash is he comes from Pallet Town and has a mom, and Pokemon has been around since the 90s!)
-Never Use TMs(or its never implied)
-Pokemon don't get Lvs. (This is evident through Ash's Charmander had Flamethrower like the mintue he got it)

Manga
-Follows the game a little closer (which I personally like)
-Characters go by the name of what cartridge their in (Red, Blue, etc.)

The list goes on

In my personal opinion i'd much rather follow Manga than the Anime, Anime jus running low on ideas in my humble opinion

Myuu...
anime is always crap IMO. I dislike the anime for years. Thats why I always prefer the manga.

Clearly we're great!
They're also entirely different stories. I don't think it's fair to compare the two.

The Manga has more depth, it's a much darker tale than the anime. I wish I could buy the manga in England though, I don't want to order over the internet. That's a downside, and I'd be able to notice more differences.

I've never thought about this point but I think you may be right, both products seem to target different markets and aren't really easy to compare with each other.

This thread should be moved to the General Pokemon Discussion Forums.

But anyway, the Manga's much better than the anime. Goes to show that two Japanese manga artists have more imagination/creativity than an entire TV corporation.

Even though it's been made known that the two target different audiences, at least make it a more continuous storyline than it is now. Note that the episodes are more like those from Disney, a different story per episode. Anime people prefer seamless storyline that melt into each episode, even if it ends at the most exciting moment. The anime always ends with a happily-ever-after theme. Absolutely cheesy.

Couldn't of said it any better myself.

As I said earlier, I like them both... but it's understandable to have most anime episodes have self-contained storylines because, as you said, it's aimed towards a different market than the manga, a market that might not care to have a long and engrossing storyline that progresses throughout each episode. Remember, though, the anime doesn't have a continuing storyline in the background following Ash's journey.

I agree with several things, although, I think it takes creativity to think up stories for every episode, considering there's like a billion of them.

It's cheezy, but it's what made Pokemon popular with little kids, which eventually grew to older kids, who are us. Without those cheesy endings, when we were little, I doubt that we would've ever watched it at all :/

Well all I can say is: the anime is like a saturday morning cartoon. It's meant to be silly, fluffy and overall kid friendly. It's only 25min and you can't really squeeze very much in that kind of time.

However as I've come to realize, books / comics can and have the power to flesh out more story and such because they're books and don't run on strict air time schedules and stuff. So the author has the liberty to tell you as much info as possible as long as you're willing to listen / read it.

So obviously the manga has more time to tell you a developed story than a rushed 25min anime that's supposely like a Sat. morning cartoon.

I've been wanting to read the manga. From I read, I think I like the manga better, though I'll have to read it to know for sure.

In one episode of the anime, I think it was the episode when Ash was taking a quiz and had to switch pokemon, or when Prof. Oak went to Johto, that a someone said "At what level does [forgot pkmn name] learn [forgot move]?" Someone answered "Level Forty!"

Man... I'm actually really tired of this whole manga VS anime business.

It's like comparing novels to films, they just don't telly because novels have more detail and films are 2 hours. People forget you can only do so much with 2 hours.

Same goes with the anime and manga argument: the anime is only 25min. It's not long and there's only so much stuff you can put in it. Manga on the other hand is in the likeness of books and has more freedom in terms of content.

I'm not particulary fond of animé vs. manga arguments either, but I have to say, claiming that the animé doesn't have time to focus on a deep storyline is a rather lame way of trying to justify it. There are hundreds of cartoons and animé aimed at children that have tons of character development and interesting plot twists that make the shows exciting. And they all seem to manage it easily.
It shouldn't be difficult for the pokémon animé in particular, because going through one region takes the show 3 whole years to accomplish. You can't tell me that during that space of time they have available, they shouldn't be able to weave in a few well thought out sub-plots also.

But anyways. If there's anything I do dislike about the manga, its the whole 'pokémon have levels' and 'you can capture legendaries' thing. I also hate how the pokémon themselves, from what I can gather, seem to have zero personallity.

I agree that the pokemon in the manga are a bit sterile and bland at time, but at least being able to capture legendaries makes the manga more true to the way we see the Pokemon World in the games... but, at the same time, it does sort of take the "magic" away from the legendaries.

The story in the manga is, in my opinion, much better than the anime series. The anime never interested it me. It was always the same, very cheesy and a bit too childish for me.
The manga however, have very interesting story, which makes you want to read on and uncover the plot. The characters get a lot more depth, which automatically gives the story more depth as well.

Thats exactly why I dislike the idea. I'm not actually a fan of most legendary pokémon, but the idea of these mythical creatures that are able to bring destruction upon the entire planet being controled by a bunch of kids and being used as regular pokémon is just disturbing, to say the least.
Thats one of the things the animé has over the manga. It doesn't have to heavily rely on the game format.

"The" manga? There's like over a dozen different Pocket Monsters manga out there. You guys need to be more specific.

I think this thread refers to Pokemon Adventures... clearer?
